Quote1 How about this... my name is Fury, kid... and so is yours. Quote2
ā€”Nick Fury, Sr. to Nick Fury, Jr.[src]

History

The son of CIA agents Nia Jones and Nick Fury, Marcus Johnson spent most of his life unaware of his parentage or his mother's true past. When a fling with Nia resulted in her pregnancy, Fury feared that both her and their unborn child could become targets of his enemies. Nia reluctantly agreed to leave her life behind, moving to Atlanta, Georgia. Taking the surname Johnson and adopting the identity of a social studies teacher, Nia gave birth to a baby and called him Marcus.[8]

Growing up without contact or awareness of his true father, whom he believed was dead, Marcus lived a normal life.[10] In high school, Marcus was a skilled football player. Instead of taking a scholarship, he enlisted in the Army when he was 18 years old. He served in Iraq for a tour, went back to the states to study philosophy at the University of Georgia, and reenlisted afterward. By the time Marcus was 30 years old, he was serving as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan alongside his best friend, Phil "Cheese" Coulson.[9] In addition of the identity of his father, Marcus was also unaware that he had inherited from Fury the Infinity Formula. The body-enhancing serum was ingrained in Marcus' DNA and his blood generated the formula on its own.

Shortly before the War of the Serpent, the Spymaster unearthed the secret of Fury's child and gave the information to would-be word conqueror Orion, one of Fury's biggest enemies. In a bid to save his body from a fast-paced decay, Orion targeted Marcus for the Infinity Formula in his blood. When the War of the Serpent sparked with worldwide panic-induced riots, Orion used them as cover to have Nia murdered while Marcus was deployed in Afghanistan to draw him out.[8] After surviving the bedlam caused in the battlefield by the Serpent's global influence, Marcus was informed of his mother's death and returned to Atlanta to attend her funeral. He quickly realized her murder hadn't been unpremeditated after finding special Russian shell casings at the scene of the crime in her house. Johnson was immediately targeted by the mercenary Taskmaster after Orion had put a price on his head, but Marcus was saved by the intervention of Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D., who had learned of Marcus' secret when it was leaked.[6]

Johnson was taken to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters to be placed in a witness program, but he decided to escape after realizing he was being withheld information. Marcus sought Coulson's help,[9] and the two located one of Taskmaster's safe houses in New York. Although interrupted by the appearance of both Deadpool and the Serpent Society to claim the bounty on his head,[10] Marcus managed to escape with an injured Taskmaster. After learning of Orion from Taskmaster, Nick Fury appeared in his identity of Scorpio and beat Marcus up in an attempt to get him into hiding.[4] Assuming that Scorpio was Orion, Marcus followed him to his hideout. Once exposed, Fury revealed the truth to Marcus. Shortly afterward, Leviathan agents captured both Fury and Johnson and brought them to Orion. In order to taunt Fury, Orion had Marcus' left eye cut out. Before Orion could harvest the Infinity Formula from him, Marcus made his escape, leaving him to transfuse the last remains of the serum in Fury's body into himself instead as a temporary measure to regain his vigor. As Marcus made his way back to Orion, Coulson arrived with the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. as reinforcements. Marcus avenged his mother by killing Orion with an explosive. In the aftermath, Marcus came to terms with his father's reason for abandoning him and Nia. Encouraged by Fury himself, Marcus decided to embrace his father's lifestyle, becoming a spy and an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. alongside Coulson. Marcus also learned that his legal name was Nick Fury Jr., and adopted it as well.[8] Fury quickly rose to the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D., and became an agent for the organization's own Secret Avengers team together with Coulson.[11] When Daisy Johnson was ousted as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Maria Hill took her place, Fury became her right-hand man.[3]

In the middle of the second superhuman civil war, Fury Jr. was sent in a mission to neutralize a Hydra cell posing as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. According to a prediction from the Inhuman profiler Ulysses Cain, the success of the cell's attack on S.H.I.E.L.D. could prove to be fatal. On his way to a base in Arizona, Fury was attacked by fellow soldiers, who turned out to be actual agents loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. instead of Hydra infiltrators as suspected. In order to find the source of the traitors, who claimed that Fury had to die to ensure S.H.I.E.L.D.'s survival, Nick decided to fake his death and slip under the radar.[12] Fury interrogated dirty S.H.I.E.L.D. benefactor Elton Blake and was directed to an abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. base named Ulu in Alaska.[5] Once there, Fury tried to corner the mastermind, but he was caught off guard by his speed, resulting in the villain making a escape.[13] Fury subsequently infiltrated base Ogma and downloaded vast amounts of classified data to track down the mastermind, evading Black Widow in the process.[14]

