Conan the Barbarian #15The Green Empress of Melniboné

Conan and his companions Zephra and Elric approach the Sighing Lake where the other-dimensional city of Yagala stands. They are attacked by demons, but easily defeat them and make their way to the shores. They are forced to craft a boat from the ribcage of a giant skeletal creature while Sephra's father, Zukala, watches them through a magical portal. The three reach Kulan-Gath, who is attempting to summon the dread Terhali of Melnibone in order to gain supreme power. He believes the others were sent by Thoth-Amon, but before anything can be done, Prince Gaynor and his armies appear and all hell breaks loose. Kulan-Gath manages to complete his spell and Terhali rises from the dead. Elric defeats, but is unable to kill, Gaynor, and Kulan-Goth annoys Terhali to the point where she kills him. Elric and Conan attack the witch-queen but she knocks them both unconscious. Zephra becomes possessed by Arkyn, a Lord of Law and enemy of Terhali. The now powerful Zephra destroys Terhali, but dies in the process. Elric returns to his dimension as the city of Yagala crumbles and is swallowed by the Sighing Lake. Conan gives Zukala his daughter's body and rides away.

Savage Tales #1
(originally printed as The Frost Giant's Daughter)

Conan, now a member of an Aesir war party, is just finishing off a band of Vanir in the snowy plains, but soon stumbles and falls due to his injuries. A beautiful, scantily clad maiden appears to him, and when she tempts him a little too much, he chases her lustily towards the mountains, knowing she might be luring him to an ambush. When her frost giant brothers appear, he swiftly deals with them and continues his chase, finally catching her. She prays to her father, the god Ymir, to save her, and she vanishes in a flash of blue light. Conan collapses, and is rescued by his Aesir companions, who, while they don't entirely believe his story, are disquieted with the remnants of a dress Conan holds in his hand.

Synopsis for "Hawks from the Sea"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Conan the Barbarian #19Hawks from the Sea

It doesn't take long for Conan to rub the crew of Prince Yezdigerd's ship the wrong way, and he soon gets involved in a brawl with a short-tempered soldier named Balthaz. Prince Yezdigerd, impressed by Conan, tells the barbarian his plan to invade thy hyrkanian city of Makkalet, because they abducted the "living good Tarim" from the temple of the turanian capital Aghrapur. Yezdigerd's ship meets with the Turanian fleet and joins with the assault on the city. The high priest of Makkalet, Kharam-Akkad, has some secret plans to save the city, and to that end is subtly taking control of the city from its weak king. As Balthaz leads Yezdigerd's troops into the city, Kharam unleashes his secret weapon, nine giant undead warriors! They slaughter the Turanian troops but Balthaz and Fafnir escape by climbing the walls toward the priest. Fafnir is felled by an arrow and Conan risks his life to reach his companion, but, other than pulling the arrow free, realizes he can do nothing. He does, however, notice that one of the giants seems to be a focal point for the other eight, so he climbs back down into the fray. He doesn't see Fafnir groggily roll over and fall from the wall into the ocean. Conan confronts the central zombie, caving its head in with his mace, and is satisfied to see all of the other giants crumble as well. The monsters dissolve, as does the magical amulet that Kharam was using to control the undead, and the Turanian forces take the eastern wall.

An ugly man who lives alone is regarded with suspicion by the villagers and after a visit into town to pick up a music box, a mob gathers and follows him back to his home. They see a beautiful girl sitting still through a window and figure the monster must have her under some sinister spell. They break in and gun him down, only then noticing the girl is merely a mannequin. The man was merely a tragic hermit who had created his own world while the villagers in truth were the monsters. (In Jack's original end of this story, the witches were revealed to be Stan and Jack.)
