Synopsis for "Castles in the Air"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Spectacular Spider-Man #198
(originally printed as Castles in the Air!)

Professor Power has just defeated Spider-Man and the X-Men. The police have just arrived on the scene and attempt to gun down Power. Unfortunately, the bullets bounce off Professor Power harmlessly, he then blasts the officers away. Meanwhile, Richard and Mary Parker have left the scene of the battle.[Continuity 1] Mary is worried about their son's safety, but Richard reminds her that their son is a full grown adult and a crime photographer, and they should trust his ability to keep himself safe. Back at the scene of the battle, Professor Power continues to hold off the police until his massive flying castle arrives on the scene. When his Centurions arrive on the scene, Professor Power tells them to only take the mutants, saying Spider-Man was just a brave warrior whom he has no quarrel with.[Continuity 2]

When the members of the X-Men recover, they find themselves trapped in an energy cube within Power's castle. When Cyclops tries to blast through it with his optic blasts, but they are deflected back at the X-Men. That's when a holographic image of Professor Power appears before them. Power tells the X-Men that he is taking them back to Westchester where they will be forced to witness the destruction of Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. He also intends to take Xavier prisoner and make him watch him kill all of his original students, one by one. The whole point is to make Xavier watch the death of his children, as he watched the death of his own son. Growing emotional, Power turns off the projection and looks at himself in a nearby mirror. Instead of seeing his current form, he only sees his original, withered body. He thinks about how he was recently defeated at the hands of the US Agent, and forced back into his original body and his son's body buried.[Continuity 3] Then, when his original body was destroyed, a failsafe transferred his mind back into Matthew's body.[Continuity 4] There he waited until technicians dug up his son's body and repaired the cybernetics. Furious at what has happened to his son's corpse, Professor Power punches the mirror, shattering it.

Hearing a crash, one of the Centurions enters the room to check on his master. Furious at being interrupted, Professor Power orders him back to his post. The Centurion complies, however, there is more to this guard than there appears to be. Going to the room where the prisoners are being kept, this soldier makes the two guards suddenly pass out. This guard is ambushed from behind by Spider-Man, but he quickly learns that it is really Jean Grey in disguise thanks to an image-inducer. Both had come to rescue the other X-Men, and as they try to figure out how to get Cyclops and the others to get free, the alarm goes off. With an army of Centurions storming into the room, Spider-Man holds them at bay while Jean uses her telepathic powers to free her teammates. Ultimately, Spider-Man defeats all the soldiers while Jean frees her friends. That's when Professor Power enters the room. He is furious that Professor X refused to save his son and demands that someone pays for Matthew's death. Spider-Man tries to relate to Professor Power, as he knows what it is like to lose someone you love. He then tries to convince Power to let go of his hate, as it is the only way to move on with his life. It works, briefly, as Power pulls back and blasts Spider-Man aside.

That's when the X-Men ambush Professor Power, although the combined powers of Cyclops, Archangel, Iceman, and the Beast stagger the foe, it is Jean Grey's mental powers that win the day. She forces Power to face the reality that he been using Xavier as a scapegoat, and how his son bravely sacrificed his life in order to earn the love of his father. Forced to confront the reality of the situation, Professor Power falls into a catatonic state. Although Spider-Man and the X-Men are victors, they soon realize, to their horror that it was Professor Power who was keeping his flying castle afloat. With Power catatonic, the castle begins to plumet from the sky.

Synopsis for "Nothing Ventured"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Spider-Man 2099 #2
(originally printed as Nothing Ventured...)

Back at his apartment, Miguel O'Hara continues the story of his strange transformation for his holographic digital assistant, Lyla. Though he had been changed, he was so numbed by the experience that it hadn't quite registered. He stared at his hands, his vision to out-of-whack to see them for the claws they had become. There was a buzzing in his ear, which he still couldn't quite make out as the voice of Aaron Delgato. (Unbeknownst to Miguel, the older, higher-ranking Aaron had just sabotaged the genetic template process Miguel had just undergone in an effort to do away with the young upstart.) Fearing for his life, Delgato pulls a gun on the now monstrous scientist, but Miguel manages to leap effortlessly away from the blasts. Miguel is barely able to recover his ability to speak before a stray blast hits a large canister labeled "DANGER". The resulting explosion punches a large hole through the Alchemax building, and sends the two men flying.

