Synopsis for "This Gold Is Mine!"

This story is continued from Web of Spider-Man #6...

After the Beyonder turned an office building into solid gold,[1] the government, with the aid of the Kingpin, is secretly removing the gold as its discovery would ruin the world economy. Spider-Man, witness to the transformation of the building, rescued trapped people and learned of the Kingpin's involvement in return for several gold typewriters. Annoyed by not being rewarded while criminals profit, Spider-Man took a golden notepad for himself before leaving the scene.[2]

As Spider-Man web-slings away to his Soho apartment, the working day is beginning and office workers are being turned away at the military blockade. After learning from the news that the gold remains secret, Spider-Man falls asleep. Government agent Anderson instructs the military in loading the final trucks full of the gold. Ships, escorted by military aircraft, will carry the gold to a deep ocean trench near Puerto Rico.

A congressman working for the Kingpin relays information on the government plan to the Kingpin's minion the Arranger. When the Arranger brings this to his master, the Kingpin informs the Arranger that he is already aware of the plan and has devised a plot to benefit himself.

The next morning at the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson demands from his reporters information on the mysterious military operation in the middle of the city. Seeing Peter Parker, Jameson hopes that he has pictures of the operation. When Peter does not, Jameson loses his temper and orders everyone to get out of his sight and get an exclusive no matter what it takes.

Peter decides to change back into Spider-Man and watch Anderson, as he does not know whether the agent was ordered by the government to deal with the Kingpin. He is surprised to see how quickly the military has cleared the area and that the last shipment of gold is leaving. As this is happening, one of the military ships returning to New York is left alone by the escort aircraft, which assume that an empty ship is not at risk. The Arranger's minions capture the ship and replace its sailors, so that they can dump the last shipment of gold elsewhere along the route the Kingpin to retrieve later.

Arranger does not anticipate Anderson accompanying the final load, with Spider-Man—still suspicious of Anderson—following. When the ship leaves port, Spider-Man overhears as Anderson learns that the ship has been hijacked. Spider-Man attacks the Kingpin's men, the battle alerting the fighter pilots in the air who report back to base. Fearing that Spider-Man is trying to steal the gold, the military sends a fleet to intercept the ship. Spider-Man rounds up the Arranger and his men and prevent them from dumping the gold before it can reach the trench. When Anderson is recovered by the fleet he cannot confirm Spider-Man's involvement as he was knocked out at the time. As Spider-Man hitches a ride home on the outer hull of the vessel taking the Kingpin's goons back to New York, he is spotted by Anderson who salutes the Wall-Crawler.

As Spider-Man rides home, he realizes that he didn't get a single picture for J. Jonah Jameson and wonders how his day could get any worse. Meanwhile, the former herald of Galactus known as Firelord speeds toward the Earth.

Notes

Continuity Notes[]

  • Secret Wars II continues in Fantastic Four #282.
  • Spider-Man recounts his interaction with the Beyonder which ended with the Heroes for Hire building being turned into gold, and how he found out that the Kingpin is involved in the cleanup operation. These events occurred in Secret Wars II #2 and Web of Spider-Man #6 respectively.
  • Spider-Man is concerned about his neighbor Bambi, who likes to watch the sunset on the roof of his apartment building. He learned this in Amazing Spider-Man #266.
  • A sergeant that Agent Anderson speaks to is unnamed, but looks exactly like Sgt. Conrad "Duke" Hauser of the G.I. Joe Team. Given that the sergeant's unit has heavy lasers, and Anderson says that the soldiers "come so highly recommended from the President", the implication is that the White House sent G.I. Joe (headquartered on Staten Island) to handle the crisis.
  • The depiction of the original twin towers at the site of the World Trade Center should be considered a topical reference per the Sliding Timescale of Earth-616.
  • Anderson continues to guard the gold, as seen in Solo Avengers #17.
