Emperor Sunfire maintained a delicate balance in dealing with the House of M. He assisted fellow rulers Storm and the Black Panther when they asked for his help.

However, his regime was involved in Project: Genesis, illegally conducting experiments on humans--attempting to give them superhuman powers, though Sunfire claimed that the project's goal was to transform organic waste into food for the poor. Mariko Yoshida was kidnapped and her safety was used as a bargaining chip over the revealing of these experiments. This plot was exposed by the Hellions, a a junior Red Guard team consisting of young mutants.
