History

During World War II, a fake celebrity meet-and-greet ran out of Coney Island using imposters of Captain America and Bucky; this ended twice in disaster for them: First when the real heroes in their civilian identities of Private Steve Rogers and camp mascot Bucky Barnes roughed them up, and were later kidnapped and murdered by agents of the vengeance-seeking Red Skull.[1]

Not too long after, the original Human Torch and Toro were invited to participate in a Mardis Gras parade in the Coney Island amusement park. The parade was soon interrupted by one of the present clowns who threw a bomb at a passing car. Although he was wstopped by the heroic duo, he killed himself before explaining his actions. When they come back to investigate, another man attempts to kill them before killing himself. Following a third man, Human Torch and Toro find a secret passage inside a hall of mirrors, where the weapons smuggler Izan hid. Using a type of gas, he subdued the two heroes and took them out to the open sea to drown them inside glass coffins of his own making.[2]

Many years later, when Dr. Octopus kidnapped Betty Brant he brought her to the Coney Island amusement park to challenge Spider-Man, Spidey arrived to battle him, although all his powers completely faded because of a cold. Naturally, the powerless Spider-Man proved to be no match for Dr. Octopus, who then publicly unmasked Spider-Man in front of Betty Brant, J. Jonah Jameson and the police.[3] Spider-Man returned to Coney Island alongside Daredevil when the Unholy Three kidnapped a young woman. Fighting the crooks across the amusement park grounds, they are eventually defeated and the young woman is rescued.[4] Some time later, Spider-Man would fight the Inhumans over an antidote on Coney Island, though they managed to come to an understanding.[5]

Secretly alterted by the Black Widow, Goliath came here to save her from her kidnappers Egghead, the Puppet Master and the Mad Thinker, who were plotting to hold the world hostage with a powerful space station of their own design. They sent out a giant robot holding Black Widow as captive to keep Goliath busy while they made their escape. Goliath destroyed the robot and saved Natasha, and the two left Coney Island to inform the Avengers of the villains' plan.[7]

Eventually, a fight between the Fantastic Four and Galactus moved to the amusement park, where Galactus destroyed a rollercoaster just by running through it. The Thing then used a ferris wheel to attack the giant, though it had little effect. Eventually the fight moved back to the inner city, where Mister Fantastic threatened to destroy Galactus' ship.[8]

When reading about an old friend from his days in the circus who had been gunned down by a mysterious sniper, Nightcrawler decided to go to Coney Island to investigate. As fate would have it, Peter Parker would also be spending the day at Coney Island on a date with Mary Jane, when the sniper struck again. This prompts Peter to excuse himself from his date and change into Spider-Man before trying to catch the sniper. He ended up running into Nightcrawler, whom he assumed to be the killer, when he catches the mutant with the sniper's weapon. Their fight took them to the amusement park, but Nightcrawler got away and Spider-Man flew when the police arrived.[9]

One winter, Daredevil followed a set-up by Bullseye to Coney Island, where the assassin pretended to have Black Widow strapped to the tracks of the Cyclone rollercoaster. Daredevil apparantly was aware that it was only a dummy and didn't fall for the trap. Meanwhile, hidden in an arcade, Black Widow managed to free herself from Bullseye's bondage and began fighting her kidnapper when Daredevil showed up to assist her. Together they managed to defeat him and his henchmen.[11]

Later, Captain America returned to Coney Island to fight and defeat the Coney Island Cruisers and the gang leader Big Thunder.[12] At a later point the cruisers would try to jump Madcap, who happened to be strolling around the amusement park, though he easily defeated them. When Madcap caused more chaos on Coney Island, Nomad fought him, eventually beating him on top of the Cyclone rollercoaster.[13]

Some time later, Leda Fontaine was kidnapped and held at gunpoint in an abbandonend funhouse on Coney Island by Montenegro and his men. When Power Man and Iron Fist intervened and fought his henchmen, Montenegro took Leda to the top of a rollercoaster and threatened to drop her. Iron Fist got ahead of him and shook the rollercoaster with his powered fist, causing both Montenegro and Leda to fall. While Power Man managed to catch Leda, Montenegro got away.[14]

Later on, Spider-Man and Silver Sable fought the Sinister Syndicate, which led to the destruction of the Cyclone rollercoaster. With the help of Sandman Spider-man and SIlver Sable managed to defeat the team of villains.[15]
