Quote1 Once I remove your spine you'll be a perfect match for Mojo! Quote2
Spiral[src]

Spiral is a six-armed sorceress forced to serve her hated creator and master, the vile Mojo, in his twisted mediatic empire in the Mojoworld.[3] Originally the stunt actress Ricochet Rita, she was an ally to Longshot, a rebel who resisted Mojo's rule.[4] However, Mojo transformed Rita into the revolting Spiral to torment her and Longshot, forever trapping her in a paradoxical existence in which she would dance across time and be responsible, alongside Longshot, for her own transformation into an dehumanized creature.[5] For years, Spiral's hatred for Longshot led her to manipulate and harm him and his allies, the X-Men.[6][7][8]

Spiral's inevitable and cyclic fate was once broken when Mojo unexplainably got tired of her and banished her to Earth. Having her powers diminished and becoming a drug dealer in Los Angeles, she developed a bond with an orphaned mutant kid named Ginny. Initially intercepted by X-Force,[9] Spiral eventually made it to their ranks[10] making amends with some of her former enemies[11] to destroy the Owl Queen, who had threatened her protégé.[12]

Under unrevealed circumstances, Spiral became attached to the Mojoworld once again, restarting her condition of servitude and despise for her handler.[13] With Mojo no longer in charge of the Mojoworld, a free Spiral started her own broadcast show, Spiral's Showcase.[14]

History

Early Life[]

"Ricochet Rita" Wayword was once a professional stuntwoman. She befriended Longshot, an interdimensional traveler from the Mojoverse, when he first appeared on Earth-616.[4]

Temporal Paradox[]

The story of how Rita became Spiral, however, was a temporal paradox. Rita was attacked by a mutated version of herself called "Spiral" from the future. This led to her meeting Longshot and falling in love with him. When Longshot sought to return to his home dimension, the Mojoverse, the love-struck Rita went with her boyfriend, only to watch Longshot fail and be captured alongside him by the dimension's evil overlord, Mojo. Longshot was promptly mindwiped to forget all about Rita, while a much worse fate was left for Rita herself.[15][1]

After holding her prisoner for several years (at which point Rita was made to serve as guardian for Mojo's army of "X-Babies"), Mojo forced his chief scientist, Arize, to perform extreme physical and mental body modifications onto Rita to recreate her into a loyal subordinate. These experiments left her with six arms (some of which are robotic), turned her hair gray, and drove the young woman insane through forcibly evolving Rita's mind to the point that she could see into other dimensions that were used for time travel/teleportation. He also trained her in the dark arts of magic and body modification, so that she could use these skills to mutilate others like Mojo had mutilated her. Finally, in a cruel act of manipulation, Mojo sent Spiral back in time to set into motion the events that led to her former self-becoming Mojo's prisoner and become Spiral by attacking her past self.[16]

Spiral[]

Now trapped in the the past, Spiral found herself stranded on Earth by Mojo for failing to kill Longshot and Rita. At some unknown point, Spiral encountered Val Cooper and was recruited into Freedom Force, a revamped version of the second Brotherhood of Mutants.[17] Despite being utterly insane and more blood-thirsty than her new teammates, Spiral quickly became a valuable member of the team, single-handedly defeating the X-Men on several occasions as well as kidnapping the X-Man Rachel Summers for Mojo. She was also instrumental in Freedom Force's victory over the Avengers and the West Coast Avengers when sent by the U.S. government to arrest the heroes. Her magical powers temporarily robbed Captain Marvel of her energy powers and she also defeated Iron Man, removing two of the most powerful Avengers from the battle.[18]

She also ran the "Body Shoppe", which sells alien cybernetic parts to amputees and others who seek the power of cybernetic limbs. Lady Deathstrike and several members of the Reavers were some of her earlier clients though later writers have retconned Donald Pierce and not Spiral as the person responsible for their becoming cyborgs.[19] She also was responsible for giving Psylocke cybernetic eyes, which doubled as cameras for Mojo to spy on the X-Men.[20]

Along with Mojo, Spiral played a role in Psylocke becoming Asian.[21] Originally, it was believed that the two literally transformed Psylocke from being British to being Asian, but it was discovered that Spiral (without Mojo's involvement) transferred the X-Man's mind into the body of the Asian assassin Kwannon.[22]

