Distinguish Remove Bug
Your bot that's going through removing the Distinguish fields seems to be a bit buggy. Ran across a couple of pages where there were bits of words left over and were being included in the CurrentAlias field...making some TRULY odd names. Don't know if you're aware or not, but I figured you'd like to know...assuming you don't. --GrnMarvl14 23:47, November 7, 2009 (UTC)

Iron Man Disambig
Thanks for the help on that page. Yeah, it takes a while to load; I hope it won't be a problem. The Alternate section goes past 32 entries. Does that need to be fixed in the template?
- Alright, I'm baffled. Iron Man, Hulk, and Psylocke are what I'm working on. All three of them have links to their comics, but they all look different. On some of them, adding "Needed.jpg" creates a link to the Needed Reality. On Hulk, the picture for Earth-776 doesn't show up even though it exists. Hulk's movie links are jacked, Psylocke's Alternate's are jacked...HELP!!
- Artful Dodger 20:59, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
- Super thanks again. What was the problem with Hulk and Psylocke? I couldn't see any reason why the "Needed" would generate an odd link.
- It makes sense about the comics. *sniff*...
- Artful Dodger 18:58, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, but the Needed.jpg is giving me weird stuff on more of the character Disambigs. Iceman has a weird link and I keep seeing them on my own test page. I have looked at the Template:Text and cannot see what I can do to fix it. When you have time...
- Artful Dodger 18:29, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yo, bro. Can you pump up the "Others" category to more than 16? Angel has some that aren't showing up.
- Artful Dodger 21:30, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
- Going for a record on the longest back-and-forth message... I have been thinking about the character disambigs and I am having trouble with the "Related" section. Almost any "related" character is actually the same character, just in another universe. Often I see the 1602 characters in the Related section, but I think they really belong in the Alternate section. So...I was thinking that I could put X-23 as a Related Wolverine...and then I realized that we should have an actual "Family" section (unless that's what Related has meant this entire time and I am just now getting it through my thick skull).
- Yeah, anyway, I suck at modifying the Disambiguation code, so could you (once again) heed my humble cry and add a family section with 16 boxes? I don't know if anyone will need that many (maybe the Greys and Summers), but better safe than sorry. Your thoughts?

Hi!
No problem! I just want to help, cause it's so frustrating when you se villains and heros in your favorite comics and you can't find out who they are.
T:Cid
Hey babe! One of our ops guys noticed a problem that was happening with DC earlier today -- there was a request that kept timing out, and there were more requests coming before the previous ones had timed out, over and over. It turns out that it was Brian, editing the Vamps/Covers page. I asked Brian about it on his talk page, and then looked into it some...
It looks like the Template:Cid page is actually very wearing on the wiki. It makes a lot of calls to other pages before it'll load the page, especially if it has an item that doesn't have the date filled in. I got a page render time of more than 12 seconds on Stan Woch/Gallery, when the average across Wikia is less than a second.
Now, you guys do a lot of crazy stuff with templates, and mostly it just slows down your own wiki -- but this one actually raised to the level of being noticeable for all of Wikia. What do you think we can do?
I hope you're doing good -- talk to you soon! -- Danny
(talk) 23:57, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hey Danny!
- I left a similar message on Brian's talk page, but I had just figured out a better way to accomplish this goal a week or so ago, so I implemented it both on Marvel and DC. You shouldn't see any more problems from that template. Maybe the Ops guys could check it out now to make sure we're in the green?
- Thanks for the heads up! :)
- — Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talk • contribs • email) 14:47, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- I'm glad you changed it, but it's actually still pretty slow. The way I'm checking is by loading a page, clicking command-U to view the source, and then searching for the bit that says "served by". That gives you the page render time on our end.
- I looked at the page Comics:X-Men: The Manga Vol 1 -- it's got 26 pictures, and it's served in 3.6 seconds. This page has one picture, served in 2.1 seconds; this page has one picture, and is served in 2.4 seconds. I just looked at Marvel Database:Comic Template, and just the template page alone was served in 3.2 seconds.
- As a comparison, the Sesame Street Discography page on Muppet Wiki has 154 pictures, and is served in .14 seconds; Super Grover has 60 pictures, and is served in .3 seconds. I just looked around at some other complicated wikis, and I couldn't find any page that was served in more than a second. Hitting random page here, I can't find any that serve in less than 2 seconds, and some are more than 5.
- So -- I think you guys are choking under the weight of the explodable templates. And what you're doing with Cid really could be done by hand, with not very much more effort. I do stuff like that all the time, adding dates into galleries. It's not very hard to do, and in my opinion, it's not worth adding seconds to every page load. What do you think? -- Danny

