Amazing Spider-Man Vol 3 1 Granov Variant Textless

Preface

The history of Spider-Man spans over 50 years of publication. Below is an unabridged history. For an abridged history, go to: Spider-Man (Peter Parker).

Early life

Peter Parker was born in Queens to CIA agents Richard and Mary Parker. While Peter was still an infant, his parents were assigned to infiltrate the Algerian based spy ring controlled by the communist agent, the Red Skull (Albert Malik). The moment the Red Skull learned that Richard and Mary were double agents, he had them killed in an airplane crash overseas by one of his agents. The Skull then had his parents framed for treason. [1] Peter went to live with his uncle and aunt, Ben and May Parker, in Forest Hills, New York, they became Peter’s surrogate parents and raised him as if he were their own son. Over the next 9 years, Parker grew to be extremely bright in science and became a high honors student at Midtown High School. Parker's shyness and scholastic interest often made him a social outcast and a target for bullies, primarily football star Flash Thompson.

Becoming Spider-Man

While attending a public exhibition demonstrating the safe handling of nuclear laboratory waste materials, sponsored by the General Techtronics Corporation, then-15-year-old Peter Parker was bitten on the hand by a spider that had been irradiated by a particle accelerator used in the demonstration. Unbeknownest to him, after the spider fell from his hand, it bit a girl, Cindy Moon, on the ankle before it died from the radiation.[2] Making his way home afterwards, Peter discovered he had somehow gained incredible strength, agility, and the ability to cling to walls; spider-like traits that he immediately associated with the spider bite.[3]

Introducing: Spider-Man!

Encountering an ad offering a cash prize for staying in the ring for three minutes with a professional wrestler, Peter decided this would be a good way to test his powers. Wearing a mask to avoid potential embarrassment in the case he lose, Peter easily defeated his opponent. A TV producer observed his performance and convinced him to go on television with his 'act.' Designing a full costume and fabricating a fluid similar to a spider's web and wrist-mounted web-shooters, Peter called himself Spider-Man, becoming an immediate sensation.

Following his first TV appearance, Peter failed to act to stop an escaping thief, claiming that it was not his responsibility to do so. Peter forgot the incident as his fame rose, but days later he returned home at night to find his Uncle Ben had been murdered. Learning the police had the burglar responsible holed up in a warehouse, Peter changed to Spider-Man and easily captured him only to discover it was the same thief he had allowed to escape earlier. Filled with remorse, he realized that when someone has power, he has an obligation to use it responsibly, so he decided to become a superhero.[4]

Peter's early career as Spider-Man.

Taking on Great Responsibility

The first problem young Peter faced was the lack of money with the death of his uncle. Due to the fact that his Aunt May was too weak to work and Peter was seen as fragile, he decided to get a job, even though Aunt May wanted him to become a scientist instead. Peter even thought about using his spider powers for crime, but decided against it after thinking how his Aunt would react to him in jail.

However, it was seeming impossible to him to find a job in order to pay his growing debts. As Spider-Man, he was not able to continue his career as TV star, because of J. Jonah Jameson, owner of the NOW magazine and the newspaper Daily Bugle. Jameson started a campaign against Spidey, stating that he was a bad influence for children and a criminal for taking justice into his own hands, referring to the situation with the burglar. These protests start taking effect and turning the public against Spider-Man, causing Spidey's manager to leave him, impeding his ability to earn money even as Spider-Man.[5]

Peter searched through the wanted ads, only to be rejected by all the employers. Not being able to use his super-powers as Spider Man infuriated Peter, and his fury only intensified after seeing his Aunt May selling her jewelry to try and earn some money.

Spider-Man vs. the strangest foe of all time... Doctor Octopus.

Spidey's second heroic action was to save Jameson's astronaut son, John Jameson from an accident in a deviated space capsule. Spider-Man hitched a ride on a small airplane, and boarded the capsule during re-entry. Spidey then attached the missing capsule piece- allowing it to land safely. Although he had saved John, Spidey was still blamed by J.J. Jameson for the accident.

Later, trying to find a way to make some money, he decided to join the superhero team the Fantastic Four. Spidey intrude into the Baxter Building, battling the FF, as a way of showing them his power, but the team refused Spidey's entry after explaining to him that they did not get paid for their actions and that they were a family, not an enterprise. Later that day, the Russian criminal and master of disguise known as the Chameleon used Spider-Man's identity to steal defense missile plans. The real Spidey was used by Chameleon as a pawn to escape the scene without problems. After managing to avoid capture by the police, Spider-Man caught Chameleon in a helicopter before he could reach a soviet submarine and handed him in to the authorities.[5] Peter finally found a way to make money when the Daily Bugle asked for photos of the winged criminal known as the Vulture. Not only did Spider-Man defeat the villain, he also found a way to take photos, which caused J.J. Jameson to hire Peter to get him pictures of Spider-Man, under the condition that the publicist would not ask Peter how he took the pictures[6].

Early in his career, Spider-Man fought many villains including the Tinkerer[6], Doctor Octopus, a good scientist who, after an accident, had four extra metallic arms attached to his back[7][8]; the Chamaleon's step-brother Kraven the Hunter, who tried to hunt Spider-Man; Sandman, a criminal turned into sand with shapeshifting powers[9]; Doctor Doom[10], the Fox (in his first team-up with the Human Torch)[11]; the Lizard, a brilliant scientist turned a giant reptile[12]; the Living Brain (a machine gone crazy)[13], Electro, a former electrician who in an accident was turned into a human battery[14]; the Kingpin of crime Big Man and his Enforcers[15], Mysterio, an illusionist who tried to make Spider-Man seen as a criminal[16]; his deadliest foe of all time: the Green Goblin, a mad criminal who wanted to be the new king of the underground[17][18], and Kraven the Hunter, who tried to hunt Spider-Man. Several of these villains would form the Sinister Six, under the leadership of Doctor Octopus himself, a team who tried to get Spider-Man by kidnapping Aunt May, trying to force Peter to "call" Spider-Man, but they failed[19].

During this time, Parker dated Betty Brant of the Daily Bugle, although Liz Allan had a crush on him. At the same time, both Peter's Aunt May and their neighbor, Anna Watson, were constantly encouraging Parker to date Anna's niece, Mary Jane Watson.

Before his high school graduation Peter continued to fight off menaces, including the Circus of Crime[20][21], the Scorpion[22], the Beetle[23], Mysterio (who pretended to be a renowned psychiatrist in an attempt to make Spider-Man believe he was insane)[24], Spencer Smythe's Spider-Slayers[25], the Crime-Master[26], the Molten Man[27], and Cat Burglar[28]. He also assisted the Avengers in defeating a Spider-Man robot created by Kang[29].

Spidey Unmasked!

A Hero in the University

Eventually, Peter graduated from high school and enrolled at Empire State University on a science scholarship[27], meeting new classmates such as Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy[30]. Even though he got off to a bad start with them, finally Peter became friends with them, as well as Flash Thompson, his high school bully who ironically was Spider-Man's biggest fan. After Spider-Man beat some more foes, such as the Looter and Mendel Stromm, the Green Goblin came back and discovered Spider-Man's identity, kidnapping him and revealing his own alter-ego, that of Norman Osborn, Harry's father. In a furious battle, the villain lost all memories of his time as a criminal.[31]

During that time, Spider-Man fought new foes such as the Rhino, a villain in an armored suit who tried to kidnap John Jameson; Shocker, a criminal with shock wave gauntlets; as well as teaming up with Dr. Strange to defeat the wizard known as Xandu[32]. He also tried to join the Avengers[33]. Also, Peter finally met Mary Jane Watson, but at that time he was interested in Gwen, so Mary Jane started dating Harry.

