Angel Salvadore (Earth-616) from New X-Men Vol 1 118 002

Being kicked out of home

At the tender age of fourteen, Angel Salvadore's mutant abilities first came to light. A lingering stench emanating from her bedroom in a low-class trailer home in Wyoming marked the onset of her transformation. Her unfortunate reality was compounded by an abusive stepfather who drove her out of her home. Enduring a frigid night outdoors, Angel's body underwent a remarkable change as she enveloped herself in a cocoon, ultimately emerging with a pair of wings. As dawn broke, Angel's altered existence collided with the sinister intentions of the U-Men, a group of humans driven by the twisted desire to harvest mutant organs for their own augmentation. Battling to escape, she harnessed her newfound powers, but her efforts were in vain as she was apprehended.[11] Fortunately, a timely intervention by Wolverine shattered her captivity, leading her to get sanctuary at the Xavier Institute. Reluctantly, Angel embarked on a new chapter as a student within the institute's walls.[15]

Meeting Beak

Initially, Angel struggled to adjust to the school, finding her peers to be self-important.[16] Her perspective shifted when the X-Men confronted the threat posed by Cassandra Nova. Angel collaborated with Emma Frost and the Stepford Cuckoos in fetching DNA samples of Nova, which were used to reprogram the alien Stuff. During this endeavor, Angel saved Beak, a teenage boy who had been in a coma since Nova's prior assault.[17] With Angel's instrumental contribution, Frost's intricate plan proved triumphant, as Cassandra Nova became trapped within Stuff.[18] Despite her reputation as a challenging student, Angel gradually forged connections with her mentors and peers. During a flight class, she daringly accepted a bet to share a kiss with Beak, much to his delight.[19] Their shared experience in being appointed to Xorn's Special Class strengthened a closeness that blossomed into a sexual connection.[9] During a camping trip into the Xavier Mansion's woodlands, Angel, Beak, and their Special Class classmates faced the ominous U-Men. Angel solely witnessed to the ruthless slaying of the U-Men at the hands of their professor, Xorn. In a moment of shared secrecy, Xorn recommended Angel to safeguard his brutal act, enlisting her complicity.[20]

Angel's babies hatching

After the demise of Sophie during a tumultuous riot at the institute, Emma Frost faced rejection from her other Stepford Cuckoos and extended a guiding hand to Angel instead, during shopping preparations for the Xavier Institute's prizegiving day. When the ceremony day arrived, Angel and Beak were hailed by Professor Xavier for their heroic bravery, but were not found to receive their prize. Hidden from view, they discussed their potential expulsion from the school for Angel confided in Beak the news of her pregnancy.[21] A few days later, Angel placed pods on the ceiling of the school's shed to gestate her offspring. The brood's clandestine existence was exposed when Emma Frost was murdered, and Sage and Bishop investigated the crime scene. A cloud of suspicion descended upon Angel.[22] The eggs hatched with Angel's and Beak's infants, and the young parents were absolved of any wrongdoing.[23]

In the wake of these events, Xorn declared himself to be the infamous mutant extremist, Magneto, who had been machinating many of the recent incidents within the Xavier Institute's walls. Under Xorn's twisted influence, Angel and the rest Special Class were coerced into becoming members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Xavier fell victim to their actions and was captured. Xorn's deranged orders set the stage for unleashing chaos upon New York City as retribution for the Genosha massacre.[24] The rebellious Angel and the spirited Beak sparked rebellion within the Special Class against Xorn's radical ideology. They assisted the resurging X-Men, guiding them in a counteroffensive against Xorn's stronghold. In the end, the X-Men prevailed.[25] After the X-Men recovered from the attack and rebuilt the school, Angel, Beak, and their children were allowed to live in the shed nestled in the woods.[26]