Even though she was a loyal servant of Mojo, Spiral deeply resented Mojo's crass manners and cruelty towards her. In particular, Spiral has been known to go against Mojo's orders and attack Longshot out of the psychotic need for revenge for his seduction on her and how her love for him led to her transformation into the being she is today. As such, Mojo has been known to leave Spiral stranded on Earth (since Spiral required Mojo's power to travel between dimensions safely).[citation needed]

Spiral was revealed to have conquered an alternate timeline and referred to herself as "The Apocalypse". She managed to kill most of that Earth's heroes, and only Cable and some of his X-Force/New Mutants allies were left. Spiral had kidnapped that universe's Sunspot and tortured him by making him make love to her until his rescue. With the aid of Shatterstar, Spiral was evidently defeated and apparently returned to Mojo's services. She later attacked the X-Men together with Mojo, but ended up defeated once again.[23] Spiral was among the nine criminal geniuses that Beast sought out when it came to reversing the effects of Decimation. Mojo himself was another.[24]

Sisterhood[]

Spiral in the Sisterhood

As usual, Spiral maintained her own affairs parallel to serving Mojo. When repairing Lady Deathstrike at the Body Shoppe, they were recruited by Madelyne Pryor into the Sisterhood of Mutants; Pryor promised to resurrect someone of their choosing in return for their loyalty.[25] Using a combination of magic and telepathy, Spiral carried out experiments for Pryor's resurrection rituals. This involved desecrating Psylocke's burial site, with Spiral stealing he corpse of her original body. The Sisterhood revived her as a brainwashed servant.[26] Their next move was to revive Pryor in Jean Grey's body, leading them to attack the X-Men in their headquarters in San Francisco as a way to collect a beacon that belonged to Wolverine. Pryor, Spiral, Deathstrike and Psylocke incapacitated Nightcrawler and Wolverine for this purpose while the rest of the Sisterhood tortured the X-Men.[27] With Pryor collecting her prize, Spiral gathered her allies and teleporting away.[27] Pryor's plan was a failure since the X-Men tricked her with a bogus corpse of Jean Grey that caused her vanish. Simultaneously, Psylocke overcame her brainwashing. Unprotected and overcrowded, Spiral chose to retreat, rescuing her fellow sisters from the X-Men.[28]

The Great Corruption[]

In his volatility, Mojo was bored by Spiral, displeased by her service. He removed her ability to transport herself across dimensions, before trapping her on Earth. In Los Angeles, she had to fend for herself. Eventually, she met a young mutant telepath named Ginny, who used her psychic abilities for recreational use by others. Spiral saw in Ginny an opportunity for profit, selling her abilities as a pretended drug nicknamed the "TAO". Eventually, Ginny managed to save Spiral's life, and their relation became more solid than a simple exploitation.[11] Their operation caught the attention of Wolverine, who dispatched Psylocke, Storm and Puck to assess the bizarre drug-dealing business. Psylocke attacked Spiral after recognizing her as the dealer in a nightclub, while Storm and Puck intercepted Ginny.[29] Amidst the confusion, Ginny was kidnapped by a tormented Bishop.[30] Spiral teamed up with her adversary to look for her protégée, ultimately finding out Bishop had been corrupted both by the Demon Bear[31] and the Ghost Owl, the Revenant Queen, with the latter possessing Ginny and vanishing in the end. Having lost Ginny, a depressed Spiral surrendered and was kept captive.[11]

Spiral managed to break free when interacting with Puck,[32] only to find that Psylocke had been kidnapped by Cluster. She chose to go for Psylocke's rescue, in an opportunity that made the two women discuss their sorrowful past. Psylocke ultimately decided to forgive Spiral for her aggressions, liberating her to look for Ginny.[33] In her investigation, Spiral found out a corrupted cult was forming in Los Angeles. When tracking down their meetings to the Magic Mansion, she found Ginny as the master of a horde of revenants, or, more specifically, Mummudrai. Moreover, the Revenant Queen revealed herself to be a version of Cassandra Nova. After battling her way out, Spiral contacted Storm, Psylocke, Puck, and Bishop about Nova's plan of casting an invasion of Mummudrai to corrupt the world. As such the group assembled as the new X-Force to oppose her.[34]