- Our templates have a ton of extra things going on in them, so I wonder if the grabbing of the month and year is really the bit that's slowing us down. You mention 'explodable', is that specifically referring to the #explode parser function? We found out that the #ifexist function was pretty server-heavy, and modified our behavior to use it less. I'm sure the same thing could be said for other bits. I don't personally care about adding dates into galleries and such myself, but saw a large amount of users doing so in 1000's of different ways, so I figured I'd create a single format for them. The existing template can be modified to be set up for one-time use, where the first time it's used is the only time it draws on those resources, and writes them to the page from then on.
- Interesting about our comparitive slowness though, I never notice anymore now that we got comic pages down from 7 seconds+ per page. :)
- — Nathan (Peteparker) (Earth-1218) (talk • contribs • email) 22:38, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I don't know what bits are causing slowness... You'd probably know that better than me. I know about Cid because that happened to create a noticeable problem on DC yesterday, but I don't know if that's the worst offender or not.
- Thinking about an approach to standardizing formats... If a new editor tries to add a date to a gallery, then you always have to teach them the right way to do it. So you can either teach them to write (September, 1982), or to write {{cid| etc... Either way, they'll probably do the wrong thing the first time, and you'll have to show them the right thing. The only difference is that the template creates server load, and writing the date doesn't. Or am I missing something? -- Danny

Sunset Riders
Hey Nathan,
Listen, I ended up creating a page for a comic which already existed... I called it THE Sunset Riders, while he left out the the. I have transferred the material from my page Comics:Two-Gun Kid: The Sunset Riders Vol 1 1, into his after I found that there were two. I was just wondering if you'd be able to delete this redundant page for me.
Thanks Domakesaythink 16:29, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks I appreciate it. As for the title, I think either is acceptable, the cover says The Sunset Riders while the publishing info on the first page just says Sunset Riders. Either way, it looks good now, thanks again!

Re: contributors need more tools for efficient editing
Hi Nathan. What are the chances of getting the coders to add to "Database" an option "Credits" that would give sub-options for "Title","Penciler","Writer","Inker" etc. so if I clicked on them it would list every template in the database without an entry in that field? You know, like how under "Gallery", there is an "Images Needed" section that breaks down into "Covers Needed" etc? That is very helpful and if we could get the internal structure of the templates examinable in the same way it would be a much more efficient use of editing time than clicking on templates at random to see if editors have made contributions to them.
Darkseid01 13:40, September 4, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. That would help a great deal. Much of the time, if even "Penciler" is blank, it is a blank template, so having the ability to zero in on these will allow the database to fill up sooner. It would also be nice to have a tool that would check an image licensed as "Comic Book Cover" to see if a corresponding template with the same name has been created. That wouldn't help if the uploaded didn't follow the naming conventions, but it would still pick out a great deal of issue numbers that need templates to be created.
Darkseid01 15:06, September 4, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for taking the time to set those up. :)

Max imprint
Hey Nathan,
Sorry to bother you again. I was just wondering if you knew if the events portrayed under the Max imprint are regarded as Earth-616 canon, and if not, do you know what universe number it is under?

Description in Comic List
I love the new template which adds the dates to the header on the Comic List. Is there a field for a description? Do we need one?
Artful Dodger 14:32, September 5, 2009 (UTC)
Well that's good about Apache Skies, because I've already updated several character histories using that data, lol. The Rawhide Kid series puzzles me a little though, because in that story arc the Kid is portrayed as ultra-flamboyantly homosexual (The story title being "Slap Leather," Lol). Now I don't have a problem with that at all, but it makes it a little harder to piece together the continuity of it all because no other series even hinted at the Rawhide Kid being gay. In fact, in Apache Skies, which is supposed to occur years after the events of this series, there seems to be some underlying sexual tension going on between the Kid and Rosa Kare (Earth-616). But anyway, if you say it's in-continuity, that's cool, I'll fit the info into his history somewhere.
Thanks again for your help! Domakesaythink 22:40, September 6, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, ever since I made it my personal mission to compile all of Marvel's western titles and characters for the database (it's going to take FOREVER), I've been particularly interested in the Rawhide Kid and this series just doesn't mesh with anything else I've ever read, so I felt like it must have been an alternate version. From what I've heard it wasen't really very well received, and apparently the gay thing caused some controversy at the time, it doesn't really suprise me that there isn't a whole lot written about it. But yeah, asking the writer if at all possible would be awesome!! Ron Zimmerman wrote the story and it was drawn by the great John Severin. Man, I always appreciate the help! Thanks again!!

New Comic Page
Hey man,
I just made a page for this comic, Mighty Marvel Western - Western Legends, but I don't know if I did it right or how to get rid of all the red links. I usually add pages to series' that have already been catalogued, but this one doesn't exist anywhere in the database. This is just one of four one-shots that were released a few years ago... I've got all the info for all the others as well, so some help on how to properly create and edit the pages would be much appreciated.

