Quote1 Remember, with great power, comes great responsibility. Quote2
Uncle Ben to Peter Parker[src]

History

When Peter's parents died he was taken in by the amiable Ben Parker. He raised him as his own son trying hard to enlist values in the youth. When Peter was a teenager Ben was fired from his job as chief electrician for 35 years and worried about his nephew Peter Parker's strange behavior. His words of wisdom, "With great power comes great responsibility", inspired Peter to become Spider-Man. But Peter lashed out at him during this speech, telling him to stop acting like his father. After Ben was shot by a robber his nephew Peter failed to stop, Peter and his aunt greatly mourned his passing.[1]

Captain George Stacy later informed Peter and Aunt May of new evidence that suggested the thug Peter failed to stop was only an accomplice of Flint Marko (Sandman), who was Uncle Ben's real killer. Marko had really wanted Ben to run, but his partner's interference caused Marko to pull the trigger by accident when Ben was trying to reason with the man and show him the error in his ways. Seeing the truth, Spider-Man forgave Marko just before he slipped away.[2]

Ben's passing was later told by Peter to his counterpart following his transportation to Earth-199999 and the death of that Earth's May Parker. Peter told his counterpart that he had hunted down the thug he thought was responsible, but although he got what he wanted, it didn't help. He also acknowledged that he had been told the same thing by Uncle Ben that Earth-199999's May had told Peter - that "with great power, comes great responsibility".[3] Peter would again come face-to-face with Flint Marko during their final showdown at the Statue of Liberty, but this time held no animosity towards him over what had happened to Ben.

Notes

  • The late Cliff Robertson portrays Uncle Ben in Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. Although his character is killed in the first movie, he appears in a daydream in the second one, and in flashbacks in the third one. Ben's appearance in 2007's Spider-Man 3 was also Robertson's final role before he died 4 years later in 2011.
  • The second film features a sequence where Peter contemplates giving up his Spider-Man identity to Uncle Ben who, in the daydream, is a physical representation of the entity and ideology of Spider-Man, encouraging Peter to continue on as a super hero.

Trivia

  • The Honey Beige 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 that Uncle Ben drives is one that is incorporated by Sam Raimi into many of his films as an Easter egg.
  • An archive recording of Robertson from Spider-Man reciting his responsibility motto is used in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as a voice-over for a flashback that features that film's Uncle Ben.
