Thomas Sorenson was a university student before being used by Genetech for their research in creating superhuman beings. Given the name and powers of Mathemanic, he participated as a member of Psionex during its early activities, such as battling with the young heroes of the New Warriors. Mathemaniac stayed with the team when they escaped Genetech, but ditched his team to join the battle when Furmintz became Terrax, fighting alongside the New Warriors.

Mathemanic has a rather laid-back and arrogant attitude about everything and everyone. He does not hesitate to attack someone, but he attacks them with a telepathic burst of mathematical information. He is not a very good physical fighter. He is fascinated and awed by abstract mathematical facts and theories.

Mathemanic is a genius mathematician who now has telepathic powers. He psionically attacks by projecting abstract mathematical information into his victim's brain, overwhelming him or her by the information. Mathemanic also has developed the ability to realize his mathematical concepts, giving him power over the fundemental forces of the universe. For example, he once realized an increased effect of gravity on the hero Nova and tried to slow the villain Terrax by actualizing a formula that would slow down the functions of the alien's brain.