After finding an old newspaper clipping that identifies that his parents were traitors to their country in his aunt’s house, Peter decided to learn the full story, traveling to Algeria with the Fantastic Four's aid. He learns that his parents were supposedly spies who worked for the Red Skull and he came across their ID badges for the Skull's organization. Spider-Man also stumbles upon the original Nazi Red Skull and his men, who previously worked for the other Red Skull. In the aftermath, he finds that his father's CIA identification card, proving to Peter that his parents were secret government operatives. With evidence to clear his parents' names, Peter returns to the States. [1]

Weeks after the return of Kraven the Hunter and battling a new Vulture, Peter started wondering if he may be better off not being Spider-Man. Crime rose and a Kingpin appeared in NY, and abducted J. J. Jameson. Peter was forced to return to his heroic identity.[34] Spider-Man went on to team up with the Human Torch again to take down The Wizard and Mysterio[35], suffer amnesia and temporarily team up with Doctor Octopus[36], fight Ka-Zar the Savage and his companion, Zabu[37] and a new type of Spider-Slayer, and a member of The Frightful Four, Medusa[38].

A mystical artifact called the Tablet of Life and Time, exhibited in ESU was stolen by Kingpin, the Tablet passed over many people who tried to get it, including Spider-Man, Shocker (who was working for Kingpin) and Man Mountain Marko (who was working for the Maggia crime family) Finally the Tablet got to the Maggia boss, Silvermane, who forced Doctor Curt Connors to translate the tablet. Connors managed to create a powerful rejuvenation serum from it. Silvermane drank it and became a young man again. But the serum made Silvermane regress beyond birth. Meanwhile Connors, as the Lizard, escaped.[39]

The Death of the Stacys

File:Peter Parker (Earth-616) and George Stacy (Earth-616) dying.JPG

The Death of George Stacy

Soon after, Doctor Octopus managed to get his metallic arms again and broke free from prison. After Spider-Man thwarted his attempt to hijack a plane, he started attacking the city's main power plant. Although Spider-Man escaped from Ock, Spider-Man was attacked by surprise by Ock the next day. They battled on a rooftop and Captain Stacy died when saving a child from falling debris. Before dying, Stacy revealed to Spider-Man he knew his identity, and asked him to take care of Gwen.[40]

Being accused for Stacy's death, Spider-Man faced some heroes who wanted to take him to authorities, such as the X-Man Iceman and the beginner hero The Prowler. Peter even went to London to prevent Gwen's departure forever, after her father's death.[41]

Things got worse. Harry became addicted to LSD, and Peter, along with Gwen and Mary Jane, took care of him. This familial stress caused Norman Osborn's Green Goblin persona to return, where he again battled Spider-Man. During the battle Norman was exposed to his son's declining condition in the hospital. This severed the control of the Green Goblin persona over Norman and caused Norman to have amnesia.[42]

File:Peter Parker (Earth-616) and dead Gwendolyne Stacy (Earth-616).JPG

The Night Gwen Stacy Died!

With his secret identity making his life impossible, Peter tried to give up being Spider-Man and created a cure for his powers that instead made him grow four extra arms[43]. With the help of Curt Connors he found a cure, fighting Morbius the Living Vampire and his alter-ego in the process. He finally returned to normal, even though it meant interfering in a gang war between Doctor Octopus and Hammerhead[44] and battling Hulk in Canada.[45]

Norman Osborn's alter ego resurfaced again and the Green Goblin kidnapped Gwen Stacy. Spider-Man found them at the Brooklyn Bridge, where they fought and Gwen fell from the bridge. She died when Spider-Man reached her with a web-line, breaking her neck. Green Goblin escaped. A furious Peter searched, found and battled him again. In this battle Norman was impaled with his own Goblin glider, apparently killing himself.

Peter was extremely distraught over the death of Gwen, possibly even more so than when Uncle Ben died. An equally traumatized Mary Jane tried to comfort Peter after Gwen's death; she was initially brushed off, but they eventually got closer.[46]

Being accused of the death of both Stacys, Spider-Man was confronted by heroes such as Power Man and the Punisher in the latter's crime-fighting debut[47]. Later, Harry, who had wanted revenge on Spider-Man for his father's death since it happened, took the Green Goblin mantle and kidnapped Flash Thompson, Mary Jane and Aunt May in an attempt to lure him out and kill him. Spider-Man managed to find him at his father's old home and defeated him, leaving him to the authorities. Harry was sent to an asylum.[48]

The First Clone Saga

File:Peter Parker (Earth-616) vs. Peter Parker (Ben Reilly) (Earth-616).JPG

"Even if I live... I die!"

Peter had to go on a work trip with Robbie Robertson, and he and Mary Jane shared their first kiss at the airport. After returning from the trip to France, Peter found himself with Gwen Stacy, but could not bear to rekindle their relationship because of his kiss with MJ. With the help of Ned Leeds, Spider-Man found out that Gwen Stacy was a clone created by the Jackal, who, after defeating Spider-Man with the help of Tarantula, was revealed to be Peter's professor, Miles Warren.[49]

After kidnapping Leeds and Spider-Man, Warren explained to the hero that he loved Gwen and blamed Spider-Man for her death. And after managing to clone a frog, he used a blood sample from Gwen to clone her. Later, Spider-Man was left unconscious in a stadium, where he battled a clone of himself to save Ned from a bomb.

Gwen's clone made Jackal realize everything was wrong, so he freed Ned and the bomb exploded, apparently killing him and the Spider-Clone. Spider-Man took the corpse of his clone and buried it at an industrial chimney, while the clone of Gwen Stacy left New York[50]. Unsure whether he was the real Peter Parker or the clone, he had Curt Connors run tests on him. However, he never checked the results, being convinced by his emotions for Mary Jane that he must be the original[51].

Peter had to leave Betty Brant's engagement party to defeat the Shocker, causing friction between him and Mary Jane[52]. He then came into conflict with the Kingpin once more who was trying to acquire parts of a crime super computer before it was activated[53]. The computer itself turned out to be self-aware and a menace[54]. Peter served as best man at Ned Leeds' and Betty Brant's wedding[55]. He had to deal with Dr. Octopus kidnapping his aunt May as a result of being haunted by the ghost of Hammerhead[56], defeated the Fly[57] and faced off against the Tinkerer, who had reconstructed the Spider-Mobile at the orders of the Kingpin[58]. He teamed up with the X-Man Nightcrawler and the Punisher to being down Jigsaw who was trying to fame the Punisher for several sniper killings[59].

Spider-Man faced Harry's psychologist, Bart Hamilton, who became the third Green Goblin, who, after various encounters, died at the hands of Harry[60]. Peter proposed marriage to Mary Jane, but she would not accept, making their relationship falter. MJ went to Florida with her Aunt Anna.

Spider-Man managed to clear his name, while Peter Parker graduated from ESU.[61] Also, Spencer Smythe, the creator of the Spider-Slayers, died from illness after trying to kill Spider-Man and Jameson, the men he blamed for ruining his life.[62]

Never let the Black Cat cross your path!

Enter the Cat

As Peter continued to live on his own, his Aunt May decided to transform her home into a senior citizens' boarding house. At one point Parker began a romantic relationship and heroic partnership with the Black Cat, developing feelings for her and even starting to love her, although Parker later broke it off due to the Black Cat's disdain for Parker's life apart from being Spider-Man.

A "Friend" from Outer Space

Prior to this, Spider-Man was among the heroes kidnapped by the powerful Beyonder to fight in his "Secret Wars". When his costume was damaged, Parker tried using the futuristic technology on the Beyonder's planet to repair it, and instead, replaced it with an alien "symbiote" which transformed into a black version of Spider-Man's costume, perhaps based on that of the newly appeared Spider-Woman. Parker used the symbiote for his costume, which was capable of transforming into street clothing as well as generating webs. Later, Mary Jane returned to Peter's life.