A domestic life

Beak's and Angel's domestic existence took a turn when the former, in a twist of cosmic fate, became enmeshed in the affairs of the Exiles, a multiversal team who was on a mission to neutralize the macabre King Hyperion. Detached from the confines of time and space, Beak became unable to interact with his family in his original universe — a consequence of his interdimensional odyssey. Angel was left alone to carry the weight of parenthood, believing Beak had chosen to abandon his family since he had not been given the opportunity to explain his condition.[27] Following the defeat of King Hyperion,[28] the Exiles gained access to the Crystal Palace, a conduit between realities that provided Beak with a means to reunite himself with Angel.[29]

Yet, destiny proved to be a capricious force. During Beak's comeback trip, his home reality was thrust into a reality-altering maelstrom caused by the Scarlet Witch, which reshaped the fabric of existence itself.[30] Beak arrived in a world where mutants ruled as the dominant species. In the rewritten reality, Angel was a prominent mutant supermodel. Robbed of her previous existence, she failed to recognize her partner. Tragedy struck once again as the malevolent Proteus set his sights on Angel, leading to a fatal encounter that left her lifeless form possessed by his sinister essence.[31] Angel's moribund body was eventually abandoned by Proteus, who migrated to the Exile Mimic. On the brink of death, Angel's life was saved by a restorative serum administered by Blink. The Exiles jumped across realities again to hunt Proteus, while Beak and Angel stayed only to witness the end of the fabricated reality.[32] As consequence of the restoration, most mutants were stripped of their abilities, including Angel, Beak, and most of their children, except for Tito. No longer marred by their former grotesque existences, Angel's and Beak's family started the next next chapter of their lives.[33]

Defiant Warrior[]

As the radical activist Tempest

Ordinary life caused the relationship between Angel and Beak to evolve into a more complacent one. They departed from the Xavier Institute and moved to an apartment in New York City. The respite from the tumultuous world of superheroics was short-lived though, as the radical Night Thrasher contacted depowered mutants to rally under the banner of the New Warriors to defy the oppressive Superhuman Registration Act and resist Tony Stark's Initiative.[4] Angel hesitated at the prospect of reentering a life of adventures, but was persuaded by Beak, now rebranded as Blackwing. Taking on the name of Tempest, Angel was outfitted with ingenious technological gadgets that endowed her with temperature-control abilities and anti-gravity flight.[34] After rigorous training and a series of obscure undertakings, Angel and the New Warriors stepped onto the public stage by thwarting the Zodiac. Their mission culminated in the tragic death of their teammate Tattoo,[35] which caused Night Thrasher contemplate disbanding the group.[36] The other New Warriors convinced him otherwise and maintained their operations.[37]

Captured by the Machinesmith

With renewed dedication, the Warriors enhanced their gadgets and properly acclimated themselves to their advanced technology. This preparation earned them triumph over the Alphaclan. However, amidst these victories, Night Thrasher's shadowy leadership festered mistrust among the team members.[38] In an attempt to mend the tattered situation, Night Thrasher unveiled a predictive system dubbed the "TransMap," a tool that monitored superhuman activity across the globe. This garnered admiration from many of the Warriors, including Angel and Blackwing. On the other hand, field leader Jubilee still harbored reservations about the system's implications.[39] In a mission to foil the Machinesmith's ambitions regarding a techno-virus spiraled into calamity. Separated from Blackwing, Angel turned out to be captured alongside fellow Warriors by the insidious villain.[40] Amidst the struggles for survival, the New Warriors eventually reassembled and succeeded in dismantling the Machinesmith's headquarters.[41]

The onset of the Skrull Invasion thrust the Warriors into a confrontation with extraterrestrial adversaries, with subsequent disagreements arising when the original New Warriors entered the fray.[42] As tensions escalated, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Cape-Killers took aim at the group, leading to the tragic demise of two members. Faced with the dire prospect of further casualties, the New Warriors embarked on a desperate attempt to alter fate by traveling through time.[43] Regrettably, this effort met failure, and Night Thrasher confronted the consequences of his manipulations. United in their decision, he and Jubilee advocated for the ultimate dissolution of the New Warriors, which allowed its members to chart their own destinies.[44]

Teen Brigade[]

