Synopsis for "Legacy"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Spider-Man #73

Peter Parker is running across the rooftops of Manhattan, thinking about how much everything has changed in his life recently. From a near-death experience, the return of his spider-powers, the tragic loss of New York's major heroes during the battle against Onslaught, and his getting laid off from a staff job at the Daily Bugle, things have been hectic.[Continuity 1] He has considered coming up with a new costumed identity and helping Ben Reilly with crime fighting and working to support his wife Mary Jane and their unborn child, Peter has gone back to freelancing for the Bugle.[Continuity 2] As he arrives at his destination, Peter focuses on the task at hand. Sneaking into a building, Peter begins spying on a meeting of various underworld crime bosses. The meeting has been organized by General Nguyen Ngoc Coy, a crimelord from Madripoor. He has summoned Hammerhead, Tombstone, Gavin Thorpe, Silvermane, Caeser Cicero, Rose, and the Slug to discuss their mutual foe, Don Fortunato who has returned to New York to take over the underworld.

Later, Ben Reilly is frustrated by the amount of time his impromptu roommate, Jimmy-6, is taking in the bathroom. This causes Reilly to regret saving Jimmy's life from assassins because Jimmy took him seriously when he offered the mobster a place to stay.[Continuity 3] That's when Peter comes knocking, prompting Jimmy to hide in a closet, fearing that it might be someone coming to take out a hit on him. As Peter begins telling Ben about the recent mob meeting, Ben tries to keep him quiet before Parker blows his double identity. However, hearing about the mob meeting is of interest to Jimmy-6 who comes out of hiding and, pointing his gun at Peter, demands that Parker tell him everything. At that same moment, Don Fortunato waits for his limo to arrive. He boards it with his pet wolf, Angel, where he is told that everything is going according to plan. Fortunato is pleased and tells his minions that he has some business to attend to before they initiate the next phase of his plan. Back at Reilly's apartment, Ben can't understand why Jimmy suddenly wants to protect Don Fortunato, especially since the mobster has put a price on Jimmy's head. Jimmy tells Ben to mind his own business and storms out of the apartment, unaware that Reilly tagged him with a spider-tracer on his way out. He then quickly changes into Spider-Man and when Peter offers to help, Ben tells his "brother" to go back to his family.

Later that evening at Don Fortunato's mansion, the elderly mobster sits before his fireplace in contemplative silence. That's when Jimmy enters the room, having slipped past the security system he helped design. When the Don asks if Jimmy has come to kill him, Jimmy explains that he learned that others are gunning for Fortunato. Jimmy has decided to come and help defend the Fortunato family from the impending attack, even though the Don insists that the safety of the family is no longer Jimmy's concern. Outside, Spider-Man sneaks inside and silently takes out the guards. This has an unfortunate side effect as the rival mobs send their armies on to the ground. Inside, Don Fortunato tells Jimmy that the family has bee sent someplace safe. That's when they are interrupted by Spider-Man and moments later by the army of rival mobsters, led by Tombstone. As Jimmy shields the Don from enemy gunfire, Spider-Man leaps into battle, to take down the mobsters, that continue to file into the building with an endless number. That's when Tombstone focuses his attention to the wall-crawler looking for a rematch against Spider-Man.[Continuity 4]

As Spider-Man battles Tombstone, Jimmy tries to join the battle but Don Fortunato pulls him aside, explaining that he has everything under control. Throwing a switch, an electrical charge incapacitates all the invaders in the room. The Don explains that things are about to change and that he has gained powerful allies and resources to secure his position as the ruler of the New York underworld. A secret passageway opens up revealing that the Don has allied himself with Hydra. He then tells Jimmy to call a meeting with the rival crime bosses, intending to secure his position by killing Spider-Man right before their eyes.

Synopsis for "Last of the Heroes"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Spider-Man #74

As the city struggles with the loss of its greatest heroes, Daredevil has been doing his part to deal with the sudden uptick in crime.[Continuity 5] When a high-tech bank robber named Bolt tries to rob a bank, Daredevil is there to stop him. The man without fear easily takes down the novice criminal and begins questioning Bolt on where he got his suit of armor. Bolt doesn't want to talk out of fear of his safety and that of the family. Instead, he provides Daredevil with information on the meeting that Don Fortunato has called on Staten Island. It is with all the other rival crime bosses and it is a meeting that Fortunato promises will end with the death of Spider-Man. After hearing this, Daredevil tells Bolt to contact Matt Murdock to represent him in court and swings off to save Spider-Man.[Continuity 6]