After a vicious "final" battle with Kraven the Hunter (in which Peter actually died and, reborn, crawled out of his grave), a man named Puma dislocated Spidey's arm. Spider-Man passed out pushing it back into place. Black Cat saved Peter from Puma and left Peter at home. MJ came over to visit, because she thought Peter felt let down by something, and tried to have some fun. But Peter shoved MJ out of the door when his Spider Sense went off. Just as Peter shut the door, Puma crashed in. During the battle in another building Puma confirmed that Spidey's web was organic. After the battle Peter returned home and Mary Jane told him that she knew he was Spider-Man. Peter tried to convince her that she was wrong, but Black Cat came in and MJ left. Cat said MJ is nobody, and Peter snapped at her. When she started to leave the suit webbed her hand, and Felicia (thinking he'd done this on purpose) decided to stay. Peter noticed that the costume behaved strangely, so he sought help from the Fantastic Four's Mister Fantastic, who discovered the costume was a living organism. He helped remove the costume by force, and kept it at the Fantastic Four's headquarters in captivity. The symbiote would later escape, plaguing the life of Parker again and ultimately merging with one of Spider-Man's critics, Eddie Brock, creating the villain, Venom. In a climatic fight, Spider-Man defeated this new foe.

Improving Life

As Spider-Man, Parker met and fought alongside nearly every hero in Manhattan, if not the world. Although he fought alongside the Avengers many times[29], he unsuccessfully (for now) tried to join their number when he learned of the financial stipend their members received. Parker helped them stop an invasion and subsequent breakout of the energy research and villain internment facility, Project Pegasus. Spider-Man was deemed, however, to disrupt the team's cohesiveness (perhaps due to either his loner nature, lack of experience, or annoying sense of humor), and was denied membership. Later, however, Spider-Man met the international mercenary Silver Sable, often working on her behalf.

Vs. Venom.

Soon after a fight with Electro, Peter and Mary Jane married. Spider-Man later defeated Venom in battle again. Peter's old friend Harry Osborn leased the couple a loft in the condo that Harry and his family were also living in. Mary Jane's cousin Kristy also temporarily moved in with the Parkers at one point. Eventually, however, the Parkers had to move into a room in Aunt May's house due to financial problems.

At this time, Spider-Man once again allied with the Avengers to stop the alien Nebula from destroying reality with her Infinity Union. An increasingly unnerved Spider-Man, unaccustomed to dealing with cosmic-scale menaces, accidentally allowed Nebula to absorb the power of the Infinity Union, although the Avengers, Spider-Man, and the alien Stranger thwarted her regardless. Parker was told again that Spider-Man might not be suited for Avengers membership, although later he was inducted into their number on a provisional basis.

Parker later returned to his studies and postgraduate work as a lab assistant at Empire State University. During this time, Parker was briefly endowed with the powers of Captain Universe, in order to stop a series of robots, including the mutant-killing Sentinels. Once the menace was defeated, the extra powers left him.

Spider-Man, the Jackal and the Spider-Clones.

The Second Clone Saga

Aunt May supposedly suffered a debilitating heart attack. This also led to the Parkers meeting Ben Reilly, whom Peter had fought earlier as a clone of himself. Reilly created a similar spider-costume, dubbed the Scarlet Spider by the Daily Bugle, and helped Spider-Man in his adventures. Shortly afterward, Mary Jane became pregnant. Peter and Mary Jane briefly moved to Portland, as Parker considered retiring from being Spider-Man in order to start a family. A series of events caused Peter to think that he was a clone of Ben Reilly, rather than the other way around, so he gave up being Spider-Man and became the Scarlet Spider while slowing down on crime-fighting to raise his family.

Reilly eventually assumed the identity of Spider-Man himself, since the second villain by the name of Doctor Octopus tarnished the reputation of the Scarlet Spider. Mary Jane, meanwhile, was to give birth to baby May Parker, but was rushed to the hospital under the pretense of a medical emergency. The original Green Goblin (Norman Osborn, having somehow survived) stole the baby, unbeknownst to the Parkers, who were told the baby died in a miscarriage (in reality, the baby was stillborn). When the Green Goblin tried to kill Peter Parker, Ben Reilly jumped in front of the Goblin's glider, sacrificing himself to save Parker. Reilly's body disintegrated, finally convincing Peter that he was the original. Due to this "revelation" and the fact that his daughter had died, Peter once again became Spider-Man.

The Final Chapter

After many more months of adventuring, Norman Osborn returned to take control of the Daily Bugle. He angered Peter, which caused Spider-Man to brutally beat Norman, which was all caught on a hidden camera in his house. The recording was shown to the media which made Spider-Man a criminal and increased pressure was placed on capturing him. In order to continue his crime-fighting career and investigate the fraudulent claims, Parker relinquished his Spider-Man identity while creating four unique and separate ones: Dusk, Hornet, Prodigy, and Ricochet. As Dusk, Parker was able to investigate the villain Trapster and publicly exonerate Spider-Man, at which point he resumed his Spider-Man identity. Later, the Golden Age hero Black Marvel acquired the four costumes and gave them to four teenagers, forming a team he named the Slingers.

When the Avengers were attempting to reform their number after disbanding for a year after the crisis known as Onslaught, Spider-Man was contacted due to his past affiliation with them. However, by his own choice, Parker decided to dissolve ties with the Avengers.

Aunt May was later discovered to still be alive; the woman who seemingly died was in actuality a genetically modified actress. Parker, Mary Jane, and Aunt May moved to an apartment in Manhattan. Parker had promised Mary Jane to give up his Spider-Man identity, but he would continually sneak out at night as Spider-Man. Their marriage began to strain, in part because of Mary Jane's new modeling career and in part because she discovered Parker's secret. Before they could reconcile, however, Mary Jane was supposedly killed when her airplane exploded. For a long time, Parker refused to believe her dead, but eventually grew to accept it.

Parker discovered Mary Jane was alive, captured by a villain who had been stalking her prior to her airplane flight. After a brief reconciliation, Mary Jane requested to leave Parker once more, saying that she needed time to adjust by herself.

A New Lease on Life and The Spider-Totem Predators

Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 500 Textless

Spider-Man with his soulmate MJ Watson and his Enemies.

Peter soon took a job as a teacher at his somewhat beloved Midtown High. After getting this job, he encountered a strange old man named Ezekiel who possessed powers very similar to his. He knew Peter's secret identity and talked to him about things about his powers he had never thought of, like, "Did the radiation enable the spider to give you these powers? Or was the spider trying to give you those powers before the radioation killed it?" He told him that he defeated all those animalistic themed villians because their totemic nature was stolen, impersonated or borrowed, and Peter's was given freely. After many questions, telling Spidey his powers were 'totemistic' in nature, that a totem is a being that connects the annimal and human reamls, and showing Peter what he could have done had he stayed in showbiz.

Morlun

Ezekiel warned Peter about a totemistic predator named Morlun, who would try to kill him, he offered him a room which will block him from Morlun's detection. After ignoring the warnings of Ezekiel, and being defeated by Morlun, Spidey attempted to get Ezekiel to help him. With Ezekiel refusing to do so, telling Spider-Man that the room was now useless since Morlun had his scent. Spidey went after Morlun again after Spidey found him terrorizing innocent people.

After being nearly beaten again, Ezekiel helped Spidey, but seemingly perished. Peter managed to escape with a sample of Morlun's blood, which he discovered contained the DNA of every genus in the animal kingdom. Realizing that Morlun's DNA was pure, Peter found a weakness he could exploit. Luring Morlun to a nuclear power plant, Spidey then injected himself with a lethal dose of radiation at a nuclear plant, becoming an "impure totem" which hurt Morlun when he tried to absorb his life force, enabling Spider-Man to defeat him by injecting him with radiation with every punch he trew. Morlun pleeded Spider-Man to spare him, saying he has doing what he need to survive. While considering what to do with him, Morlun's assistant, Dex, shoot Morlun. He let Dex go and returned to Ezekiel's offices only to discover they were empty. He found footprints on the outside of the windows and a rubber spider. After the brutal battle, Spider-Man returned to his apartment, and fell deep asleep. Aunt May came by, only to find that Peter had severe wounds and scars, and a tattered Spider-Man costume on the floor.