Miguel manages to catch Aaron by his arm, holding him stories above New York. Miguel holds as tight as he can, but Aaron resists, claiming the skin is being flayed from his arm. Finally freeing himself, Aaron Delgato falls to his death. Confused and horrified, Miguel finally notices that each finger is tipped in a razor-sharp talon. "Talons... Heightened vision... leaping like a spider...Dear Lord... the spider program... I'm a freak!" This startling realization is interrupted by a heavily armed squad of Public Eye security agents, who have Miguel (with his face covered) in their spotlights. Preferring death to being a freak, Miguel leaps from the building just before the agents open fire. As he falls Miguel just hopes to die -- for all of three seconds.

"What am I, nuts?!" Miguel screams for help, grasping at the building's smooth metal facade. Miguel manages to dig in his claws, slowing himself, and finally comes to a stop when talons on his toes dig in as well. Resolving not to look down, he begins a slow descent.

As more Public Eye and Fire Control arrive on the scene, Miguel looks on from a nearby rooftop. Aaron's bumbling attempt at homicide has left Miguel a monster, and now he doesn't have the guts to finish the job either. With "Public Eyeballs" crawling everywhere, there's no chance for escape. Or so it would seem until he hears a strange voice from above.

"Repent! Repent all of you! Repent Tyrants of Alchemax!" yells a man dressed as Thor from his personal glider. The man is a Thorite, a devotee of the Church of Thor, heralding a new day when Thor will return to "smite the Frost Giants of industry". Miguel calls after him, and leaps for the so-called "sky-kite", trying not to rip it to shreds. When the Thorite demands to know who he is, Miguel replies, "Easter Bunny. Santa Claus. Spider-Man. Take your pick." The name Spider-Man strikes home for the Thorite. Surely the return of one of Thor's legendary allies proves his own return is nigh! The two crash the kite into the ground below. Miguel is sorry about the ruined sky-kite, but the Thorite encourages him to take the torn fabric to fashion a mask. ("Spider-Man must be masked!")

In his office, Tyler Stone takes a tense call with Tiger Wylde, ruler of Latveria.[Continuity 5] Wylde shows stone what remains of his "assassin", stating that Alchemax must have declined sorely after he left the Corporate Raider program. Stone disavows any knowledge of an assignation, but Wylde just cuts him off. Enraged, Stone demands to see Dr. Crane and Venture, but his secretary informs him that Venture is already in the building, inspecting the damage site.

Down in the lab, the Elite agent known as Venture surveys the damage. His cybernetic eye can still pick up the thermal imprints left by Aaron Delgato and Miguel O'Hara, from their footprints to full body-shaped imprints where the men hit the floor. Venture's presence visibly shakes the investigators from Public Eye. When one whispers to his comrade that the Elite gives him the creeps, he is hushed. "Quiet! I bet he can hear you no matter how you whisper!"

"You'd win your bet." On that note, Venture departs. Back in his office, Tyler Stone vents his frustration on Dr. Crane. The doctor is flabbergasted at the mission's failure, insisting that the body armor he designed was impenetrable. Stone angrily informs the doctor that the armor's occupant was not so fortunate, and warns him that his future intelligence work with Alchemax had better be an improvement over this fiasco. Venture enters the office to deliver his report. Ejecting a small silver disk from a slot in his head (where his left ear used to be), and loading it on to Stone's big screen console, Venture demonstrates how the mystery target fell to his belly while Delgato hung over the edge. Once Delgato has fallen and Public Eye intrudes, the mystery man vaults out of the gaping hole in the laboratory wall, then climbs up the building. Whoever he is, Stone considers the mystery man well worth pursuing. Stone puts Venture in charge of tracking him down, considering the job to be above Public Eye.

Back in his Babylon Towers apartment, Miguel awakens. He is shocked to find the previous night was not a dream, and that his spider claws have torn his sheets to shreds. He orders his digital assistant Lyla to darken the room, as his eyes are now to light-sensitive to endure sunlight. At that moment, Gabriel O'Hara again calls to check in on his big brother. Gabe had by now spoken with a very shaken Dana D'Angelo, and insists on coming over. "Terrific." With Gabe on his way, Miguel begins to consider how expensive it will be to replace his wardrobe with unstable molecule fabric. With his new claws, any other material may be torn to shreds with a careless gesture. As it is, the only UMF outfit he has is an old Day of the Dead "death's head" body suit that he used to wear to the festivals. The only good news seems to be that his claws reflexively retract to avoid damaging Miguel's skin; with any luck, Miguel may learn to control his claws deliberately.

