Quote1 Being of an immortal race, I have ever pondered what, if anything, comes after the event mortals call "death." Today, I may well learn. Whatever transpires, I will remain true to my charge, and observe all that occurs. A fitting end, I think, for the being known as--the Watcher. Quote2
Uatu the Watcher[src]

Uatu is one of the Watchers, a highly advanced race of cosmic beings who have vowed only to watch and never to interfere,[5] although Uatu is rather infamous among them for breaching this vow many times.[6][7] Primarily watching over Earth, as each Watcher is given a sector of space to observe,[8][9][10] the Watcher created a Citadel on the Blue Area of the Moon.[11] However, he can and often does watch other parts of the cosmos, following the lives of heroes and villains alike and to observe events of cosmic importance.[12][13][14][15][16] In addition, he has portals to view other realities to ponder "What if?"[17][18][19][7]

Due to his love for the planet, he sometimes helps its heroes, often the Fantastic Four, against notable threats such as the Molecule Man,[5] Galactus,[20] the Over-Mind,[21] the Beyonder,[22] the Immortus Wave,[23] the Rogue Watcher,[24] the Reckoning,[25] and more.

In the aftermath of the Reckoning War, most of the Watchers lost their cosmic sight but Uatu absorbed the knowledge of the Apex of All Reality and became the one and only Watcher (at least on Earth-616).[26]

History

Early Life[]

Billions of years ago, the technologically-advanced extraterrestrial race known as the Watchers decided it was their duty to help the universe's less advanced races. In their first such experiment, proposed by Ikor, a delegation of four brought atomic energy knowledge to the planet Prosilicus. The Prosilicans accepted the gift, but used it to develop nuclear weapons and engaged in an auto-genocidal war. Ashamed of their actions, the Watchers vowed never again to interfere in the affairs of other races.[27] Uatu tried to convince Ikor, his father, that his deeds were noble, despite the outcome, but the words fell on deaf ears.[18]

After the Prosilican incident, Ikor drafted a code of ethics based upon strict noninterference and passive observation.[28] Uatu asked his father if their vow of non-interference would be a hindrance to races that were in serious danger. Ikor advised his son that no matter what, they should never interfere in the affairs of another alien world ever again. Now calling themselves the Watchers, they traveled the universe viewing everything they encountered. Thousands of years later, Uatu came across a situation that tested the vow of his people when he witnessed the Yrds disposing of atomic waste by jettisoning it into space, potentially threatening some other distant world with destruction. Uatu watched the mass of atomic waste for decades when one day he witnessed a supernova jettison a rogue planet into space. Uatu witnessed as the planet struck the cloud of atomic waste, destroying both. This reinforced in Uatu's mind that his father was right, that they should leave things to fate.[28] Eventually, the Watchers assigned themselves onto the moons of various inhabited worlds to observe activities there. Uatu was assigned to the planet Earth and constructed a citadel on the Blue Area of Earth's moon.[11] Not only did Uatu watch history on Earth, but also took an interest in viewing his chosen world in alternate universes.[17] His initial intentions were also to find a reality where his people did not make their grave error, however, to date, Uatu has yet to find such a reality.[18]

Uatu -- or simply the Watcher as he became known -- had his first recorded encounter with an Earthling in the year 1602 AD, when a possible-future Captain America was inadvertently sent back in time to that era causing ripples in the time-stream that threatened the very fabric of reality. Uatu revealed the nature of the problem to an Elizabethan-era version of Dr. Stephen Strange who helped send the temporally-displaced Captain America back through a time-portal, correcting the timeline.[29] Uatu's superior, however, allowed the divergent timeline, Earth-311, to persist in a pocket dimension.[30]

20th Century[]

In the 1950s, his citadel was compromised by scientists Howard Stark and Nathaniel Richards. However, their release was negotiated by the costumed hero known as the Destroyer and his V-Battalion.[31] In 1962, the Watcher met Blue Marvel, a supremely powerful African-American hero struggling to find a place in America, which at the time was in the midst of a Civil Rights movement. After winning a Presidential Medal of Freedom the Blue Marvel went to the moon to mull over his situation, growing angry and striking the ground. The commotion brought out the Watcher, who tried to impart his wisdom over living creatures' desire to kill their own brothers despite the color of their skin. Their conversation was cut short when the Blue Marvel acted to stop an incoming alien invasion.[32] The Watcher later observed the destruction and rebuilding of the planet Xandar after it was blown apart by Luphomoid invaders.[33]