After a day of coming to grips with the fact that her nephew was Spider-Man, Aunt May revealed that she knew his identity following the events of September 11th. Now their relationship was stronger than ever, and eventually, Mary Jane and Peter reunited for good.

The Queen

A Mysterious woman named the Queen used her powers to summon and control all the people in New York with the insect gene, causing Peter’s Spider-Sense to go mad. Spider-Man arrived on her location as well as Captain America. When Spider-Man reaches the roof he confronted the Queen until she screams, sending him to the floor in pain. Cap tries to save him, but is attacked by her followers. She then picks up Spider-Man and kisses him, causing a genetic mutation in him. He awakens to find himself trapped by the Queen. He is freed by Cap, who reveals he dated Adrianna in 1945. As Spider-Man chases the Queen she makes some of the brainwashed people into suicide and he is defeated by her mental power. Cap then knocks the Queen of the building, but she manages to survive. Mary Jane later confronts him about the kiss with the Queen, which was broadcasted on TV, Spider-Man web-swings to clear his mind. Back at his apartment Spider-Man has a nightmare about the Queen and wakes, feeling ill. Peter started to mutate and acquired four eyes. Spider-Man mutates even further into a monstrous humanoid spider. After having a brief confrontation, the Queen defeats Spider-Man and leaves with him. Spider-Man becomes a giant spider under her command. The giant spider had been engineered to give birth to the Queen’s offspring, but it died due to complications arising from the transformation. In a fit of rage, the Quenen destroyed the laboratory with her telekinetic powers, and ordered her drones to activate a bomb designed to kill everyone in America except people with the insect gene. The Queen left before she could see the spider's husk split open, revealing a reborn Peter. Parker gained organic webbing and augmented strength and Spider-Sense. Spider-Man disarmed the bomb, and the Queen was seemly killed when S.H.I.E.L.D. attacked her subterranean base. [63]

Shatra

When he strayed from the safe path during visit to the Astral Plane to locate the inter-dimensional kidnapper known as Shade, he found a giant spider-like being who told him that he was "one of us... and not one of us... your time is not yet". An inhabitant of the Astral Plane Shatra, who was a Astral concept of a Spider-Wasp, the spider's predator, immediately realized Spider-Man’s true nature and determined that he would make the perfect meal for her hungry young hatchlings. She followed him back to Earth and engaged her victim in battle and demonstrated her superiority, but he managed to escape. Shathra turned the game in a new direction, changing to a human form and adopting the name “Sharon Keller”. Claiming to had a relationship with Spider-Man, she went on live TV and keep talking to lure Spider-Man. Spurred by MJ's distress, Peter Parker rose to the taunt and confronted Sharon in TV. Shathra reverted to her true form, having achieved her goal of pushing Spider-Man to act on instinct, bringing the conflict to the simple level of “natural order”, in which the Spider-Wasp is the hunter and the Spider the meal. Spider-Man managed to avoid descending into mindless fury and managed to escape to brief safety. He was rescued by Ezekiel, who took Spider-Man to a sacred temple in Ghana and helped Peter to set a trap for Shathra. Spider-Man consciously allowed his arachnid side to take the forefront enough so to capture Shatra, and to feed her to whatever spider dwelt in the depths of the temple. Ezekiel also warns Peter that Morlun and Shathra are not the only ones hunting him and another more powerful foe is coming for him.

The Gatekeeper

Later, Ezekiel warns Peter of the coming of the Gatekeeper, who controls mystical forces. Ezekiel says that the Gatekeeper sees him as unworthy, since he recieved his powers by accident, to be in possession of his powers so he will kill him. Ezekiel tells him to return to Ghana with him but he refuses. However, swarms of spiders attacked New York. Spider-Man tries to save as many as he can when Ezekiel says that the Gatekeeper has arrived to kill him and he urges him to go with him. The spiders gather to form the body of the Gatekeeper, who tells Peter that bugs are important to the world and the spiders are the hunters of the bug-world. Spider-Man attempts to fight him but he is outmatched and the Gatekeeper tells him that he was chosen by mystical forces to receive his powers from the students in the demostration, as he has become a natural hunter because for all the anger he carried in his life when he was bullied, never being able to fight back and reserving the anger to himself, making him never give in to the odds and a hunter because he was the prey. Peter realizes that contradicts what Ezekiel said and the Gatekeeper reveals that Ezekiel unworthy of his powers because he "stole" them. Spider-Man wakes battered and bloodied and Ezekiel tells him that he has to kill Peter because the Gatekeeper will only allow one of them to live. Peter realizes that the supernatural menaces he recently fought were after Ezekiel. They fought but Ezekiel defeats him by drugging him with a syringe. Ezekiel chains him to a column in a temple and stabs him with a knife to have his blood flow into the spider runes on the floor. Then a giant spider monster appears to kill Peter as Ezekiel walks away. In panic, Peter uses his Spider-Sense to bond with Ezekiel's mind and shows him his heroics and realizes that he has wasted his life seeking wealth and Peter is the one worthy of his powers. He goes and sacrifices himself instead and saves Peter. A shaman named Miguel buries Ezekiel and tells Peter that Ezekiel was redeemed by saving him. Peter asks him if his powers came from science or magic, and Miguel tells Peter that they came from both, that they co-exist and that Peter was meant to have them.

New Avengers

After the Avengers Disbanded, Peter was with MJ when an explosion caused by Electro was seen in the Raft Superhuman Security Prison. He arrived at the Raft to help control the breakout. Luke Cage, Daredevil, Sentry and Spider Woman (Really a Skrull), were already on the Raft and were assisted by Spider-Man, Captain America and Iron Man. Forty-five super-criminals were kept on the Raft by the heroes and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, but forty-two others escaped. The heroes, with the exception of Sentry and Daredevil, formed the New Avengers. Formed to deal with tasks that no single hero could handle, without the government involvement and financial burdens common to Avengers' history. May, Peter, and Mary Jane moved into Avengers Tower after an enemy destroyed both Peter's and May's places.

The Other Spider

Peter began having black outs and dreams about Morlun, Kraven the Hunter, Uncle Ben, and spidery imagery. He was hit by a bullet while battling the Tracer at a bank robbery. After Tracer escaped, Spider-Man saw a doctor who treated his wound and take a blood test. The doctor informs Peter that he is dying for an unknown reason, which he tells to, MJ. While fighting Tracer's robots his powers started to fail. Morlun confronts Peter and tells him he would rather watch him deteriorate than fight. Spider-Man returns home and finds Tracer there and attacks him. Tracer assesses his health and refuses to fight him in his state. Peter strangles Tracer until his skin melts, revealing him a machine. Peter then tell his Aunt what is wrong with him.

He goes to see Reed Richards, Hank Pym, Bruce Banner, and the Black Panther. But none could discover the cause of the illness or hope to make a cure in time. Back in New York, He encounters the Enforcers member The Ox, confussing him with Morlun. Peter almost killed him before being stopped by Daredevil. He seeks Doctor Strange, who can’t use his magic to cure Peter and tells him to prepare for death. Spider-Man considers taking MJ to Las Vegas and using his spider-sense to win money for his family, but he drops the idea. Peter and Mary Jane go to a space-pod overlooking Earth and enjoy the view. While web-swinging in the city, he encounters Morlun at the Daily Bugle building, who is ready to kill him. They fight and Morlun throws him into an office room. He smashes a computer monitor on Morlun's head and flees, Morlun following him behind. He webs his face and throws him to the pavement below but he isn’t defeated. Not wanting to endanger civilians, Spider-Man takes the fight to the Empire State University. But he is tossed around the building and sended through a wall back to the street, where he is beaten senselessly to the ground. Spider-Man still fights back until Morlun rips his left eye out and eates it.