Angel and Beak working for the Teen Brigade

In spite of being powerless, Angel and remained committed to superhero duty. They joined a new incarnation of the Teen Brigade and provided support to young and independent heroes. Alongside Beak, Angel assisted Ms. America liberate the enigmatic In-Betweener from a confinement center.[6] The mission bore fruit in the form of a dire warning from the In-Betweener, who unveiled that the delicate balance between Order and Chaos should be preserved.[45] The mission led Angel and Beak to venture into Doctor Octopus's hideout, in order to protect him from the troublemaking Young Masters.[46] Next, they were put to the test against the Young Masters to prevent Loki from being enlisted to their cause, which resulted in the exile of Ms. America to the Sixth Dimension. This unfortunate incident left Angel and Beak in desperation.[47] The conflict escalated when they learned about an important event to take place in Latveria,[48] where the Teen Brigade prevailed over the Young Masters. However, cosmic balance remained imperiled with an imminent invasion from the Sixth Dimension. A shot fired by the Ultimate Nullifier at the In-Betweener restored the cosmic equilibrium.[49] The Teen Brigade eventually disbanded.[50]

Krakoa[]

It is assumed that Angel, similarly to Beak, had her mutant abilities restored due to exposure to the Mothervine virus during its worldwide outbreak.[51] Following Professor Xavier's establishment of the mutant haven on the island-nation of Krakoa, all mutants were granted citizenship and were offered a place to live[52] — an invitation that Angel and Beak opted to decline due to their commitment to Beak's ailing human father, who grappled with an uncommon form of dementia and required specialized care. In light of these familial responsibilities, the couple settled in a quaint farmhouse located in Pilger, Nebraska.[53] To ensure that all mutants could enjoy the sanctuary of the Krakoan society, Armor assembled a squad dedicated to tracking down missing mutants, which included Angel and Beak. At the Bohusk Farmhouse, Armor used Krakoan medicinal advancements to miraculously cure Beak's father, which would provide the young mutants the necessary comfort to move away.[12]

Vomiting gastric acid to fight the Bohem Cartel

Their celebration was cut short as tragedy lurked in the shadows, however. The mercenary group from Costa Perdita known as the Bohem Cartel, which was interested in the Krakoan drugs, followed Armor during her journey. They exploited Angel's and Beak's children as bargaining chips for the medicines.[12] Held at gunpoint for three days, the mutants were kept in captivity within the Bohusk Farmhouse having no access to their special powers. Being able to trick her captors into letting her utilize her corrosive digestive acid to feed her children, Angel used her powers to free Armor's team from confinement instead.[53] Although the Bohem Cartel was overpowered, their sinister leader Túmulo murdered Beak's parents. Moreover, Beak was wounded. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the telepathic twins Maxime and Manon inadvertently erased all memory of Beak's parents' tragic demise from the minds of Angel, Beak, and their children. In the ensuing days, Beak recovered at the Krakoan Healing Gardens and was nursed by Angel and their children, who joined the Krakoan society.[54]

Living on Krakoa, Angel settled in the Akademos Habitat, where young mutants communed in different activities. Wielding the temperature-controlling gauntlets from her days as the New Warriors Tempest, Angel lent her expertise to the training endeavors of the New Mutants.[14]

Powers

Angel is mutant granted with a suite of abilities that mirror the traits of a common housefly. Her metamorphosis has culminated in a range of physiological transformations that bestowed her with unique powers.[11]

Insectoid Physiology: During the onset of Angel's mutation, she spun a cocoon around herself akin to the transformative process experienced by houseflies during metamorphosis. Inside of it, her body's physical makeup was changed, resulting in the emergence of a singular pair of wings accompanied by the capacity to secrete and expel digestive acid.[11] Notably, her reproductive system also underwent a substantial shift, aligning with that of most insects. This transformation facilitated an accelerated gestation period, measured in mere days, and the production of eggs suspended upside down by an adhesive substance.[22]