Re: problems displaying images
Hi Nathan. In recent weeks about roughly 50% of the images that have been uploaded to a page will not display on my computer when I click on that page. I don't know if this problem is on my end or wikia's but I've been trying to be productive around my partial blindness. However, when a cover photo has been uploaded by someone who disregards the naming convention, and is one the images that seemingly at random refuses to display, I can't hover my mouse over the image to get the name the uploader used so I can type that into the gallery listing. Is there any way I can determine the name of an image file associated with a particular issue template? The name I'm looking for atm is the cover to G.I. Joe Special Missions #1.

Re: New Universe
Actually, I thought this stuff sucked when I picked up a few issues from the bargin bins collecting back in the 80s, but I OCR'd the promo pages from Marvel Age and I thought I'd share the information if anyone was interested. I don't think that solicits have much information, but I think it is better than nothing until someone finds the time to write a detailed synopsis. I'm under no illusions that even if this site is still here five years hence, many of my posts will remain untouched simply because the interest just isn't there.

House of M characters
I got the information about the characters from the bio of the House of M Hulk page on Marvel.com, i figured that if their mentioned on a site such as that than they must be canon.

Re: synopsis needed
Hi Nathan. It seems to me that the category task 'synopsis needed' is of limited functionality simply because it is so large. With 18,160 templates without synopsis much of these will remain so because no one is ever going to write one. Would it be possible to write code that does the reverse of the category task? I would love to have a button on my user page that checks a template to see if there is anything under the synopsis section besides 'Not Yet Written' and flags that issue as one where a contributor has made an entry.
Darkseid01 18:57, October 4, 2009 (UTC)
Hulk: Broken Worlds
Yeah, the series is real, but none of the characters you mentioned were in the HoM story from that series (or even mentioned. The only background info we got from that is that Banner knew Betty and Glenn Talbot from before he went to Australia). And I can't recall him mentioning them when Incredible Hulk crossed into the House of M event (though that has been...what? Four years? So...take that statement for what it's worth). --GrnMarvl14 19:35, October 4, 2009 (UTC)
Re: synopsis information from other sources
Hi Nathan. I was reading your comment about uncannyxmen.net on Marvel and DC editor's talkpage. That's where most of my stuff is taken for the mutant books because they're so comprehensive. I was going to get around to posting that stuff here, but since I know it's forbidden, I won't bother. I also have alot from comics.org, but since they don't post contact info for the issue contributor, I'd have no way of contacting them to ask them if it's ok, so I guess they're out of the picture as well. My question is about the Official Index series 2009. I'm not sure why a distinction is being made between 'Solicit synopsis' and 'synopsis', because so few contributors bother to write one, but if that's what the Powers That Be have decided, I'll go along with the program. Obviously the Solicit synopsis entries are taken from another source, usually Marvel. I would assume they are ok with that otherwise they would have been removed. I was going to OCR the current Index series and post the Spider-Man and Iron Man issues, but I didn't know if it would go under 'Solicit' since it is Marvel material, or if it's forbidden, in which case I won't bother. Anyway, I'm not a lawyer and I don't want to be one, it seems weird to debate these issues since NONE of us have any ownership rights over this material. It may be moral not to take a couple of sentences I've written down under the Atlas stories and re-use them without my permission, but I haven't copyrighted those words and sure most if not all of the posters here haven't either, so I wouldn't think I'd have a legal leg to stand on if I wanted to complain about it. (For the record, I don't mind if anyone at comics.org and any other website wishes to reproduce my Atlas synopses)

Re: where do I put it?
Hi Nathan. I've been thinking of going through my collection of scans and seeing if I've got any that are ctc from '97 up, then OCRing the 'Previously' section from the inside front cover and posting it here. Again, I know that it isn't much information, but I think it is better than nothing especially since many of the less popular issues may never get a little editor love. Is it ok if I put it under the 'Synopsis' section or would you prefer I list it under 'Solicit'? Or do you have no preference? They are not really solicits since they're not taken from Previews, but as a synopsis, they are pretty lousy and hopefully someday someone will write a detailed synopsis. I would've loved this site as a kid. I've read over 10,000 comic books. I would've enjoyed posting the plots for everyone else as I was going along, but I'm not to set aside the time to re-read 10,000 comics. I wish the internet had been around back then.

JavaScript errors
Hi! Recently we have been working on reducing the number of JavaScript errors that users experience when they visit Wikia. We've been able to eliminate most (but not all) of the ones caused by the skin and ads, so now we are helping users fix errors in the JavaScript that they create for their own wikis.
Currently, visitors to marvel.wikia.com see the second-largest number of errors of any wiki, so I have asked Meitar, one of our newest front-end engineers, to take a look at the code and help repair it to restore all of the original functionality and eliminate the errors. You don't need to do anything. I just wanted to let you know now so that you are not surprised if you see him modifying the JavaScript files. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. If you could let anyone else who might be interested or concerned know, that would be great.
Thanks! --KyleH