The uncanny roster of X-Force witnessed Los Angeles be psychically locked down as part of the corruption. The only way to stop the on-going ritual was through the sacrifice of a telepath. During the confrontation, Cassandra Nova mentally tormented Spiral with her traumas.[35] Simultaneously, X-Force had to protect innocents from the rampaging Revenants.[36] Spiral and Bishop destroyed a giant monster that was the most menacing threat in the invasion. From there, Spiral was able to free Ginny from Cassandra Nova, which allowed Psylocke to murder the villainess. With the death of a telepath, the Great Corruption ritual was undone and the world was freed from the Revenants. Spiral chose to stay with X-Force.[37]

When Bishop went missing after having entered in a battle with his nemesis Hope,[38] X-Force went to his rescue. They clashed with Cable's own team of X-Force, with Spiral kidnapping Cable and removing him from the fight. However, Cable was able to subdue her telepathically, and force her to teleport him to Hope. There, they learned the real mastermind behind the events to be Stryfe.[39] Spiral was unable to win against Stryfe, who used her own abilities to cast her away to a distant location as she emerged on a cargo ship the middle of the ocean. The two X-Force groups joined forces to rescue their teammates, including Spiral. Psylocke was able to remove the mental locks Stryfe had built in Spiral's mind to disrupt her teleportation.[40] By joining their power, the X-Force teams were able to defeat Stryfe. As a last resource, he destabilized Hope's power levels. Spiral suggested putting her down to end the situation, contrary to her teammates' wishes of saving her. Following this adventure, X-Force disbanded.[41]

Spiral's Showcase[]

Under unknown circumstances, Spiral returned to Mojoworld to serve her former master. Along with Mojo and Major Domo, Spiral abducted Gambit and Rogue to force them into performing for Mojo's television programs.[42] Unbeknownst to Mojo, Spiral had made a deal with Gambit that she would save Rogue if he stole a mystical item for her.[43]

While communicating with Rogue telepathically, Spiral was attacked by Mojo's guards. Spiral defended Rogue until Gambit arrived with what he believed to be Spiral's baby.[44] Spiral revealed that the baby was in fact a part of her soul, and that it looked different to anyone who sees it. The soul piece had been removed many years ago by Mojo in order to keep Spiral enslaved. Spiral, with her soul completed, began to leave until she realized that Mojo would easily defeat Gambit and Rogue. Instead, Spiral joined in the battle, and when Rogue absorbed her powers, the trio managed to defeat Mojo. Spiral then teleported Gambit and Rogue back to apartment on Earth.[45]

Powers

  • Spell Casting: Spiral has powerful mystical abilities. With gestures or dance moves, she can teleport herself and numerous people across great distances. Teleportation and her more powerful spells require complicated dance moves. Some of Spiral's spell-casting powers can be triggered through small hand gestures of her many hands. Spiral often incorporates knives and swords into more complicated spells. Spiral can also disguise herself through her magic. With Mojo's aid or specific astral events, Spiral can open gateways between dimensions and travel through time. For a time, her trans-reality powers have been cancelled by Mojo, and she can only teleport on Earth-616 where Mojo dumped her. However, Spiral managed to have her interdimensional powers returned to her, through unknown circumstances.

By using magic, Spiral can:

    • Teleport herself and others
    • Project concussive energies
    • Paralyze others
    • Turn invisible
    • Remove superhuman abilities
    • Cause unconsciousness
    • Conjure up objects
  • Possession Immunity: Spiral's mind seems to be immune from possession. When Rogue attempted to steal Spiral's mind and powers, Spiral collapsed into unconsciousness, but took over Rogue's body instead, laughing that she had danced in many people's souls. This lasted only for a short time, however.[46] Nocturne was fooled by Spiral into thinking Spiral had been possessed while Spiral remained in control.[citation needed]

Spiral is aware, through unknown mystical means, whenever a person speaks her name.[47]

She was considered as a possible Sorcerer Supreme.[48]

Abilities

Spiral is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and sword fighter. Her six arms are fully coordinated, giving her great dexterity and athletic ability. However, Spiral will often lose to less powerful opponents due to tendencies of overconfidence, toying with her foe for too long, or becoming distracted. To cast many, if not all of her spells, Spiral's arms must be free and unhindered and, in some cases, she must be free to dance as well.[citation needed]

Spiral demonstrated highly developed skills in cybernetics and genetic manipulation which she has used to turn humans into powerful cyborgs at her Body Shoppe. Most notable include Lady Deathstrike and the cybernetic Reavers, who have since been "upgraded" by Donald Pierce.[citation needed]

Paraphernalia

Weapons

Swords constructed from unknown metals.[citation needed]