Before he can kill Spider-Man, the police arrive and Morlun leaves him to drain his life force later. The paramedics take the near-dead Spider-Man to the hospital. Morlun goes to his hospital bed to finish him. MJ attempts to stop him, but Morlun throws her across the room and breaks her arm. However, Peter wakes up and his savage, animalistic spider-side takes over, developing sharp teeth and stingers in his wrists. He attacks Morlun, impaling his arms to the floor and biting his neck, killing him. He reverts to normal and says goodbye to MJ before falling dead in her arms. The New Avengers take his body to the morgue room in Avengers Tower. In the night, his body briefly sprung to life and disappeared, leaving only his dead skin. It formed a cocoon of webbing in the Brooklyn Bridge. In the cocoon, a voice tells Peter he never understood what he was and is too scared to truly be a "Spider-Man", only focusing on his human part and not his spider part. Morlun managed to kill the human, but the spider survived and killed Morlun to save them both. It tells him that he will only be reborn if he accepts both parts, asking him: "Are you the man who dreamed of being a spider? Or the spider who dreamed of being a man? Are you the one...or are you the other?" Peter agreed and is resurrected with a new and completely healed body. He goes to the Avengers Tower and tells M J and Aunt May that he will never leave them again. Peter goes to the room where his skin is and removes his wedding ring from it and before heading back to bed.

After getting a checkup from Stark, Peter takes Mary Jane to web sling, talking about what happened. When he returns, he finds the top of the tower covered in webbing. Inside, Parker finds a swarm of pirate spiders that ate his old body. The spiders then formed a body which battles Spider-Man. Before anything else can happen, the construct punches through the wall and escapes. Spider-Man chases it but it escapes in the sewer. As Peter follows the being, called Ero, tells him that they are both parts of the same whole, that cosmic forces are vying for control of his life and that “she” is his opposite. She told him a spider-deity known as “The Great Weaver” thought that his death was premature and revived him, others disagreed and was being pulled in different directions as a result. When Iron Man finishes his tests, Mary Jane asks if he is okay, he claims to be fine, but in the mirror he sees the deity from his dreams. While saving everyone inside collapsing building, he displayed enhanced powers, night vision, vibration and air current detection via his hair and webbing, greater clinging ability and ability to carry objects on his back the same way he wall crawls. Back home, Peter and Mary Jane are discussing about his transformation. He tells her that when he got his powers, his fear that kept him from discovering more of them, but now he isn't afraid and wants to use his new powers. Mary Jane tells him he is a new man. Iron Man reveals his gift to Peter, a new armored costume for him.[64][65][66]

Despite misgivings and with the support of his family, Peter initially sided with Iron Man in support of superhero registration, after being unsure initially, as he felt that heroes needed to get public support for their actions. Many of the heroes on that side had public identities, with him being the only major supporter without one following Iron Man's unmasking; Iron Man also said it was a positive thing to unmask if they were to gain support. He planned to liquidate his assets and flee the country in case his unmasking caused any problems, but his family suggested against it, believing that Peter needed to get recognition for his actions. With Iron Man at his side, at a live press conference in Washington, D.C., Peter unmasked and said "My name is Peter Parker, and I have been Spider-Man since I was 15 years old". His siding with the pro-registration heroes also saw him gaining the "Iron Spider" armor, which Stark had been building since Peter's death and resurrection.

Reaction to the unmasking was diverse. Among the negative supporters was Jameson (who fainted upon watching the broadcast, and came to "disown" Peter, having seen him like a son over the years) and Liz Allan (who blamed Peter for causing so much suffering in their lives).

However, fighting against the fugitive heroes and the existence of the Thor clone left a poor taste in his mouth, and he even found out that Iron Man was tracking him with the Iron Spider suit. This caused him to switch sides and instead join the renegades. In retaliation, the pro-registration heroes tried to kill him; although severely bloodied, he was saved by the Punisher, who took him to the Secret Avengers, having also decided to join the anti-registration heroes. After joining the team, Spider-Man interrupted a news broadcast, announcing that he had changed sides. Spider-Man was one of the few heroes who did not accept the general amnesty after the arrest and death of Captain America, continuing to work with the underground New Avengers.

Peter took the Death of Captain America hard, even blaming himself for his death despite not being present at the shooting. After an encounter with Rhino and receiving condolence from Wolverine, Spider-Man watched Cap's funeral on TV with the New Avengers; when the team discussed why they didn't go, Spider-Man said they could not risk getting arrested by Tony Stark on the spot.

"Any questions?": Peter publicly unmasks

Back in Black

Peter's now-public identity allowed the Kingpin to put a hit on Parker's family. An assassin critically injured Aunt May and Peter donned the black suit to track down those who were responsible. Realizing he could not afford for his identity to be public knowledge, Peter agreed to aid the Scarlet Spiders in return for their help in re-establishing his secret identity.[67] Towards the end of his search, Peter even had an encounter with the One-Above-All.

Back in Black.

Peter grew increasingly desperate to save the life of his Aunt May. He sought the help of Dr. Strange, finding that even magic could not help him save Aunt May's life. After appealing to Tony Stark, Jarvis was sent with $2 million to pay the hospital fees and give her the best care possible. At one point, Eddie Brock was found in Aunt May's room; where he attempted to commit suicide by jumping out of the window. The interdimensional Demon Mephisto offered to save Aunt May in exchange for Peter and MJ's love. As part of Mephisto's deal, everyone would forget Peter's identity as Spider-Man. Because of this decision, the daughter they would have had never existed.[68]

Then Mephisto re-arranged history to make it so that Peter unwittingly would not show up to his wedding day, but stayed with Mary Jane as a long time couple. But this re-arrangement also caused it to be Doctor Strange who erased people's memories about Parker's secret identity (except Mary Jane, the Jackal, all his clones and Harry Osborn, who was now alive thanks to the re-arrangment of history, though he later revealed it to the Fantastic Four) and protected Peter with a "psychic blind spot". But Mary Jane was bitterly hurt from having knowledge of a time of great emotional pain that no one else on the planet remembered. She and Peter agreed that they were still in love with each other but they had to accept that their relationship put everyone they cared about in danger and that it was best for them to remain as friends.

Back from five years in a European rehab center was Harry Osborn. While searching for a job, Peter joined the Daily Bugle again which was now bought out by Dexter Bennett, and began to work as a paparazzi reporter, which was something that neither his Aunt May or Harry approved of. However, after his photographs of the celebrity Bobby Carr resulted in the deaths of women by a crazed super villain stalker who was obsessed with him, Peter decided to destroy the new photos he took resulting in Bennett firing him. Peter soon learned that Bennett had blacklisted him to nearly every news source in town preventing Peter from finding work. However, Harry suggested that Peter find a job at a news source that was Bennett's enemy, which he did by joining the Front Line as it was not under Bennett's influence.

