At a young age, Anna Marie was cursed not to ever touch another person, unless she wanted her mutant power of skin-to-skin absorption of a person's essence, personality, and, in some cases, powers to affect those around her. For fear of her loved ones' safety, Anna Marie ran away and was found by the mutant terrorist Mystique, who had her join the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Acting on Mystique's orders, Rogue attacked Carol Danvers and permanently absorbed her powers of tough skin, superhuman strength, and flight and used those powers to attack the Avengers and X-Men. Rogue fought alongside the Brotherhood against ROM and made a arch-nemesis of Dazzler, who Rogue was jealous of her popular and attractive lifestyle. After being unable to control the mental personality of Carol, Rogue fled from Mystique to Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men and joined them, where she has been fighting for the peaceful coexistence of mutants and humans most of her life. Rogue had many adventures with the X-Men, including being captured by the Genoshian Magistrates and molested, and gained her teammates respect, including Dazzler who later joined the team. After attempting to save Dazzler from the Master Mold Sentinel, Rogue entered the Siege Perilous and exited stripped of her powers in the Savage Land. After toying with romance with the mutant terrorist Magneto, Rogue eventually abandoned him, after he killed Zaladane. After regaining her powers, Rogue rejoined the X-Men and began a romance with Gambit. When the Galactic Council transformed Earth into a maximum-security penal colony for hundreds of extraterrestrial criminals, Rogue absorbed the attributes of Z'Cann and her powers were mutated and later Sage jumpstarted her powers, to the point where she could use all of the combined powers she had collected. After loosing her powers, Rogue and Gambit explored the physical aspect of their relationship, before returning to Storm's X-Treme X-Men and later the X-Men. After being touched by the first mutant born after M-Day, Rogue was left with none of the psyches in her mind and Professor Xavier finally helped her to control her power, to the point where she is able to turn it on and off.
