History
Little was known about the early life of Alejandro Montoya, including when and how he took the idenity of the swashbuckling "El Águila." Born in Spain, Montoya was a mutant whose power manifested while he was still a teenager, but he kept it hidden.
In America, Montoya appeared as Águila as a champion for the poor of New York City, stopping criminals such as drug dealers and slum lords. It is probable that the money he confiscated from these criminals was redistributed to the poor. Since his activities were outside the law, Águila was wanted by the police and on several occaisions found himself in conflict with and somtimes working with Power Man and Iron Fist. Águila once found himself in conflict with the Avenger Hawkeye while investigating Cross Technological Enterprises, when Hawkeye was serving as their head of security.
Águila was suposedly depowered during the Decimation event.[1]
He was recently confirmed to be a 'Potential Recruit' for the Initiative.[2]Powers and Abilities
Powers
El Águila had the ability to discharge powerful electrostatic charges generated by his own body through a conductive medium. His body was capable of discharging a maximum of 100,000 volts, sufficient at 10 feet to kill a man or to stun a rhinoceros. He could mentally control the intensity of the blast, keeping it well within the non-lethal range. After fully depleting his store of bioelectricity, be it in one blast or successive blasts, it took him one half hour to recharge back to full strength. The maximum range at which his blast could propagate through air at sea level is 30 feet.
The major limitation of El Águila's bioelectric blast was that he had to be in contact with a conductive metal in order to release it. Accordingly, he carries a sword through which he shot his power. To protect the secret of his mutant nature, El Águila deliberately misled the public to believe that his sword housed an electric blaster.
There was a maximum amount of bioelectricity that El Águila's body would store: its full 100,000 volt charge. When it reached its full charge, his body would naturally discharge any excess energy in minute, harmless quantities. His body generates and stored this bioelectricity in his central nervous system.