After a number of decades of silent observation, the Watcher detected a temporal disturbance and drew it to his citadel. It turned out to be a human scientist named Cassandra Locke a time traveler from the 22nd Century of Earth-700. This was on the eve when the group of heroes known as the First Line were engaged in preventing an invasion of Earth by the Skrulls. When the Watcher refused to interfere, Cassandra teleported herself aboard one of the invasion fleets to try and help. The Watcher stood by as the First Line sacrificed their lives to stop the invasion, while Cassandra went further back in time to learn what she could. The Watcher was later visited by training mystic Stephen Strange, telling him what he had witnessed. Uatu then revealed to Strange three people he thought would some day usher in a new age of heroes: Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, and Henry Pym.[34]

Revealing Himself to the Fantastic Four[]

Many years later a new group of heroes, known as the Fantastic Four were born when Cosmic Rays mutated them into superhumans. Incidentally, their leader was Reed Richards -- aka Mr. Fantastic.[35] One of their early adventures took them exploring the Blue Area of the Moon. Upon arrival on the moon they were attacked by similarly cosmic ray enhanced Russian scientist the Red Ghost and his Super-Apes. A battle broke out between both sides prompting the Watcher to reveal himself to the Red Ghost and the Fantastic Four's Thing. Uatu revealed his life's mission and allowed the two factions continue their battle on the Moon's surface. When the Fantastic Four were the victors, the Watcher revealed himself once more and encouraged them to keep seeking out the stars before deciding to leave to avoid being interrupted once again. The Fantastic Four returned to Earth, while the Red Ghost and his Super-Apes were left stranded on the moon.[11]

The Watcher reveals himself to the Thing and Red Ghost

Sometime after this, the Watcher came to warn the Fantastic Four of the danger of the Molecule Man, a man who could control inorganic molecules. When the Watcher was satisfied that the Fantastic Four had defeated their foe, he then stepped in and captured the Molecule Man, telling them that the foe would not threaten their world again before undoing the damage done by the Molecule Man and returning to his silent observation of the Earth.[5]

Observing Other Worlds[]

On his absence from Earth, the Watcher began watching various other worlds and alternate universes that could potentially pose a threat to the Earth he was assigned to watch. He witnessed as the alien Sneepers began waiting for the human race to annihilate themselves before launching a take over of the planet.[36] He also observed various alternate realities where the human race advanced many years.[37] Returning to the moon the Watcher was observing the Earth one day when he was visited by an alien named Xakku who sought to steal Earth's sun but wanted to ensure that the Watcher would not interfere. After confirming this, Xakku explained his actual plot. While the Watcher was sworn not to interfere, he did keep Xakku detained by asking him questions about his homeworld long enough for the alien's ship to sink in the bog it was landed on stranded Xakku on the moon and leaving him for dead. When Xakku begged for help, the Watcher reminded him that he could not interfere.[38] When the Red Ghost stranded the Fantastic Four on the moon for revenge over his previous defeat, the Watcher allowed the Fantastic Four to seek refuge in his citadel while he was away from the planet, but asked them to defend his devices from the Red Ghost. When the Fantastic Four defeated the Red Ghost by knocking him through a portal the Watcher thanked them by returning the Fantastic Four to Earth so he could continue observing other worlds.[39]

Uatu next observed a world of barbarians where two tribes were fighting over the beautiful Queen Kalthea. The Watcher instantly fell in love with the beautiful blonde but refused to interfere until one of the barbarians threatened her life. Appearing between the queen and the barbarian, Uatu frightened the barbarian away. Kalthea was so grateful to the Watcher she offered to rule her world as her consort. Realizing that he could not possibly get involved in such a way due to his oath, the Watcher refused and then began acting arrogant so that Queen Kalthea would reject him. The Watcher then returned to his citadel on Earth's moon returning to his silent observation of the Earth.[40] The Watcher was later visited by a ship full of space pirates that were seeking to loot a distant planet. After confirming that the Watcher was sworn not to interfere with other races, they began constructing a massive cannon to fire at the alien world. Before they could attack the Watcher suddenly destroyed their weapon and banished the pirates to a distant world -- revealing that the world that they chose to attack was the homeworld of the Watchers, the only world he could step in to assist.[41]

