As a genius-level genetic engineer of Irish and Mexican descent, Miguel worked unhappily for Alchemax, who controlled the city. Under pressure to imprint genetics into humans, he accidentally killed a test subject and while submitting his resignation, was drugged by his boss, Tyler Stone. In an attempt to free himself from being a slave to the company that had caused his drug addiction, Miguel tried the process that had killed the previous subject on himself. While it was sabotauged in an attempt to kill him, it actually granted him several powers. He donned a dia de los muertos costume (since it could hide his new claws), and became known as Spider-Man.