Angel spitting acid

  • Acid Generation: One of Angel's most distinctive powers lies in her ability to produce and project a highly corrosive digestive acid. This substance serves as a potent defensive mechanism as well as it aids her in the consumption of solid food. With the potential to dissolve a wide array of materials, the acid proves a useful asset, since, in moments of peril, Angel can unleash copious volumes of it through regurgitation, echoing a housefly's natural defense strategy.[11][53] It is also used to pre-digest her food, softening it before consumption.[2][26]

Angel flying

  • Winged Flight: Following her emergence from the transformative cocoon, Angel has sported iridescent, cellophane-like wings that grant her the capacity of flight.[11] Her initial forays into flight were marked by a lack of aerial maneuverability,[11] though diligent effort and training allowed her to refine her skills over time.[55][19]
  • Sonic Vibrational Capacities: By rapidly vibrating her wings, Angel generates intense sonic shockwaves. The sonic effect possesses a staggering force, with the capability to shatter glass and incapacitate individuals with ordinary auditory perception in her vicinity.[11]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

Upon losing her mutant powers, Angel joined the ranks of the New Warriors, a cadre of youthful vigilantes who ingeniously replicated super human abilities through the use of advanced technology. Night Thrasher provided Angel with an arsenal comprising two distinct tools: a pair of temperature-controlling gauntlets and a set of anti-gravity discs.[38]

Tempest's gauntlets

  • Temperature-Controlling Gauntlets: At Angel's disposal are temperature-controlling gauntlets positioned on her wrists designed to conjure dichotomic extremes of heat and cold. On her right wrist, a gauntlet harnesses the power to unleash scorching flames, while the left wrist is adorned with its counterpart, created to conjure a frigid frost.[4] The gauntlets operate are charged with specialized pellets that engender either the searing heat or the icy chill,[56] each managed through a battery-driven mechanism.[36] The weapons of temperature manipulation empowers Angel with the capacity to wield elemental forces with precision, granting her a versatile edge in combat and tactical situations.[14]
  • Anti-Gravity Discs: One facet of Angel's technological repertoire is a set of anti-gravity discs, a technology originally devised and used by the criminal mastermind known as the Wizard. The gadgets mirror the dynamics of her earlier flight abilities, offering a means to traverse the skies through an alternate means. Distinct from her innate wings, these anti-gravity demanded a shift in her understanding of control and navigation.[35]

Notes

  • Angel was among the thousands of mutants who were depowered on M-Day.[32] However, she has appeared with her mutant abilities restored with no explicit explanations.[53] Given the precedent set by her depowered spouse, Beak, whose abilities were reinstated due to the virus Mothervine event,[51] it stands to reason that Angel and their children might have undergone a parallel transformation.

Trivia

  • In her early appearances during the New X-Men series, Angel's personality amalgamated challenging elements of avoidance and disrespect that in some occasions camouflaged brave and valiant ideals. Furthermore, she was physically depicted as a slightly overweight black teenager wearing afro-textured hair.[11] Subsequently, her depiction underwent a significant transformation. In the New Warriors (Vol. 4) series, Angel appeared as a skinny young woman with straightened hair.[4] Her demeanor was also simplified into a motherly, emotive, and overly affable disposition, signaling a departure from her original character tone.[38] In her next appearances in the Vengeance series, elements reminiscent of Angel's original appearance and personality were reintegrated,[58] but, in the more recent New Mutants (Vol. 4) series, Angel was once again portrayed in an oversentimental fashion.[59]
  • Irony envelops Angel's given name, which contrasts with her conduct and the repulsive mutant powers she wields. While the term "angel" typically conveys the notion of grace, Angel initially projected an irreverent demeanor and often engaged in questionable behavior. The incongruity between her name and her attitude was playfully acknowledged by Emma Frost.[16]
  • In her tenure as part of the New Warriors, Angel adopted the codename "Tempest," a term designating tumultuous storms that symbolizes turbulence or upheaval in a figurative sense as a synonym of "turmoil" or "mayhem".