Renewed Focus on Earth[]

The Watcher then began focusing his observations back to the Earth, alternating between living on his citadel on the Moon, or on the Watcher homeworld. Uatu observed how the Avengers prevented the Earth from becoming a battleground between the Kallusian and Yirbek races.[42] Detecting the time traveler Kang the Conqueror was trying to conquer the 6th Century, the Watcher enlisted the aid of the Fantastic Four's Thing and Human Torch, sending them back in time to stop Kang and preserve history.[43] When the Fantastic Four's Reed Richards and Susan Storm were to be married, their old foe Dr. Doom used an Emotion Changer device to force an army of super villains to crash the wedding. While the super heroes in attendance fought off the attackers the Watcher appeared before Reed Richards offering his aid. Transporting Reed to his citadel, the Watcher allowed Reed to choose a weapon of his choice to repel the invaders. Reed selected a Time Displacer that banished all the villains to where they came and erased their memories of the attack. Thanks to Uatu's assistance, the wedding continued without further interruption.[44][45] As a wedding gift, Uatu allowed Reed and Sue to have their honeymoon at his citadel.[46]

Galan (Earth-616), Uatu (Earth-616), and Fantastic Four (Earth-616) from Fantastic Four Vol 1 49 001

The Watcher confronts Galactus

While the Watcher typically kept his vow of non-interference, this all changed when he discovered that the Silver Surfer, herald of Galactus was coming to scout the planet Earth as a potential meal for his master. Using sophisticated devices, the Watcher attempted to mask the Earth from detection using holograms of fire and debris, causing a worldwide panic. The Watcher also warned the Fantastic Four of the coming danger, and they battled the Surfer. However, despite his best efforts the Watcher was unable to prevent Galactus from reaching Earth.[47] When Uatu was unable to convince Galactus to spare the Earth, he boosted the Human Torch's powers and guided him through hyperspace to the Worldship of Galactus to recover the Ultimate Nullifier, the only weapon known to be powerful enough to destroy an entire universe and the one item that Galactus feared.[48] When the Torch succeeded in his mission the Watcher guided him back to Earth where Mr. Fantastic used the Ultimate Nullifier to force Galactus to surrender. After banishing the Surfer into exile for helping the Fantastic Four, Galactus left the Earth to seek out a new world to consume. With the threat passed, the Watcher returned to his citadel on the Moon.[49]

When the gamma-ray mutated genius, the Leader, became aware of the existence of the Watcher and his world and the technological bounties there, he sent the Hulk to the Watcher's homeworld to recover the so-called Ultimate Machine. Sworn to not interfere, the Watcher allowed the Hulk to collect what he sought, but the gamma-spawned brute was attacked by the Amphibian, an alien also seeking out the power of the Ultimate Machine.[50] When it was clear that the Hulk was the victor of the battle, Uatu teleported the Amphibian away, so none of his devices or exhibits could get destroyed. The Watcher then allowed the Hulk to take the Ultimate Machine and leave. When the Leader dawned the Ultimate Machine, it's combined knowledge proved too much for even his enhanced brain and he was seemingly slain by the device.[51] When the Hulk later abandoned the Ultimate Machine, the Watcher recovered the Ultimate Machine before its power could be abused further.[52] Sometime after this, the Fantastic Four's foe Dr. Doom had stolen the Power Cosmic from the Silver Surfer. In order to avoid the temptation of interfering the Watcher left the universe. Even without the Watcher's assistance the Fantastic Four were still able to defeat.[53] The Watcher had begun setting up space traps that would allow him to examine meteors by this time. When signaled that one of these traps had caught something, the Watcher was mortified that he caught the slumbering form of the artificial being known as Him. Not wishing to interfere further in Him's life, the Watcher freed the slumbering cocoon and placed it in a NASA satellite and sent it back to Earth.[54]

Later when the Silver Surfer decided to wage war against the human race in order to unite the planet against the common foe, the Watcher warned the Fantastic Four of the danger, allowing the group to track down the Surfer and convince him of the errors of his ways.[55] The Watcher also observed his reality's Avengers go up against their Earth-689 counterparts who were being used as pawns of the Scarlet Centurion. After the Avengers of his world succeeded the Watcher informed the Avengers of the connection between the Scarlet Centurion, Kang the Conqueror and Rama-Tut.[56]

