History

On Earth-77105, Captain America and Bucky would survive their final wartime encounter with Baron Zemo and continue their exploits through the remainder of the war and remain active through the 1950's and 60's.

S.H.I.E.L.D. was be formed by President Lyndon Johnson in order to combat the terrorist organization Hydra, and he asked Captain America to lead it the organization. By this time, Captain America had been fighting crime by himself following the retirement of his partner Bucky (now calling himself Buck), and had declined the position and suggested that Buck take the top position in his stead. Buck accepted the job and was soon leading S.H.I.E.L.D. against the forces of Hydra. During one battle with Hydra, Buck saw something familiar in the Supreme Hydra's eyes, and he was frustrated as the leader slipped away yet again.

Several years later, following a unsuccessful clash with the Hulk, Steve Rogers was convinced by Buck to give up his role as Captain America due to his age, and he agreed to switch roles with Buck. As Buck became Captain America (with his new partner Rick Jones becoming the new Bucky), Steve took over leadership roles of SHIELD.

Steve later led a S.H.I.E.L.D. mission to Hydra's island stronghold. After finishing the initial group of Hydra agents outside their volcano base, Steve called in Captain America for back-up. Steve used a Stark anti-sonic gun that silently blasted open the door, and then he, Sharon Carter, and Captain America overpowered a trio of Hydra agents, took their uniforms, and infiltrated the base. However, Sharon was discovered as no women were allowed on Hydra base. The trio battled back the Hydra forces, but when Steve tried to grab the Supreme Hydra's new life-draining weapon, he activated its booby trap, and a burst of electricity subdued the three heroes. They were bound and then confronted by the Supreme Hydra, whom Steve quickly recognized and identified as Zemo. Steve, still enhanced by the super-soldier serum even at age 50, broke free and punched Zemo. Zemo turned and his hand weapon at Captain America and fired, blasting him, though Buck pretended Zemo had missed and encouraged Steve to stop Zemo once and for all. Zemo, finally recognizing Steve's face, fled after taking another punch and when Steve hurled his old shield at him, Zemo fearfully buckled, and the shield struck Zemo's machinery (which maintained the inert volcano's artificial magma to keep out intruders by making them think it was still active), and Zemo's body was buried by a sea of molten rock.

After S.H.I.E.L.D. had overpowered Hydra and retreated into another room, which they had sealed from the magma, Buck revealed that he had been mortally wounded and died noting that he just wasn't as fast or strong as Steve, and also that he knew now that there was only one Captain America. Steve later returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. while the Captain America costume was retired and placed in a museum. Steve was later met by Rick, who told him that he was outgrowing his Bucky costume and asked if he could become the new Captain America, continuing his training and hoping that S.H.I.E.L.D. would one day rediscover the super-soldier formula.[1]

With the threat of Hydra ended SHIELD's current activities remain unrevealed, however they likely continue to defend American interests from terrorist threats.

Notes

Nick Fury would not be selected as director of SHIELD in this reality because he was killed in action during the Korean War.
