History
Queens is the largest of the five boroughs of New York City and is located to the north of Brooklyn. It covers roughly 109 square miles of western Long Island and includes a few smaller islands, most of which are in Jamaica Bay and form part of Gateway National Recreation Area.
It is also primarily residential but not without its important manufacturing, distribution and transportation facilities as Queens is home to both John F. Kennedy and La Guardia International Airports. Manufacturers of paints, metals, textiles, and paper products are located here.
Like Brooklyn, the neighborhoods of Queens are diverse and distinct with large Hispanic neighborhoods such as Little Columbia and many African American areas. Other ethnic groups in the groups populating the neighborhoods of Queens include Irish, Italians, Jews, Chinese, and Koreans.
