History
Little is known about the Vishanti's origins. All three are ancient and very powerful; Agamotto has claimed to be older than the Earth itself (although Oshtur, who was born many years after the creation of Earth, mothered Agamotto; even then Oshtur may have time-travelled to a pre-Earth moment to give birth to Agamotto, or mothering him in any of the Limbo-like realities where time does not work as on Earth) and "hoary" Hoggoth might be even older. The Vishanti, especially Agamotto, have protected the Earth's dimension for billions of years. Thousands of years ago, the human known only as Aged Genghis sought out the Vishanti and asked them for knowledge and mystical power. In return, Aged Genghis would gather the most powerful mages and sorcerers on Earth every century to test them. The strongest would become Earth's Sorcerer Supreme. The Sorcerer Supreme would protect Earth's dimension for the Vishanti and fight their enemies and in return could call upon the powers of the Vishanti.
Presumably around this time, the Vishanti created or influenced the creation of the Book of the Vishanti, as counterpart to the Darkhold, a book of black magic created by the Elder God Chthon.
Near the end of the 20th century, the Vishanti and various other magical entities went to war. This war was known as the War of the Seven Spheres. During this war the Vishanti were matched against their counterpart, the Trinity of Ashes. The Vishanti expected Doctor Strange, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme to fight at their side, but when they mentioned that they expected the war to last for several millennia, Strange refused, not wanting Earth to remain unprotected for so long, and rejected the Vishanti's power. Nearly powerless, Stephen Strange was driven from Earth, by the ancient sorceress Salome. Salome offered her services to the Vishanti in exchange for power. The Vishanti found the amoral Salome repulsive, but accepted her offer in their need for soldiers. Still, Agamotto warned Strange about the deal Salome made with them. Shortly afterward, Strange found a new source of power: he tapped into the mystical power of the Earth itself. With this new power, Salome was defeated and the Vishanti approached Strange again and asked him to become their soldier, feeling that with this new source of power Strange was even more valuable and even threatened to kill him should he not comply. This time, Strange, feeling that he owed the Vishanti for all their support over the years, agreed under the condition that they would return him in time after the war ended to the moment he had left the Earth, so that the Earth would not remain unprotected. During the War, Doctor Druid acted as the avatar of Slorioth. Slorioth would take hold of Earth, as all other deities were preoccupied with the war. None would notice the attempt until it was too late. Fortunately, the Vishanti were alerted to Slorioth's actions by Gaea's vassal, and aware that a conflict with Slorioth would destroy Earth and its plane of existence, The Vishanti summoned the Living Tribunal to arbitrate the issue between gods. In the end, Slorioth was removed from earth "for the nonce." According to Hoggoth and Oshtur, the first law of the Vishanti is that "With great power there must also come great responsibility."

Though the full extent of the power of the Vishanti is unknown, they are of enough power to back the various Sorcerers and Sorceresses Supreme of the Marvel Universe for millennia into preventing mystical threats from taking a permanent toll on reality and life on Earth. Having never appeared to any human, even those trained in the occult, in their true aspect, which no mortal mind could comprehend and remain sane, instead appearing in a variety of disguised physical forms. As the first Sorcerer Supreme Agamotto of the Vishanti had sufficient power to hold his own against threats of such scale as Dormammu (who many millennia later would attempt to seize Agamotto’s Eye, deeming it of sufficient threat to his own purposes), the united might of the Vishanti is superior to that of Dormmamu’s, Galactus's, and that of any deity on Earth, such as the alliance of the Council of Godheads, as Dormammu himself has claimed he is the equal of Odin and Zeus; Oshtur herself was one of Earth’s Elder Gods, sister of Gaea, Set, Chthon and the Gibborim. The Vishanti were also able to together summon the Living Tribunal in a realm not of their own, while the combined efforts of Uatu and Galactus was required, even in their native reality, to summon Eternity. The Vishanti are thought by Doctor Strange to be genderless. An open clash between the Vishanti and Slorioth was said to release sufficient "macro-cosmic" energies to ravage the entire Marvel Universe. The Vishanti are bitter and eternal foes of Shuma-Gorath, having fought with him "long ago" but failing to destroy him for good, even aiding Doctor Strange directly against his forces, such as Sligguth, removing the dampening effect of the town's dark aura to even the odds for Strange, and are also opposed to the less benevolent union of the Trinity of Ashes. Even a fraction of the full power of the Vishanti sent across dimensions to Salome was sufficient to annihilate entire planets with one spell.
Doctor Strange, the Ancient One and other past Sorcerers Supreme have frequently relied upon the magic of the Vishanti, as have certain skilled mystics for benevolence, such as the Sorcerer Supreme’s apprentice Clea and the multi-ethnic group of magicians gathered by the Aged Genghis as candidates for the Sorcerer Supreme title. The power of the Vishanti together has been invoked for a near-infinite range of effects, such as temporary paralysis on others, to stop another from levitating, manipulating matter on an atomic level conjure the Illusion of Reality, counter the power of Watoomb by banishing his Winds, dispel a spirit form, conjure the Circle of Cyttorak, renew Dr. Strange’s strength and protect the innocents from “blasphemous fear”, enable the Shades of the Seraphim to banish the Vapors of Valtorr, enable multiple people to return to their own time, hurl back dark hordes, summon all the forces of good and focus their blinding power at an opponent through a ring, teleport sorcerers and others across dimensions, banish Eerie Imprisoning Mists, convert demons to justice, banish a being to its home dimension, conjure a giant hand from a shadowy dimension, banish dark forces, release others by banishing their enchanted prisons, banish the Mystic Maze of Madness, control the Cloak of Levitation, banish skeletal illusions, transmute ordure to water, exert mental control over others with an Enchantment that None Can Resist, summon astral forms to the Earthly plane, conjure magical light for illumination, enchant a window design with a seal to repel invaders both supernatural and not so, among many other effects, teleport others back to places even if the sorcerer has not physically been there, project beams of destructive energy from their eyes, and easily banish the Ygothic Cyclopeans, the very "antithesis of Creation" when Strange's own powers and spells only caused them to multiply instead of destroying them. The Vishanti together are the greatest trinity of magical beings in the Multiverse (though they themselves are not apparently multiversal in nature).