At a private estate on Staten Island, Don Fortunato addresses a large gathering of criminals. Behind him are his rivals, Caeser Cicero, Silvermane, the Slug, Hammerhead, Nguyen Ngoc Coy, and Gaven Thorpe. He has gathered them to join his new criminal empire which is now backed by the terrorist organization known as Hydra. To cement his position as undisputed ruler of the underworld, Don Fortunato unveils Spider-Man who has been restrained. By the end of the evening, the Don intends to unmask the wall-crawler and then kill him before all who have gathered. The wall-crawler can't believe how he got into this situation, as he only came to Don Fortunato's property thinking that Jimmy-6 was going to kill the elderly mobster. In reality, Jimmy came to protect the Don, because he is Fortuanto's son, this ultimately leading to the wall-crawler's capture. This makes Spider-Man regret saving Jimmy's life and allowing him to stay in Ben Reilly's apartment.[Continuity 7] By this point, Daredevil has arrived and is staking out the scene. That's when Don begins the next part of his meeting, bringing out Tombstone who foolishly thought he could attack the Don at his home. He has also brought a number of innocent people that were taken from the territories owned by the various mobsters. They are to be executed as a show of force The Don then explains if anyone betrays him in the future he will then cut a swath of death and destruction across the affected territories until the dissenting mobster in question is driven out of the city by the very people they control. With the rival mobsters standing in silent agreement, Fortunato orders Jimmy-6 to proceed with the execution.

Unfortunately, Jimmy refuses to kill innocent people and protests this. However, his protests fall on deaf ears, and the Don orders him to comply. Jimmy then pulls a gun on the Don, prompting all the other gangsters to call for Jimmy-6's death. Don Fortunato then tells Jimmy that he will no longer be considered part of the Fortunato family. As the two men argue with each other, Spider-Man uses the distraction to attempt to break free from his bonds. Using all of his strength, Spider-Man manages to break free and quickly uses his stingers to knock out the rival mob bosses. No sooner is he free do the other gangsters begin opening fire, but he easily dodges the hail of bullets thanks to his spider-sense. That's when Daredevil makes his presence known and helps Spider-Man free the innocent hostages. The two heroes cover the fleeing people from mobsters and Hydra agents alike. When they get off the property, they are suddenly rescued by Jimmy-6 who has managed to steal a Hydra helicopter. Once they are all loaded onboard the chopper, Jimmy unleashes its payload of weapons on his father's estate. As they take off, Spider-Man spots Tombstone -- still in shackles -- trying to make his escape. There is an army of Hydra soldiers behind him trying to eliminate him. Unwilling to let anyone die, Spider-Man swings down and tries to rescue Tombstone. When a bullet severs his web-line, the wall-crawler is saved by Daredevil. As they get away, Daredevil makes a jokingly says he is glad he saved Spider-Man as he didn't want to be the only hero in town. Still, despite the overwhelming odds they now face, Spider-Man feels confident that things can only get better from here.

Synopsis for "Spider-Man No More!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Amazing Spider-Man #50

As usual, Spider-Man breaks up an attempted robbery of a payroll truck. However, one of the bystanders is frightened by the violence and asks Spider-Man to leave. Peter is astonished at how well Mr. Jameson's attacks on him have worked.

Peter Parker (Earth-616) from Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 50 0001

Spider-Man No More!

Shortly afterward, Peter arrives to his and Harry's apartment only to be told by Harry that his Aunt May is ill. Rushing to Aunt May's house, he is told by Anna Watson that May was calling for Peter, but she has been sedated now and is sleeping peacefully. Peter chastises himself for not paying enough attention to his Aunt since moving in with Harry. Even though he has an important test the next day, Peter doesn't study, figuring he wouldn't be able to concentrate.

The next day, after the test, Peter's Professor expresses concern over the decline in Peter's grades. With all of this weighing on him, Peter begins to hate the very name of Spider-Man! Adding fuel to the fire is J. Jonah Jameson going into another anti-Spider-Man rant on TV. Walking at night, dwelling on all his problems, Peter takes his Spider-Man outfit and throws it in the garbage, deciding to end his crime-fighting career.

The next morning, an excited child brings the outfit to Jameson's office, much to Jameson's delight. Public reaction to the story is mixed... although Jameson is delighted that he sold every copy of the paper with the story in it. Meanwhile, at the office of a mysterious figure known only as "Kingpin", the self-proclaimed Lord of the Underworld tells his men to prepare. Now that Spider-Man is out of the way, there will be no one to oppose him. In the upcoming days, the organized crime in New York City starts an uprise and through his contacts, Frederick Foswell learns about the Kingpin's plans.

In the midst of this situation, Peter arrives at the Daily Bugle]] and tells Jameson he is quitting, so he can devote more time to his College studies. In the following days, the crime rate increases dramatically, but Peter couldn't care less. Ironically, that same day, Harry shares his concerns about the crime in the city, while Aunt May has recovered and is busy along with Anna. Furthermore, Peter is unable to spend some time with either Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy, making his whole decision of being free to share his time with friends a bit pointless.

Finally, driving his motorcycle home, Peter hears a cry for help and seeing no one else around, decides to help out. The night watchman Peter saves reminds him of his Uncle Ben, and Peter remembers how he became Spider-Man, and how his Uncle Ben died because Peter failed to stop a criminal. Peter realizes he must once again become Spider-Man to prevent other tragedies due to his inaction.

Meanwhile, Foswell approaches the Kingpin and tells him he's taking over... and offers the Kingpin the job of Lieutenant in his army, but Kingpin has Foswell tied up. At that same moment, Peter breaks into Jameson's office, puts on his Spider-Man outfit, and waits for Jameson to come in so he can deliver the good news about Spider-Man being back to Jameson in person.
