I've only seen Mandarin have a force-field in one appearance, and he used the rings through that force-field with no problem.

The only time he's been able to take over the mind of someone who wears the rings is when he was dead and his soul was inside them. The article makes it seem like a far less situational ability. Indeed, he had to bargain with his son to get his rings back, implying he had no particular ability to simply make them come to himself.