Uatu on Trial[]

Eventually, Uatu disgraced himself completely, by physically opposing the Kree soldier Captain Mar-Vell after allying himself with the Lunatic Legion, a Kree faction opposed to Mar-Vell who were led by Zarek, Fer-Porr and Sro-Himm and based in the Moon's Blue Area.[57] Placed on trial by his own people for his numerous violations of their ethics code, Uatu explained that he had come to identify with the action and emotion that he observed on Earth and thus yearned to become involved. At the conclusion of his trial, Uatu was released from custody on his own recognizance after promising never to interfere in the affairs of other races again.[1]

A'Sai[]

Later, Uatu was captured by intergalactic gambler A'Sai via a weapon from one of Galactus' former worldships. Uatu allowed himself to be coerced into a football wager-- Uatu's technology vs. A'Sai's weapon--but, when Spider-Man led Uatu's team to victory, Uatu destroyed the weapon and transformed A'Sai into a casino playing card as punishment for his intent to renege.[58] Uatu also saved the life of Bette Chekov, granddaughter of Anton, one of May Parker's former boarders.[59]

Quasar[]

When the criminal Living Laser tried to escape Quasar by flying into Uatu's alternate worlds portal[60] and diverged into separate beings in seven different alternate realities, Uatu enlisted Quasar to recapture the Living Lasers.[61] Based on the Watcher Otmu's theory that even observation affected others, the "Oblivion Plague" caused many Watchers to end their existences; though perpetuated by Maelstrom, the Plague was ended when Quasar convinced the Watchers that they must continue to observe so they could pass on their accumulated recordings to the next universe.[62]

Aron the Rogue Watcher[]

Present at Uatu's earlier trial was his nephew Aron, a relatively young Watcher mentored by his uncle who was not yet assigned a solar system to observe. Fascinated by Earth, Aron eventually broke the Watchers' code by manipulating the Fantastic Four and Inhumans into a fight. Now a "rogue" Watcher, Aron grew more malevolent; after cloning the Fantastic Four[63] and trying to create a pocket world within the mind of Alicia Masters, Aron was ambushed by Doctor Doom who siphoned Aron's power into a containment device.[64]

Uatu cared for Aron as his nephew recovered; but, before Aron could be tried for his crimes, the Watchers became preoccupied with the threat posed by the giant cosmic entities known as the Celestials. Aron seized this opportunity to masquerade as his uncle Uatu and manipulate the Fantastic Four into helping him recover the energy stolen from him by Doom. Completing the first phase of his plan, Aron plotted to swallow the entire universe into a black hole and then create a new universe for him to manipulate.[65]

Opposed by the Fantastic Four and Fantastic Force, Aron pitted legions of their past enemies against them but Ant-Man (Scott Lang) foiled his scheme by destroying the device needed to create the black hole. In the end, Uatu disciplined his nephew by dissipating his energy and using it to revive the leader of the Watchers known as the One. Uatu was stripped of his title and exiled by the Watchers for these controversial actions.[24]

Continue Observation[]

Despite his expulsion, Uatu continued to observe affairs on Earth compelled by the lives and struggles of its inhabitants. Eventually reinstated into the Watchers, Uatu witnessed the temporary demise of Galactus who was destroyed by an intergalactic alliance of heroes led by the Silver Surfer near the Shi'ar homeworld. Soon after, Uatu was viciously attacked by Abraxas, a cosmic entity threatening all of reality, but Abraxas was defeated by the Fantastic Four.[66][67]

Cosmic Claims Court[]

Some time ago, Uatu and two of his fellow Watchers, Zoma and Qyre, appeared before She-Hulk who was then serving with the Magistrati as a presiding judge in the Living Tribunal's Cosmic Claims Court. Qyre had discovered a reclusive race who had kept their existence secret since time immemorial. The reclusive race sued the Watchers in the Cosmic Claims Court and She-Hulk ruled that Qyre's mouth be permanently sealed so that he could not share his knowledge of the plaintiffs with his fellow Watchers.[68]

The Dreaming Celestial[]