Dark Reign & American Son

Main article: Dark Reign

Due to the fact that Norman Osborn transformed Venom into a more Spider-Man like look and joined Osborn's Dark Avengers,[69] Peter had to reveal his secret identity to the New Avengers, in order to implicitly earn the team's trust. Upon doing so, Jessica Jones fled the place, as she had gone to high school with Peter and had a crush on him at the time.[70]

During a trip to the Macroverse, Spider-Man re-revealed to the Fantastic Four his identity, and after coming back two months later in standard time, J. J. Jameson become the new NY major. Then Spider-Man knew he must act against Norman Osborn and his Dark Reign.[71]. With help of the F4's Unstable Molecules, Spider-Man infiltrated Osborn's Avengers as Venom and discovered how Osborn wanted to make his son a new hero called American Son. After Spider Man was captured by Norman Osborn, Harry confronted Norman Osborn with the truth about his father's relationship with Lily Hollister (Harry's girlfriend). Spider-Man prevented Harry from killing Norman.[72]

Rematches and Grim Hunt

After the wedding of Aunt May and Jay Jameson, Jonah's parent, Spider-Man saved Jameson from Doctor Octopus with the help of the Human Torch. Around this time Mary Jane returned to New York, and Peter renewed his relationship with Black Cat. He later battled a man who wanted to kill Ben Reilly, and saw the return of Peter's living clone Kaine. Despite his problems, Spider-Man helped the original Jackpot start fighting crime[73] and overcame the corrupting control of Mister Negative's energy.[74]

The Kravinoff family started a vengeance scheme on Spider-Man, kidnapping Madame Web and Mattie Franklin, one of the Spider-Women.[75] In addition, Spider-Man managed to get a videotape of Osborn practicing illegal experiments to damage his reputation and leaked it to the public.[76]

Later, Spider-Man faced repowered villains such as Electro, who destroyed the DB! building; Sandman, who became obsessed with taking care of his "daughter" Keemia; Rhino, who left reformation to kill a new Rhino who murdered his wife; Mysterio, who starts a gang war; a new Vulture, who tries to kill Jameson; and The Lizard, who evolved and "killed" his alter-ego and his son Billy. Many of them where helped by Kraven's wife Sasha, who wanted revenge on Spider-Man.

The Kravinoffs killed Mattie Franklin to resurrect Grim Hunter, and finally hunted Spider-Man and killed him to revive Kraven. However it was revealed that the corpse was Kaine's, who had earlier knocked out Peter and switched places to save him. After a battle with the Kravinoff family, Madame Web died and Julia Carpenter took up her mantle. The surviving Kravinoffs left New York. Later, Kaine was resurrected from his grave and mutated into a more spider-like creature by the Jackal.

Big Time

After Osborn's fall and the Registration Act's abolision following the Siege of Asgard and a massive war between Doctor Octopus and Spider-Man to get Norman Osborn's son by Lily Hollister, Spidey found that the child was actually Harry's, who later leaves the town to take care of him. Peter starts a relationship with police officer Carlie Cooper.

Spider-Man's hero career rose up again, he joined the reassemble Avengers and also staying with the New Avengers, who were outlaws no more. Peter found a dream job, thanks to Jameson's wife Marla Madison, as a compentation for Jameson firing him, as a scientist at Horizon Labs where he had access to much technology and resources and Spider-Man assisted the Avengers in defeating Doctor Octopus' army of macro-octobots. He then faced a new Hobgoblin and the Kingpin, but days later, he lamentably lost Marla in a fight between Alistair Smythe's Spider-Slayers.[77]

After the death of Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), Peter joined the Fantastic Four, now as the Future Foundation and helped them to fight an interdimensional version of Reed Richards, and the Sinister Six, who managed to steal tech from the Baxter Building.

Their third mission was in the Caribbean, on Earth. There, Reed located the epicenter of the dimensional anomalies the Future Foundation had been fixing. As the team explored the island, they were attacked by zombie pirates. It was revealed it was all a fake created by the Sinister Six, with only Mysterio and Chameleon really present, the other four members were robots. Meanwhile, Doctor Octopus and the others infiltrated the Baxter Building, stealing technology for Doc Ock's further plans.

Spider-Island

Spiders, spiders everywhere.

After helping Anti-Venom to reveal Mr. Negative's identity and help the Avengers Academy (as well as learning that Aunt May was moving to Boston with Jay), Spider-Man found himself with a new problem. The Jackal returned and gave the majority of New Yorkers spider-powers.

The Queen, now known s the Spider-Queen was revealed as the true mastermind, who wanted to turn the whole human race into spiders. Mr. Fantastic created a cure using the Anti-Venom Symbiote, also, after battling Peter (under Jackal's influence), Peter's clone Kaine was accidentally cured from his mutations, turning him into a perfect clone.

While he and the Avengers battled the Spider-Queen in Central Park, Kaine killed her and Peter managed to get the cure to every citizen via Doc Ock's (mentally controlled) octobots. He meet whith Jay and May while they were leaving for Boston. Peter runs into Kaine, who tells Peter that he's leaving New York and keeping Peter's stealth suit since Madam Web told Kaine he may need it. Also, because of revealing he had spider-powers during the Spider-Island event, Peter's psychic blind spot was weakened, letting Carlie know he was Spider-Man, which caused her to break up with him. While taking a last cure sample for MJ, he meet with Madame Web in the roof of Horizon Labs. She told him that he could depower himself with the cure sample and someone else will step in to take his place. Peter refuses, saying that throwing his gift away would be the most irresponsible thing he's ever done. Madame Web warns he is to suffer a loss. He then cures MJ and they look the Empire State Building, painted in his honor. [78]

Ends of the Earth

After fighting some old foes like the Vulture and his Vulture hechmen and teaming-up with Daredevil and Black Cat, and, the returned from death, Human Torch, Spider-Man faced the return of a menace.

Before his death, Doctor Octopus wanted to be remembered as the man who saved Earth by stopping the Greenhouse Effect. Equipped with a new suit, Spider-Man joined the Avengers to stop Octavius and his Sinister Six.[79]

Spider-Man's Anti-Sinister Six Suit from Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 682

Anti-Sinister Six Suit.

After every Avenger was subdued by Octavius, Silver Sable, who followed Spider-Man to his battle, saved him and Black Widow. When they tried to get to one of Octavius' manufacturing satellites, they defeated Sandman. Octavius asked for help from all nations, to capture Spider-Man. Octavius called on many villains to hunt down Spider-Man and his allies. To counter this, Spider-Man called on the heroes that were still on Earth to destroy the facilities of Octavius. When he and his allies arrived at the main base in Romania, Doc Ock stated that Spider-Man was right and he activated his satellites. This caused a huge explosion in the areas that were facing the sun. When the trio exited the base they saw what happened. Sable then asked if that is Symkaria to which Peter answered it is half of the world and Spider-Man said, "We failed". The destruction was revealed to be a trick made by Mysterio (only burning a small portion of a city in Skymaria, while Chameleon uses a robot to fight Spider-Man. After they are defeated, Mysterio is convinced by Spider-Man to help him catch the Octopus in his base in Guatemala, but Octavius used the mind-controlled Avengers as his new Sinister Six. For saving half of Symkaria, Sable kissed Peter, but he refused to get into a relationship with her because he had redeveloped feelings for Mary Jane.

Spider-Man, Sable and Widow managed to defeat the Avengers, then he and Sable headed to Octavius' underwater base. They were faced by Rhino while the base started to flood, Octavious trapped Sable and left Spider-Man with two choices, to continue to fight him in order to save Sable from drowning (but then Octavius would activate the lenses) or let him drown himself leaving Sable to stop Octopus. After leaving Sable to her death at her request, Spidey managed to destroy Octavius's arms and equipment before taking his foe away to a doctor, thus finally saving the world. Peter again was distraught over the deaths of Silver Sable and Rhino, as he felt that he could have saved them once again. Julia Carpenter, however, told him that Sable was alive.

Avengers vs. X-Men

When Cable returned to the present and kidnapped the Avengers, Spider-Man and Wolverine went to go rescue their team. Wolverine was keen on killing Cable, but Spider-Man was unsure of doing so. Cable however, was eventually defeated.

After failing to completely cure Lizard with the help of Morbius, Spider-Man sided with his fellow Avengers against the X-Men. He was present during the Siege of Utopia and together with Wolverine they attempted to take Hope away. They failed however as Hope's Phoenix powers manifested and incapacitated them. Spider-Man was later seen among one of the teams searching for Hope across the world, and came into conflict with several X-Men, most notably the new Juggernaut.

After the Phoenix Force was split into five pieces and possessed Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik, Namor and Colossus as its hosts, Spider-Man was brought to the mythical city of K'un-Lun due to a prophecy that predicted that he would train Hope Summers. She was initially unresponsive to him as a teacher, due to him being clueless about what to teach her, but after telling her what his uncle always told him "With great power comes great responsibility", she quickly took to him.

