History

Abysmia from U.S.A

Abysmian People

Origin and early years[]

Abysmia was a kingdom located in Subterranea,[3] underneath the United States of America.[2] It was populated with the descendants of some of the first European settlers.

Abysmia was built upon the resting place of the True Darkhold.[2] Their domain was also home to various strange underground creatures and plants that are unique to their subterranean domain.[4] Abysmia was located near the city of the Pixies, the enemies of the Abysmians.[5]

1940s[]

The Abysmians were a flourishing culture of advance science,[4][2] with various technological devices that, at least in the 1940's, were more advanced than their surface cousins. They had an advanced cable car system, had developed special drilling devices to reach the surface world, and utilized "Vibrograph" devices that allow them to listen in on activities happening on the surface.[4] Abysmians had technology that allowed them to create localized earthquakes of varying force.[6]

Rockman speaking to his people

Its most prominent citizen, Rockman, was their leader in the 1940's.

The earthquake-creating technology of the Abysmians was used to help Rockman in his battles on the surface. Such a device was used to wipe out the private island owned by Zombo.[6] and later to finish Le Barbe and his gang by collapsing an Alaskan mine on them.[7] Rockman also removed the Pixies' leader and placed a Abysmian Prime Minister in his place to govern them as a democracy and stop their aggression against the surface world..[5]

The Abysmians went to war against the Evil One, but after one battle far from home, he managed to cut off Rockman from his people.[1]

After years of searching for them in vain, Rockman decided to go at the surface and do good as much as possible.[1] Rockman participated to the battle of Berlin at the end of World War II, alongside with other Allies heroes. As they were defeated, Rockman swore his people would come to save him. Once neutralized, they were put in freezing tubes. As the S.S. officers were captured ang hanged by the Red Army.[8]

Unheard except from Rockman, Abysmia wasn't heard about in the gap between his disappearance and reappearance;[9] The Abysmians were wiped out[2] under unrevealed circumstances.

Modern Age[]

Rockman and his fellow heroes remained in suspended animation in Berlin until 2008, when the facility was revealed by a construction crew.[8] Rockman kept the hope that his people would retrieve him, and pounded the floor of the cave in the compound where the heroes were housed.[9][1] Eventually, a woman presenting herself as the grand-niece of Rockman stated that Rockman's story was a fantasy, that he was in fact name Daniel Rose, a miner who had led efforts to unionize. The Evil One was Boss Clete, who tried to kill Rose in the mines but caused a cave-in that killed Rose's wife and daughter, causing him to snap, pounding the ground as if he was trying to reach his love ones. Eventually, he disappeared. This information wasn't given to Rockman, to save him from the grief.[10] Rockman was last seen searching for his family in subterranea, though he let the word out to his fellow heroes that he had found his princess.[11]

Somehow, Abysmia came to became property of Latveria. There, Doctor Doom recovered the true Darkhold which was buried underneath Abysmia and used the Vibrograph in combination with the Darkhold to open a portal to Chthon's realm. This unearthing brought the attention of the Scarlet Witch who came to prevent its use, and to urge Doom to cease his activities in fear of allowing Chthon's return.[2]

Notes

  • The existence of Abysmia and the Abysmian people has been thrown into question in the Twelve series.[9] Though, it was stated Rockman actually seemed to believe his own origin story as far as Dick Jones, the Phantom Reporter; could tell. When defrosted, the US military had no name to apply to Rockman.[8] It was revealed that Rockman may really be Daniel Rose, a miner who disappeared in the 1940's, following a massive mine explosion that wiped out his family and hometown. The idea is that Abysmia and his Rockman identity could be a fabrication that Rose established in order to cope with his loss.[10] Twelve #11 seemingly confirmed this version by having Rockman see memories of his mining days alongside his Rockman fantasy. However, Darkhold Alpha #1 proved that Abysmia in fact existed.