When the Dreaming Celestial awoke from his slumber in the Diablo Mountains, Uatu, who sensed his presence, turned and looked away from Earth. The Celestial later scanned Uatu and learned the Watcher had broken his pact of non-interference almost 400 times.[69]

Civil War & Secret Invasion[]

Uatu the Watcher appeared before the costumed heroes while they were meeting to discuss what to do after the Stamford disaster. As Watchers only show up personally to monitor key events in history, his presence did not bode well for the costumed heroes according to Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange.[70] Uatu also showed up at the battle in Central Park in New York City between the Skrull invaders and the combined forces of the super hero and villain community after the Skrulls' invasion was discovered.[71]

The Hood & Avengers vs. X-Men[]

Later, he witnessed the search of The Hood for the Infinity Gems, Robbins was surprised by his appearance, and Red Hulk took advantage, hitting him and taking the Power Gem. Also, Uatu was present during Hood's and Professor X's mind battle. He later returned during the Avengers vs X-men event and was talking about the dragon Shou-Lao on how it battled the Phoenix Force. He was also there when Hope Summers punched Cyclops to the moon which he even stated was impossible.[72]

Nova[]

During one of Sam Alexander's training practices Uatu revealed to him an incoming Chitauri armada. After Nova defeated this fleet with the Ultimate Nullifier he returned to Uatu saying that he was the only to believe in him and that he thinks the Ultimate Nullifier should stay with him. He also states he will be coming to Uatu more in the future for further assistance to which Uatu smiles.[73] Uatu has helped Sam many times since the Chitauri armada. He even showed Sam where he could find the Phoenix Force that was making its way towards Earth.[74]

Original Sin[]

After a session with Nova,[18] Uatu's citadel was attacked by Doctor Midas, the Exterminatrix, the Orb, and the Mindless Ones. As Uatu fought the Mindless Ones, the Exterminatrix and Midas robbed the Watcher's armory. The Orb envied Uatu's power and shot him. The blast didn't kill Uatu, but as he was unconscious, the Orb removed one of his eyes. Nick Fury went to investigate the event and found Uatu recovering from the attack.[75]

Fury demanded to know who the culprits were, but Uatu refused to tell him under his oath. After realizing the Watcher's eyes were where the things he had witnessed were saved, and that the only way for him to stop the criminals before they could do anything was to have one of the eyes, to have their identities revealed to him, Fury killed the Watcher and took the remaining eye.[76] The Watcher's corpse was found on the Moon by Thor. This event promptly led to the start of an investigation into who killed him.[3] At the end of the crisis, Fury was punished by the Council of Watchers for Uatu's murder. They imbued him with the remaining of Uatu's power, turning him into the Unseen. Bound to the Moon, the Unseen was forced to carry on Uatu's task of observing the Earth.[76]

The First War[]

Following the attempt of the plant-like alien race called the Cotati to take over the universe, their advanced and mysterious weapons were confiscated by the Avengers and the Fantastic Four and analysed during a rendezvous on the Moon. With the Elder of the Universe the Profiteer failing to recognize their origin, despite her ample knowledge, the weapons were left behind. When the Unseen collected the weapons to study them himself, a reaction caused Uatu to fully manifest himself and emerge from Fury's eye.[4] Seeing his home in ruins, Uatu used his cosmic powers to restore it. He then captured the now powerless Fury, entering his mind. As he was back amongst the living, the Watcher proceeded with his eternal duty, observing every every single moment Fury was forced to watch in Uatu's absence, noting that his reluctant successor also had a habit of interfering. Uatu catched up to all the events he missed, from his murder by Fury's hand all the way to his return. Recognizing that the weapons were Watcher technology, Uatu set out to prepare for an oncoming conflict, the return of "the first war", and enlisted Fury to act as his operative.[77]

Fury spied on those responsible for providing the Cotati the weapons, a renegade group of Prosilicans called the Reckoning who had been providing Watcher technology to other hostile alien races so they could wage war across the universe. After Fury told Uatu what he discovered, the Moon was destroyed by the Badoon in an attempt to prevent Uatu from responding.[10]

Uatu survived and teleported to the Watchers' home planet of Planet T-37X where he summoned all the Watchers to an emergency meeting in order to discuss if the Watchers should stop the Reckoning.[78] Uatu tried to convince his fellow Watchers to act against the Reckoning, but his father Ikor spoke for the Watcher tribunal and the other Watchers, bluntly telling Uatu that the Watchers wouldn't interfere so they didn't repeat the mistakes they made with the Prosilicans. Ikor then had Uatu imprisoned so he couldn't intervene.[79]

