Antillia was a chain of seven large islands in the Western Ocean. There fled thousands of Atlantean survivors from the Great Cataclysm.[1] It was located southwest of sunken Atlantis and east of the land of Mayapan,[3] midway between Mayapan and Hyboria.[7]
Ptahuacan was the capital[4] and only city on the archipelago,[3] though the legends told of the Seven Cities of the Antilles.[1]
It was believed by the Antillians that they were the last surviving city of the Atlanteans on Earth,[1] though other cities of the remnants of Atlantis existed.
History
Pre-Cataclysmic Age[]
During the Pre-Cataclysmic Age, Antillia was inhabited by brown-skinned natives.[7]
Great Cataclysm[]
After the Great Cataclysm, survivors of Atlantis scattered on surviving islands, including Antillia, and Ptahuacan,[5] which became the only city on the archipelago of Antillia,[3] and its capital.[4] In Antillia, the Atlantean refugees were priests of Xotli and their slaves who fled there using a fleet of Vril-powered ships.[7]
Hyborian Age[]
In Hyboria, there was telling of the "Seven Cities of the Antilles", made of brick of gold and streets paved with silver, though similar were told about Vendhya and Khitai, tales that proved wrong. Meanwhile, the Antillians themselves believed Ptahuacan to be the last surviving city of the Atlanteans on Earth,[1] or even the last land above water, as part of the lies told by the priests of Xotli to maintain their rule.[7]
During his travel westwards after abdicating the throne of Aquilonia, Conan and his crew faced on isles of Antillia kraken-faced warlocks who sacrificed humans to the drowned gods of Atlantis.[8]
This encounter could be a subsequent adventure to the events on Antillia proper against the priests of Xotli, or a retelling of it.
King Conan II sent a crew after his father. They went to Antillia where "those he had left able to speak" told them he had kept on westwards.[9]
Post-Hyborian Cataclysm[]
The Post-Hyborian Cataclysm happened circa 8,000 BC virtually erased evidence of the existence of society developed on Antillia and Ptahuacan (as well as on Avalon, Mayapan, Opar, Ruta, and Zothique).[5]
Antillian Culture[]
Religion[]
The people of Ptahuacan worshiped Xotli, the Demon from Beyond and conducted human sacrifices on his behalf.[10]
The Antillians on the island of Metemhoc (or rather Ptahuacan, see notes) worshiped the Ahau circa 10,000 BC, and perhaps earlier.[11] The thief-king Metemphoc once called Conan Kukulcan.[10]
There was also kraken-faced warlocks who sacrificed humans to the drowned gods of Atlantis.[8] Those were possibly an alternate retelling of the priests of Xotli.
Legends[]
One legend of Antillia told of the "River of Night", an ocean stream which surged forever towards the sunset.[2]Points of Interest
- Ptahuacan - only city on the archipelago, and its capital
Notes
- Antillia was created by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter in Conan of the Isles.
- The Antillian island of "Metemhoc" appear to be an error from the writers: Aside from the Ahau's profile in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #14 (June, 2010), no island on Antillia has been referred to as "Metemhoc" in comics and other handbooks' profiles. Meanwhile, the character Metemphoc is mentioned in Marvel Graphic Novel: Conan of the Isles (1988) to have called Conan "Kukulcan" (one of the Ahau/Maya gods). In Kukulcan's profile at the Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe, the latter fact is recounted in the comments spelled, with Metemphoc spelled "Metemhoc", and could be the origin of the error.
