History

Max Bovar was a Gestapo agent for the Nazis during World War II. As a child, he grew up with Hans Dreden. Dreden eventually immigrated to the United States with his parents and grew up to be a chemist working for the Mars Powder Company, a company that developed new forms of gunpowder for the United States military following the outbreak of World War II.

A high ranking Gestapo agent by that time, Max Bovar was sent to the United States in 1944 in order to force Dreden to provide the formula for his newest invention, Mars-X Powder. Bovar left a note telling Hans that he would meet him that night, unaware that his suspicious lurking around the neighborhood attracted the attention of the hero known as the Angel in the process.

Breaking into Hans's home, he demanded the scientist to provide the formula. When Hans refused to betray his adopted country, Max ordered his men to grab Hans's wife Elsa and threatened to brand her with a swastika if he did not comply. Hans conceded and prepared to write out the formula when the Angle crashed in through the window. As the hero battled with Max's minions, Max himself attempted to flee the scene.

The Angel tried to stop him, but Max broke free and tossed a grenade at the hero. Thinking the Angel was killed in the explosion, Max attempted to hail a cab to escape. The Angel however managed to survive and resuming his struggle with Max, pushed the Gestapo agent into the path of the speeding cab. Max was fatally struck down by the cab, ending his threat to the Dredens.[1]
