History
Formed by Nick Fury of Earth-1610, SHIELD was tasked with fighting threats from beyond the pruview of the other agencies of the American government - superhumans, alien tech, and other strange goings-on. When the Icarus One lunar mission brought back a mysterious object which began mutating people, Fury saw his chance. Since the Squadron Supreme's mysterious absence, Fury deputised all the superhumans he could find as agents of SHIELD and formed a new version of the Squadron. SHIELD first came into conflict with the Squadron that was gathered by Hyperion in Washington, D.C. Thereafter, SHIELD became involved to stop a group of superhuman terrorists from the Middle East following an attack in New York City, but through a government device, SHIELD's superhuman agents lose their abilities.