When the Avengers attempted to free their imprisoned comrades from the Phoenix Force enhanced Colossus and Magik, Spider-Man bought them time to do so. He attempted to slow them down but instead got beaten down by Colossus. When Magik told Colossus to kill him, Colossus replied that they are turning into things that are not due to their power, Spider-Man took advantage and managed to convince them to attack each other. And as they did, they were both knocked unconscious and were depowered of their Phoenix Force powers. He was present during the final battle against the Dark Phoenix, Cyclops, and was the first person to sense the manifestation of new mutants after Scarlet Witch and Hope destroyed the Phoenix Force.

Spider-Men: Two heroes of two worlds

While out web-swinging, Spider-Man came across a differently costumed Mysterio in a warehouse. After a brief skirmish, he was shot by Mysterio and sent through a dimensional rift into another dimension, where he encountered the Spider-Man of that world, Miles Morales. Though he initially gained the upper hand, Peter was ultimately subdued by Miles and taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. Upon regaining consciousness, Peter was interrogated by Nick Fury, who believed his story of coming from another universe and sent him off with Miles to learn this world's history, though not before Peter told Nick that he was much cooler than the Nick Fury of his world.

During their conversation, however, Peter and Miles were attacked by a robotic avatar of Mysterio, which self-destructed after a brief battle and knocked Miles unconscious. Peter subsequently went off on his own to investigate, and was shocked and horrified to discover that his counterpart in this world died in battle against the Green Goblin, and that not only was the city still mourning his loss, but his identity is now public knowledge. Making his way to Queens, he came across May Parker and Gwen Stacy. Initially furious at what they believed to be a disrespect of their Peter's memory, the two were taken aback when a distraught Peter unmasked himself before their eyes. Still, the two attacked Peter until Miles vouched for him, leading to Aunt May passing out.

When May awakened, she went upstairs and heard Peter exchanging stories with Gwen. When Gwen asked what happened to her in his dimension, Peter became uncomfortable and changed the topic. Aunt May and Peter had a tearful reunion and Peter was very surprised to find out he had a relationship with Kitty Pryde. Nick Fury came to pick him and Miles up, and for a second, Peter saw Mary Jane's Ultimate counterpart before she ran away. He was taken over to meet Iron Man, where the two began to work on a time-space formula until Miles pointed out a familiar building in a video of a previous fight against Mysterio.

Peter led the charge to Mysterio's headquarters, where they quickly subdued him before he could destroy the portal and trap Peter on Earth-1610 forever. Giving a satisfied Miles his blessing as the new Spider-Man, Peter returned to his world, subsequently running an online search to see if his world had a Miles Morales counterpart, and seems to be shocked by what he discovered on the net.

Dying Wish - Death of a Hero

File:Death of Dr. Octopus.jpg

Death of "Dr. Octopus"

By using a mind-swapping Octobot, Doctor Octopus managed to switch minds with Peter Parker, putting himself in Spider-Man's body and trapping Peter in his own, dying body.[80]

As Doc Ock could access to Peter's memories, Spider-Man could do the same to Octavius', and discovered that Octavius used an Octobot to switch brain patterns in order to perform his plan. Peter managed to access that Octobot and use it to send a message to many super villains to help him get out from prison. Hydro-Man, Scorpion and the Trapster heed the call, freeing "Doc Ock" from the Raft, then they were tasked with the mission to bring Spider-Man to him.

He put on a new set of tentacles and decided to search for the Octobot with which his mind was transferred. He decided to go to Stark Tower in order to ask Tony Stark for help, but encountered Octavius as Spider-Man, who released a set of giant Octobots worldwide in order to distract the rest of the Avengers. They battled until both fell from the Tower, fatally wounding Octopus. When Ock tried to use the brain-swapping Octobot, Spider-Man revealed that he was using a Carbonadium helmet, making his brain totally inaccessible for changing brains. Otto declared his final victory against Parker by giving him a lethal punch which caused Octopus to give his last breaths.

Both then discovered that the Octobot managed to connect their minds (although it could not swap them, Parker's mind was in Octavius'), and Peter forced Otto to relive "his" most suffering experiences and memories that Spider-Man actually lived out, making him realize the responsibility his power came with. Otto told Peter he did not want this, but they could not change bodies in time. Finally, Otto promised Peter to continue his legacy both as Spider-Man. Satisfied that his final wish was granted, Peter Parker died.[81]

Superior Spider-Man

File:Peter mind.png

Peter's construct declaring to Otto that his friends and family are his strength.

While Otto Octavius continued the legacy of Spider-Man, he accidentally performed certain actions against his will, such as saving someone's life as the original Parker would do.[82] The portion of Parker's memories his head, combined with Parker's consciousness entering his original body, formed a construct[83] which took "life of their own" (not actual life, but rather an appearance closer to that of a ghost) as a subconsciousness (thus not able to control the actions of his organism entirely), intent on reclaiming his life and body back by overcoming Otto from the inside out and attempt to get help from people around who would understand.[84]

File:The Battle of Minds.png

The battle in the brain of Peter Parker

After numerous occasions in which Peter shortly controlled his body, Otto attempted to use equipment to determine the source of several spasms his body was experiencing. Otto figured out that Peter's memories somehow created a fragment of Peter running around inside his head. To the memory fragment's shock, Otto could now hear "Peter" inside his mind and decided to put an end to him once and for all.[83] Using a neurolitic scanner Otto started a mind-wipe, and finally managed to wipe the fragment after dealing with it directly, by plunging himself into his brain.[85]

When Carlie Cooper discovered the truth about Otto, she visited the grave where he buried Peter to pay her respects, apologize for not believing him when he told her that he was really Peter, and promise to make Octavius pay for what he had done. However, she accidentally fell into the grave only to find out it's empty, leaving Peter's location a mystery at the moment. As Menace (who also kidnapped Carlie) was at the scene, it is most likely that the minions of the Goblin King took the body for unknown reasons. What is known is that the aforementioned minions know of Peter's death from Carlie's journal.[86]

Superior Venom

File:Peter Parker helps Otto.png

Peter helps Otto to fend off the symbiote

After Octavius bonded with the Venom symbiote, Tony Stark lent his Iron Man suit to Flash Thompson, the former host of Venom, who snuck up behind Otto and punched him. Flash managed to convince the Venom symbiote to return to him, but Otto tried to cast the symbiote out, being unable to. Peter's construct returned and lent a hand, unknown to Otto, and swore that he would be free. After Otto expelled the symbiote, Peter's construct decided he would keep a low profile for the time being, as he did not want to risk being erased again. However, he was worried that if Otto kept doing what he was doing, then he might have to take further action.[87]

Peter's construct examines what remained of his memories.

Later on, in the Mindscape, where Otto and Peter share the same psyche, Peter's construct examines what was left of his world, noting that there was barely anything left, Otto having wiped out nearly all of his memories, except the ones he had shared with him and the few Otto had committed to his memory. Peter's construct reminds himself that he is Spider-Man and Peter Parker, but then comes to terms with the fact that he is just fragments that got left behind. He falls to his knees, questioning himself as to what he could do, since he could not beat Otto even at full strength.

However, Peter soon gathers his determination. He states that anyone can win a fight when the odds are easy, and that only when the going's tough, then everything counts, as he looks on at the memory of him lifting tons of rubble back when he had to recover the ISO-36 sample to save Aunt May.

Peter declares that Otto had made a big mistake, having left behind the key memories that defined him. He knows more than anything that he is someone who never gives up, and that he will find a way to win no matter what.[88]

Goblin Nation

Peter Parker Brainwashed Superior Spider Man Vol 1 28

Peter's memory fragment is brainwashed into thinking he is Doctor Octopus.