Gabe O'Hara soon arrives, and immediately tries to interrogate Miguel about Alchemax, Dana, and the Rapture to which he's now addicted. Miguel insists he's beaten the Rapture, but Gabe knows that it bonds to DNA, and no one beats it. Gabe can appreciate that he feels a certain degree of loyalty to Alchemax - they discovered him, educated him, shot him up through the corporate ranks and gave him free rein -- but he can't turn a blind eye to all the evil that they do forever. Miguel's eyes are sharper than Gabe thinks, however, especially after the accident. From his mile-high apartment, Miguel is able to recognize a figure at street level as Venture, a psionically-enhanced heat tracker and cyborg Elite, whom he recognizes from old files and his horrific reputation. Venture had managed to follow Miguel's heat trail from the crashed thorite glider all the way back to his apartment and will arrive in moments.

Miguel quickly shoves his brother out the door. Venture is tracking the spider-man who escaped from the lab, not Miguel O'Hara, who wasn't even supposed to be in the lab that night. With Venture's ability to track by heat signatures, the only way to save the latter is to somehow give up the former. Thinking quickly, Miguel attaches the partially-shredded airfoil from the thorite glider to his UMF death's head costume. Bursting out of the window, Miguel falls for stories before the foil finally catches an updraft, sending him crashing into Venture on the street below. With venture knocked down and flat-footed, Miguel tries to find something to say that will shake the seasoned combatant, something that doesn't reveal how terrified Miguel is.

Synopsis for "Hydra and Go Seek"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Untold Tales of Spider-Man #-1
(originally printed as There's a Man who Leads a Life of Danger!)

Addressing the reader, Stan Lee tells the reader that the following story is not about Peter Parker, but about his parents back before he was born.[Continuity 6]

A luxurious yacht, the Scheherazade, is moored off the coast of the French Riviera. In the dead of night, a masked figure sneaks aboard, and witnesses Baroness Adelicia von Krupp, a wealthy widow, up to no good. He spies on the noblewoman as she is informed that her associates in India have captured an agent of the CIA who goes by "Agent Ten". Shortly after hearing this, the masked intruder is found out by the ship's crew and manages to escape, but not before sustaining a gunshot wound to the arm. Jumping in the bay, the man in the mask is saved by a scuba diver who is likewise concealed. The two figures surface on a nearby beach, revealing themselves as agents Richard and Mary Parker. As Mary tends to Richard's wound, the yacht explodes, and a helicopter is seen leaving the scene. The two spies retreat to report to their superiors.

At France's US embassy, the Parkers inform the ambassador that they had spotted the Baroness with Guenter Schmidt, a known terrorist, at the Imperial Casino. Expecting trouble, Richard had tailed them to the Scheherazade in hopes of getting information on Schmidt, but now they've been dragged into something bigger after hearing of the capture of Agent Ten. The ambassador tells them that Agent Ten is an operative for a friendly power, and is currently working with the CIA in India. As of the briefing, he has been missing for four days. The Parkers are outfitted for their mission, and while doing so, Richard reminisces about how he met Mary, from his service in the armed forces to his being selected for CIA work by Colonel Nick Fury. Mary, meanwhile, remembers her father, who had raised her alone after her mother passed when she was young. The duo prepares for the worst as their plane arrives in Mumbai.[Continuity 7]

Richard and Mary spend two days scoping out the city until they finally spot Baroness von Krupp. However, their luck seems to run out as it is Ganesh Jayanti, a Hindu festival, and the streets are packed with people. Amidst the parades and celebrations, the two agents manage to locate the Baroness' hiding spot and incapacitate two thugs with a spy camera booby-trapped with knockout gas. They successfully infiltrate the base only to be captured and put to sleep by the Baroness.

Coming to their senses, the Parkers find that the Baroness is in league with Wolfgang von Strucker and that he has been torturing and interrogating a prisoner. After a week of torture, he has only revealed his name to be Logan. Strucker reveals that Logan is in fact Agent Ten, and perceives him to be of an incredibly strong constitution. As Strucker begins interrogating the Americans, a distraction from Mary provides Logan an opportunity to break free of his bonds. The three captives handily escape the hideout after an accidental gun discharge ignites sensitive equipment and the entire building goes up in flames. The heroes get out unscathed, as do Strucker and Baroness von Krupp. Strucker makes it known that as long as they both are alive, it is their enemies, and not them, who have failed.

Back in the safety of the embassy, Logan thanks Richard for saving him, and congratulates him when they both hear the news that Mary is one month pregnant.[Continuity 8] Overcome with joy, Richard asks Mary if she thinks they will have a son or a daughter. She replies that she's been quite lucky with men in her life, so she's betting on a boy. Richard assures her that, with the two of them as parents, their son is sure to be amazing.
