Rachel Summers found herself in a dark future. Determined to keep the ideals of the X-Men alive, she formed the Clan Askani, which openly opposed Apocalypse's rule.
As she advanced in age, she sought to take care of the Askani'son...the boy who would be Cable. One member volunteered to go to the past to bring Nathan, knowing that the trip back would be fatal to her. She was given the name of Askani to exemplify the harsh sacrifices made.
An Askani cult was later encountered in the present day, but seemed to have twisted the ideals. Cable and Blaquesmith stopped them, although both were intrigued to learn of an ancestor, the Dark Mother, who is attributed to passing down the powerful psionic powers to Jean Grey.