While Otto is tracking the Goblin Underground, Peter continues to explore the Mindscape for a way to reclaim his body, noting that he had only 31 memory fragments left. He is puzzled as to why Otto is examining the memory of Gwen Stacy's death at the Brooklyn Bridge, but then refocuses his efforts on hiding. Finding a memory of him fighting Otto, he decides to plunge into the Otto illusion and search Otto's memories for a solution, but is overwhelmed by their sheer amount. He witnesses a bright light and, to his horror, realizes he is living through the moment of Otto's birth.[89]

Struggling to keep a hold of himself, Peter is forced to relive Otto's memories up till the point Otto got into the accident where his tentacles were fused to him. He finally declares that he is "Doctor Octopus." [90] Now bonded with Otto's memories, Peter thought about how "he" hated and blamed Spider-Man for ruining his plans every time, which resulted in his body dying from the number of injuries he received over the years. [91]

Revival

Peter Parker (Earth-616) from Superior Spider-Man Vol 1 30

Peter Parker is once more the Amazing Spider-Man.

Peter's consciousness continued to relieve the memories of Otto, until the point where Parker, in Otto's body, was dying, and as "Doctor Octopus", was forced to relieve Peter's memories. Peter, at this moment, realized that those memories were his own, and reached out for them. He declares that he will take everything back that had been lost.

As Otto chased Menace underground and was frozen to the spot at the sight of a train driven by the Goblin King about to run over Amy Chen, a girl whom Otto had saved, Peter resurfaced and prompted Otto to grab Amy and leap out of the way.Now aware of each other's presence, Peter told Otto that he was ready for another showdown, to which Otto acknowledged. After Otto left Amy in the care of a police officer, he swung back to Parker Industries, on the way admitting that Peter is the superior hero that everyone needed. Peter is baffled at the sight of the company with his own name, but Otto told him to hurry.

Otto then used the neurolitic scanner to plunge himself into the Mindscape once again, having decided to purge his memories to avoid giving Peter any distractions, which included his heroic deeds during his stint as Spider-Man, and finally his love for Anna Maria. Turning to Peter, Otto told him that he is the only person that could save Anna, and that he was the true Superior Spider-Man. With that, Otto faded away. Peter, now back in control of his body, took off the Superior Spider-Man suit in tears and retrieved his old costume from a nearby closet. Putting it on, he declared that it was his turn to save New York. [92]

Peter managed to track down the Goblin King and thwart his plan as well as save Anna Maria, but Osborn escaped. Afterwards, Peter took up the reins at Parker Industries, and apologized to his family members for "his" erratic behavior, promising to publicy cut all his ties with Spider-Man. He then went to visit Jameson as Spider-Man in an attempt to persuade him to stay and fight, but was too late, for Jameson had resigned from his post as Mayor. [93] Also, the Living Brain, who was Octavious' assistant was retained as his assistant. [2]

Lucky to be Alive

While still coming to terms with his position as CEO of his own company, Peter decided to take some time off and went web-slinging around the city, and encountered four criminals in the act of a heist. Early on, most of his suit, minus his mask, was stripped away by Skein's abilities, but Peter was ultimately able to apprehend them all. He returned to his apartment, only to find Anna Maria there (she had moved in), and was left speechless when she disclosed that she knew of his identity as Spider-Man. [2]

Peter then took some time to explain about how he and Octavius had a mind swap to Anna. After Anna left, Peter was called to Avengers Tower, where he was subjected to another series of stringent tests before he was re-accepted as an Avenger, but was shocked that they knew of Flash using the Venom symbiote as Agent Venom and never told him. Later, after Anna assisted Peter with work at his company, Peter saw an electrical surge and went off to deal with Electro, whose powers were out of control because of Octavious experimenting him, successfully fending him off. Afterwards, he had a brief reunion with Johnny Storm. Returning back to Parker Industries, Peter announced his plans to fucos the company in capturing, curing and depowering Electro and build New York a new super villain prison. [94]

Peter and some employes searched for energy readings from Electro’s last known location. While arriving at a building accidentaly set on fire by Electro, Peter changed into Spider-Man, and assisted fireman Pedro Olivera, MJ's current boyfriend. He was set upon by Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, who wanted revenge after previously being attacked and arrested by Octavius and losing all her gains and reputation. He tried to explain the mind swap to Felicia, but she keep atacking. In the end, Peter pretended to have Octavius' persona in him in order for Felicia to retreat for the time being. After he saved the fire fighter, he saw MJ ran to see Olivera and realized that she needed a normal life. [95]

Original Sin

When Thing was attacked by a telepathic Mindless One, Spider-Man went to go help him. He quickly recognized the creature and knew it was not telepathic. The two friends teamed up against the Mindless One, but it eventually shot itself with an Ultimate Nullifier. The Avengers then arrived, and the two heroes joined them in their (official) case into who murdered Uatu the Watcher. [96] While testing measures to deal whith Electro, Peter recieved a Code Omega from the Avengers, meaning a world-ending treat. Seeing the opportunity to rebuild the relations Octavious damaged, he answered the call. [97] He and the other Avengers, lead by Nick Fury, tracked down the Orb, who was responsible for the Mindless Ones and acquaried one of Uatu's eyes. When corned, the Orb activated the eye he had, revealing to anyone in the proximity deep secrets related to them, Spidey included. [98][99]

He had a vision in which the spider that bite him also bite Cindy, she couldn't control her powers and was approched by Ezekiel. He trained by her, until he runned some tests in her and locked her away in a room like the one he offered Spider-Man to hide from Morlun. After seeing the others were also affected, he left to look for Cindy. Realizing she was the one Madame Web told him would took his place in the Spider-Island, he arrived at Ezekiel's old building where he was offered a room to hide him from Morlun. Realizing that Ezekiel knew about he and Cindy from day one, he enters and triggers a pre-recorded message from Ezekiel. The message tells him that if Spider-Man survived Morlun attacks and he didn't, then he should know that there is another individual like him. Before the message reveals why Ezekiel kept this from Peter, he brokes the screen. Peter arrives at the room to free her, she warns him that Morlun will come if he does. Peter, knowing Morlun is gone, opens the room. Cindy then attacks Spider-Man until he reveals that Morlun is dead. After realizing she was free, she made an improvised costume of webs and told Spider-Man to call her Silk before going to her parents' home, however, she discovered they had moved. He promissed his help in finding them, she asked him when Morlun died, but after he told her he died twice, Cindy tells him that if Morlun come back once, he could return again. And attacked him for making all her sacrifice for nothing. She pulls him back with a webline and asks him if he can feel it that they are all in danger. Spider-Man realizes his Spider-Sense is out of control, screaming like it never has before. Silk then pulls up his mask and they kiss.[97]

Heading back to Peter's apartment, the two began to have sex, during which Cindy revealed she knew Peter's secret identity. He was skeptical about what might follow now that Cindy was free and thought it might be a mistake to let her out but she says that the damage is done and she doesn't want to return, eager to see the world she missed. They continue their business on the ceiling, until Anna Maria comes in. Cindy almost attacks her understandably, but after learning the truth, calms down. Anna Maria says that Sajani has gone missing (having been kidnapped by the Black Cat), and that Peter needs to fill in for her at an interview for the Fact Channel News about Parker Industries' idea of a supervillain prison, which he reluctantly accepts. After having a talk with Jameson, who had joined the Fact Channel, Peter, accompanied by Cindy, does the interview, which is interrupted by Electro and the Black Cat. They demanded Spider-Man to appear in 15 minutes or Peter will die. However, Silk arrives to confront them, giving Peter time to change into Spider-Man and join the battle. Peter tries to convince Felicia to stop, but still fails. Felicia uses her luck powers to deviate Electro's bolts, knocking Spider-Man down. Black Cat prepares to pull off his mask, prompting Jonah to aim the camera into him and announce that is time to reveal the face behind the mask of Spider-Man. [100]
