Robert Paine was a former spy who later adopted the superheroic persona of the Black Fox to fight crime. Initially his crimefighting persona was a light-hearted swashbuckling one, and during this time he became a member of the superhero team the First Line. He fought various menaces alongside the team, until he decided to retire and marry his fiancée Miriam after one last case. During that case, however, Miriam was killed by the vampiric criminal Nocturne and Black Fox continued to fight crime, adopting a harder-edged persona to do so.
Black Fox continued to serve as a member of the First Line, remaining with them after they severed their links with the U.S. government and began to act independently. However, when the team went on to a mission to Halwan where they were used as decoys and one of their members Blackjack was killed, Black Fox left the team and retired in disgust.
Paine became a professor of law and history, and one of his students was Truth MacRae, the daughter of his former crimefighting rival Cap'n Hip. Truth became enamored with Paine, and guessed his identity, and began committing minor crimes to get his attention as the costumed Gadfly.
When the Skrulls attempted to invade Earth, Black Fox and Gadfly joined the First Line and a number of other heroes and villains to oppose them. Taking the fight to the Skrull fleet above Earth, Black Fox was badly injured and was found by Gadfly. The two revealed their identities and their feelings to each other and kissed. However, some Skrull warriors happened upon them and killed them both, mocking their sentimentality as they did so.
