The Avengers Compound is a 15-acre estate located on the Pacific coastline south of Los Angeles at 1800 Palos Verdes Drive. It was formerly the headquarters of the West Coast Avengers.
Built in 1921 as a home for the silent movie star Sylvia Powell, after the actress's death in 1969, the estate was owned by another actress, Moira Brandon, until the Avengers purchased it as a base for their second team. Based on designs created by Tony Stark for Avengers Mansion and for his former facilities at Stark International, the Compound's planning and construction was supervised by Dr. William Barrett Foster, an engineer formerly of Stark International's Los Angeles plant and super-powered adventurer. A special freelance construction crew handpicked by Foster was contracted to do the building renovations. The mountainside beneath the main building was excavated to facilitate the installation of two levels about fifty feet beneath the mansion's basement. It was on these levels where the high-security functions of the West Coast Avengers were conducted. A garage and hangar facility for the team's supersonic quinjets was built on the site of a private four-hole golf course. The actual hangar facilities were underground, and were accessible through a camouflaged area of cliff side. The staff bungalows of the original estate were remodeled to become quarters for all members in residence. The estate includes about 250 feet of private beachfront. The Avengers Compound had a permanent staff of five, including a butler, maid, cook, groundskeeper, and mechanic. The financing and maintenance of the Compound was made possible though the Maria Stark Trust Fund and several private grants. The manager and resident scientist of the Compound was Dr. Henry Pym.
The Compound was heavily damaged by various attacks, which was one of the reasons that the Vision, East Coast chairman at the time, gave for bringing up the vote to disband the western team. The team dissolved before renovations could be completed.
Recently the Compound has been brought back into use by the Avengers Academy.
Points of Interest
The main floor of the neo-Mediterranean styled villa retained most of its original functions and furnishings. Although there were numerous surveillance and detainment devices to intercept unauthorized personnel, this floor was relatively low security. Public functions of the West Coast Avengers, such as press conferences, were held in the east wing main ballroom, as was formal dining. Informal meetings were held in the west wing living room area. The library, which encompassed part of the second floor, had the capacity for 20,000 books. The main floor section of the two-story library contained reference books. The kitchen and maid's and cook's quarters were also on this floor. On the same level as the main floor were the patio, sundeck, and an outdoors Olympic-size swimming pool.
The second floor of the main building contained the office/study where administrative affairs of the Avengers were conducted and non-classified organizational material is stored. The West Coast Avengers' chairman, Hawkeye, primarily used this room. Also on this floor was the master bedroom shared by Hawkeye and his wife Mockingbird. In the West wing was the indoor recreation room and lounge where a billiards table, pinball machines, video arcades, and a wall-sized television screen were kept for the use of members and their guests. The second floor of the library contains fiction and recreational material. Second floor interior balconies overlook the front hall and both wings.
The basement of the main building contained the conventional support facilities for the above-ground levels, including the heating system, the power generator, and the house computer. It was a low security area.
Sub-Basement Level One
The two sub-levels of the Avengers Compound comprised the high-security area of the headquarters. On Sub-Level One was the private infirmary and biological and chemical research facilities. The Avengers did not employ a resident physician. Staff scientist and Compound manager Dr. Henry Pym made extensive use of the laboratory facilities.
Sub-Basement Level Two
Level Two houses the high-security Assembly Room where all operational and strategic meetings were held. The main computer was located here, containing the same crime forensic files, operational records, and world security data as its twin in the East Coast Avengers Mansion. The computers were constantly in communication with one another, sharing all data. Like their East Coast counterparts, the West Coast Avengers had limited direct access to the national security data of the Pentagon and a common database with SHIELD, as well as routine information trades with Fantastic Four, Inc. and with Alpha Flight/Department H. The power generators for the two Sub-Basement levers were located here.
The Hangar/Garage facility was separated from the Main Building of the Compound by about one hundred feet. Above ground is an eight-car garage and a hangar facility for visiting helicopters and other VTOL or hovercraft type vehicles. Hawkeye's Sky-Cycle and two extras were stored here. There was no runway for the landing of conventional fixed-wing aircraft. Beneath the garage was the automobile service area. Beneath the upper hangar was the main quinjet launch, landing, storage, and maintenance facility. There was room for four quinjets; three in the maintenance bays, and one on the catapult launcher. The entrance to the underground hangar was disguised as part of the natural cliffside and can be opened remotely by any quinjet. The Hangar/Garage facility and all West Coast Avengers vehicles are serviced by resident mechanic Jorge Latham, a friend of Hawkeye's, formerly of Cross Technological Enterprises.
Marvel Avengers Academy (Earth-TRN562)
On Earth-TRN562, Avengers Compound was located in New York City. Black Widow hypothesized that the compound was the location of the S.H.I.E.L.D. base known as the Triskelion. In any case, Nick Fury would open Avengers Academy on the compound.
Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999)
The compound was originally a warehouse located in Upstate New York belonging to Howard Stark in the 1940's. After the defeat of Ultron in Sokovia, Tony Stark, converted the warehouse into a new facility for the Avengers.