Powers

The Watcher possesses vast mental, physical, and energy-manipulating powers:

  • Telepathy: The Watcher is telepathic, able to read the minds of virtually every known form of sentient life and to project his thoughts into any mind.
    • Invisibility (Telepathic): The Watcher may render himself and others effectively invisible and completely undetectable (by the normal senses) to others' minds.
  • Illusion Generation: The Watcher can alter his appearance at will assuming any guise he chooses. This is apparently a mental/psionic capacity not a physical shape-shifting ability like that of the alien Skrulls.[citation needed]
  • Energy Manipulation: Uatu can manipulate cosmic energy, compared to divine levels. He has cosmic energy so powerful that it can almost rival Galactus.[24]
  • Teleportation: The Watcher can convert his body into a form of energy in order to "teleport" through space at hyper-light speeds (It is likely that he traverses warp space to do so).[80]
  • Time Travel: Uatu can travel through time. He can take himself and others to any time, past or future.[43]
  • Force Field Generation: The Watcher can generate and manipulate Force Fields constructed of Cosmic Energy for a variety of effects:
    • Containment: The Watcher can project Force Fields around opponents, containing them and preventing their use of physical and energy powers.[citation needed]
  • Flight: Uatu can fly using psionic energies. He may also fly into hyperspace.[citation needed]
  • Cosmic Conscience: Uatu has very sharp cosmic senses.[citation needed]
  • Immortality: Watchers are seemingly immortal (although degrees of maturity are evident), having bolstered the limits of their life forces with "delta-rays." Presumably, an explosion that dispersed all of his bodily molecules across thousands of miles would prove fatal.[81]
  • Size Alteration: Uatu was able to assume human proportion.[82]

The Watcher holds power at least equal to that of the Collector (as the latter claimed that Uatu could stop his collecting if he so desired) and superior to that of the Silver Surfer at his original cosmic power levels (for he believed even his power was lesser to any of the Elders of the Universe). A Watcher is also described as possessing the power to shatter worlds and set galaxies shaking. Eon claims the Watchers are "vastly powerful" and "near-omniscient."

Uatu was said to be the "most powerful being in the galaxy."[83] The Watchers were said capable of making their very errant wishes reality -- Watchers can die simply by choosing to, yet are still capable of coming back to life by choosing not to be dead anymore.[84] Uatu has been proven able to block the telepathic probes of Galactus.[citation needed] Uatu is also believed to possess unbelievable immunity to physical damage, as even a weakened Uatu proved more than capable of withstanding the combined force of the full-force strikes of the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and a blast from a molecular disruptor designed by Doctor Doom himself.[citation needed]

Uatu (Earth-616) from Creatures on the Loose Vol 1 29 001

Marvel Value Stamp #37

  • The Dreaming Celestial scanned Uatu and learned the Watcher had broken his pact of non-interference 337 times, initially choosing to inform the Fulcrum of this, but later changing to understand humanity and Uatu's love for such lesser beings.[87]
  • The Watcher was one of the characters featured in Series A of the Marvel Value Stamps issued in the 1970s.

Trivia

  • Due to Uatu's tendency to interfere, his friend Blue Marvel came to jokingly nickname him "the Doer" behind his back, despite knowing Uatu's power could make him aware of that fact. Despite the nickname's teasing purpose, it made Uatu smile.[88]
  • Once, Uatu refused to take a piece of stone from Lockjaw's skin flap, stating that he was "forbidden to interfere."[89] This later turned out to be a correct judgment, as otherwise the Thing would've been severely hurt or even killed.
  • Out of all the possible What if? scenarios, Uatu purposely avoided watching one: What if he had not interfered the day Galactus came to Earth? Uatu's father, Ikor, forced him to watch it, and Uatu learned that the Fantastic Four would have defeated Galactus anyway.[7] Ikor claimed Uatu was wrong to interfere, but then it was revealed that after defeating Galactus, Reed Richards attempted to tame the zero energy, only to fail and destroy the universe.[90]
  • The Watcher needs special permission to watch the Living Tribunal.[16]
