National Air and Space Museum

The Smithsonian Institution, established in 1846 "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge," is a group of museums and research centers administered by the United States government. The institution Nineteen museums and galleries, as well as the National Zoological Park, comprise the Smithsonian museums. Eleven are on the National Mall, the park that runs between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol Building. Other museums are located elsewhere in Washington, D.C., with two more in New York City and one in Chantilly, Virginia.

National Air and Space Museum[]

The National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian's largest in terms of floor space, opened in June 1976. The museum contains the Apollo 11 command module, and Lunar Module 2, the Friendship 7 capsule which was flown by John Glenn, Charles Lindbergh's The Spirit of St. Louis, the Bell X-1 which broke the sound barrier, the North American X-15 the first near orbital aircraft and the Wright brothers plane near the entrance.[1]

It also has a tribute to the Space Shuttle Challenger honoring the crew.[1]

Captain America Exhibition[]

Replica shields

The museum also contains an exhibition honoring the life of Captain America. The exhibit; comprised by several panels and areas about actions during World War II. There are statues of Cap and Bucky battling the Red Skull, a single statue honoring Bucky and replicas of the various versions of Captain America's Shield..[1]

The exhibition also has displays of the later Captain Americas who operated during the Cold War. This included a statue of Captain America II battling an enemy, a Daily Bugle showing Captain America III battling the mob, and Captain America IV battling a soviet villain.[1]

Smithsonian National Design Museum[]

On display in the Smithsonian

A duplicate of the Spider-Mobile was on display at the Smithsonian National Design Museum, which surprised Peter Parker when he was walking down the exhibit with Norah Winters.[2]

Events[]

Hydra claimed to have turned the Smithsonian Museum into a gigantic deathtrap, but the terrorists were all eventually defeated by Captain America.[3]

Jane Framan was an employee of the Smithsonian Institution in 1939.[4]

Cap later borrowed the replica of his original Triangular Shield from the Smithsonian Institution.[3]

Logan visited the Captain America Exhibition when he reminisced about his times battling with Cap during World War II.[5]

At a gala in the Smithsonian, Sharon Carter was approached by an agitated man that identifies himself as Geraldo Lucky, who Carter identifies as an international arms and drug dealer. Lucky confesses he had mistakenly made a deal with Lucia von Bardas, placing her back in charge of Latveria. Geraldo suddenly collapses, and a green liquid started to pour from his mouth and eyes. After encouraging the attendants to evacuate, she approached him to demand what did von Bardas want him to tell her. He proclaims, "I guess... this" and an explosion ensued.[6]