His investigation led Fury to the Kratos underground base, where the Leader was revealed to be a rogue Life-Model Decoy of his father. The LMD revealed that Ulysses' prediction didn't involve a Hydra cell, but that Nick Fury's next mission was going to cost him his life, but not taking part on it would've resulted in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s destruction. The Leader had learned of the prediction and wanted to take Fury Jr. out of the picture to push forward his plan to take over S.H.I.E.L.D. and reinvent it. In order to stop the Leader and his plans, Fury destroyed the main support beam of the base, causing it to give in, even at the risk of his own life.[15] Fury survived the collapse and retrieved the head of the destroyed LMD to hack into it and learn how did it pull off his plan. Nick forgave Maria Hill for having sent him on a mission that involved his potential death, acknowledging it was her responsibility as director to ensure S.H.I.E.L.D.'s survival, but didn't brush off that he wasn't told about it. Because of this, Fury decided to postpone his return to S.H.I.E.L.D.[16] When he returned to the organization, Fury found himself on a top secret mission infiltrating the French Riviera, a high end casino. There he faced off in a deadly game of cat and mouse against Hydra agent Frankie Noble.[1]

Following the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury broke off on his own and continued helping protect the world from threats from the shadows.[17] When he became aware of the resurgence of the Infinity Stones,[18] Fury unwittingly got in the way of Nighthawk's own plan to gather them all.[19] Nighthawk captured Fury and brainwashed him to turn him to his side and join his mission to restore the universe to its version in which the Squadron Supreme where the world's champions.[20] Fury helped Nighthawk steal a Cosmic Cube shard to power a scanner to find the Infinity Stones, and Nighthawk offered him the mantle of the Falcon, who was his sidekick in the alternate reality.[21] A fail-safe eventually triggered inside Fury's brain, and his brain rebooted itself. Pretending to still be under Nighthawk's sway, Fury accompanied him as the Falcon to capture the host of the Reality Stone, Star. After she was taken down, Nick attacked Nighthawk,[2] which drove him away. Realizing that the Infinity Stones were an imminent threat, Fury placed Star in stasis and intended to do the same with the hosts of the remaining gems.[22]

Fury was called to investigate the recently deceased father of a family in a farm in Iowa. The wife and her two children were convinced that the dead man was actually a Skrull imposter, despite his body remaining in his human form. Fury figured that it was just a way to cope and didn't have the heart to tell the family that the father wasn't taken by the Skrulls and was in fact dead. Promising the family that he would simply continue the investigation, Fury accepted the invitation to stay for a while in their home, but looking through some of their family photos noticed that the mother and children looked exactly like one of the photos. From this, Fury deduced that the entire family had been replaced by the Skrulls, and attempted to fight back, but unfortunately the Skrull impostors moved fast and knocked him out. Several Skrulls then proceeded to steal his appearance to infiltrate some secured facilities as part of their new Secret Invasion. Maria Hill was able to discover that the Nick Fury who came to meet her in her office was a Skrull, and proceeded to have the C.I.A. detain the other Fury impostors. However, this was all part of the Skrulls' plan to divert their attention to the most notable individuals, allowing the Skrulls to instead replace unknown government officials.[23]

The real Fury was taken to a secret Skrull base in Nebraska where he was tortured just out of spite. Eventually, he was joined by Hill herself who had also been captured, and after she was beaten as well the Skrulls revealed that they had successfully infiltrated several American nuclear facilities which they would use to kill humanity and allow the Skrulls to claim Earth. In that moment, Hill laughed, confusing Fury until he realized that wasn't Hill but another Skrull. She revealed herself to be T'idd and had used Stark's Iron Eye to send all of the information she just learned to the real Hill and the rest of the Avengers and the government, leading to all of the Skrulls infiltrators being captured. Fury and T'idd were then rescued by the Avengers and the hostile Skrulls all arrested. Recuperating, Fury went to meet Hill in her office to congratulate her on her job, but she expressed disappointment in herself for believing all of the Skrulls were the same and ignoring that some of them were capable of sympathy. Fury told her to not treat herself too harshly, since their kind of jobs were difficult and frustrating. After bidding Hill goodbye, Fury contacted Stark, asking him if his Skrull employees could assist him in his next mission.[24]

  • The main reason for the creation of this character was the increasing popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Nick Fury, based on the Ultimate version of Nick Fury, the main difference with the original Nick Fury being the ethnicity.
    • Due to this, Tom Brevoort, Marvel's Vice President, believed it to be a prudent move by Marvel due to the African-American Nick Fury that appears in films, animated shows, and other licensed adaptations.[25]
  • Decades before this character's introduction, Marvel Comics drafted in 1981 the idea for a comic series called Fury Force which starred Nick Fury's son and namesake. Most of the elements of this series transitioned into the licensed property comic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.[26]
