Upon hearing that Daredevil was killed by the Punisher, Spider-Man, feeling somewhat responsible for not stopping the Punisher before then, immediately set out to bring the Punisher to justice.

Spider-Man soon found the Punisher scoping out a smuggling ring and made his presence known by webbing up the Punisher's gun. The criminals made a run for it and the Punisher managed to escape by leaving his gun webbed to the wall. The next night, Spider-Man once again interrupted the Punisher while he was interrogating a criminal working for Injun Joe by punching him down. Cornering the Punisher, Spider-Man jumped at him only to be shot in the chest, forcing him to leave to get medical attention.

Unfortunately, Spider-Man passed out without making it to the hospital and was found by city locals. Taken to a hospital, Peter's identity was revealed to the public by J. Jonah Jameson in the Daily Bugle and his aunt May was killed as retaliation for stopping the Maggia in the past.

In the hospital, Peter was heavily sedated due to everyone being afraid of him and was visited by Ben Urich, who found it surprising that he and Spider-Man were one and the same. Later, the Kingpin had a crazed Spider-Man released from the hospital and gave him the Punisher's location in hoped that Peter would kill him.

Upon finding the Punisher, the crazed Peter blamed the death of his aunt on him and savagely attacked him. As Mason gave a speech, Spider-Man and the Punisher violently battled one another until Peter managed maim Frank. He then grabbed him and then climbed up a nearby building. He prepared to toss him to his death, but Frank weakly told him that there was something about Aunt May he needed to know.

This caused the crazed Peter to hesitate. Frank wasn't sure if it was sanity fighting through or confusion over what Frank was saying. Either way, Frank emptied his gun into Peter's chest, killing him.
