Muir Island was a small island off of the northern coast of Scotland. Muir Island's significance stems from the fact that it was the home of Earth's largest and most comprehensive mutant research complex, the Mutant Research Center, founded by Dr. Moira MacTaggert.[1]

MacTaggert chose the spot partly because of its isolation: Muir Island was located just to the north of Cape Wrath, 500 miles south of the Arctic Circle.[2] It was a remote place, a few hours' journey by launch from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis,[3] or one hour by hovercraft, in a trip that crosses The Minch, then went north past Cape Wrath towards the Skerries.[4]

History

Originally, Dr. Moira MacTaggert created the facility to help her son, Kevin (aka Proteus), an extremely powerful and destructive mutant.[citation needed]

Muir Island's facility holds a wealth of knowledge on various mutants, their abilities, and other mutant-related issues and concerns (such as the Legacy Virus). It was also once the home base of the Excalibur team.[citation needed]

Mutant research facility partially sponsored by Professor X, held mutant criminals as needed.[citation needed]

The island and its research center have come under attack by many villains, including Magneto, the Acolytes, the Shadow King, Galactus, and Proteus. The island's facilities were later destroyed.[5] Although rebuilt, the Muir Island Genetic Research Center was destroyed again in an attack by Mystique and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.[citation needed]
