Lord Maur-Kon is a member of the Myndai, a corrupt and technologically-advanced race of humanoid aliens. He was also the last leader of the Myndai Followers of Darkness who had sought to control Earth.

History

Approximately 175,000 years ago,[1] a group of Myndai calling themselves the Followers of Darkness came to Earth and conquered the planet. Some members of the alien Lumina race felt that this act had tipped a balance and they decided to challenge Earth's conquerors. Calling themselves the Followers of the Light, these Lumina travelled to Earth where they fought the Followers of Darkness in the Great Chaos Wars that allegedly lasted for eons.[2]

At some point during the war, Maur-Kon was born on Earth and eventually became the leader of the Followers of Darkness. It was during his time as their leader that the Followers of Darkness were defeated in the final battle of the Chaos Wars that was fought in Maur-Kon's underground base (known as the "Haunt of Evil") located beneath a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean that was just off the coast of what is now Japan. Under circumstances that have never been revealed, Maur-Kon and his Dark Agents somehow ended up sealed in a state of suspended animation. With the immediate threat ended, most of the Lumina left Earth but a few Followers of the Light remained to act as sentinels against the possible revival of their enemies. Those Followers of the Light built a fortress stronghold (later known as the Shogun Sanctuary) relatively nearby, in a secluded mountain range on what is now the Japanese island of Honshu. To compensate for their diminished forces, these Followers of the Light used their advanced technology to create the three Shogun Warrior robots.[2]

In recent years, a volcanic eruption broke the spell of long sleep, awakening Maur-Kon and his forces who immediately resumed their attempt to conquer Earth. Maur-Kon used his sorcery to draw upon the hot blood of the Earth itself to create the elemental monster Rok-Korr which he then sent on a rampage that brought it to the outskirts of the city of Tokyo. The Followers of the Light reacted by summoning their three chosen Agents of the Light who together piloted the Shogun Warrior Raydeen in battle against Rok-Korr and managed to drive him out of the city.[3]

Realizing that the giant robot was proof that the Followers of the Light were waiting to renew their ancient struggle, Maur-Kon sent Rok-Korr on a mission of destruction in order to draw out the giant robot so that they could locate its stronghold and destroy their enemies forever. Surprised when Raydeen was joined by two other giant robots, Combatra and Dangard Ace, Maur-Kon cast a spell that multiplied Rok-Korr into his three elements, splitting him into earth, fire and water elementals.[4] As he monitored the battle from afar, Maur-Kon wondered aloud if the reign of sorcery might have ended during their long sleep and perhaps the Followers of Darkness should use science instead. His second-in-command, Lieutenant Magar, disagreed, insisting that they must remain true to the old ways of sorcery but Maur-Kon reminded him that science could also serve evil. By the time the three Shogun Warriors had destroyed all three Rok-Korr elementals, Maur-Kon was with his Techno-Mages, examining their new mechanical Servant of Evil, the Mech-Monster.[5]

It was about this time that Maur-Kon secretly contacted the criminal human geneticist Doctor Demonicus, freed him from prison and supplied him with advanced Myndai technology and equipment, including a giant space station.[6]

As the Mech-Monster neared completion, Lord Maur-Kon again rejected Magar's pleas to stop using science and attended a demonstration of the new construct's capabilities. Magar's subsequent attempt to use magic to destroy the construct was interrupted by some of Maur-Kon's Drones, causing the Mech-Monster to instead be instilled with sorcerous life while rendering it uncontrollable.[7] Upon learning of Magar's actions, Maur-Kon was enraged but before he could punish the traitor he was informed that one of the giant robots had been detected flying on a course towards the island. Stating that this was no time for fighting among themselves, Maur-Kon left Magar in command of the Drones and the island's defenses. When Combatra's head module detached from its body in order to enter a tunnel leading to the Haunt of Evil, it flew into an ambush and was shot down. The pilot, Genji Odahsu, was thrown clear in the crash, and Maur-Kon was delighted that they had captured both her and her Shogun Warrior.[8] Maur-Kon was able to swiftly learn some basic moves and, when the other two Shogun Warriors arrived, he was able to pilot Combatra well enough to hold them off. However, while Maur-Kon was occupied, Magar's attempt to sacrifice Odashu in order to create a new Servant of Evil went wrong and sorcerous magma released by the failure of the sacrifice was unleashed and began flooding the Haunt of Evil. Within Combatra, Maur-Kon was enjoying himself immensely until he noticed that his island had begun to crumble and collapse. Spottng one of his war-machines exiting the tunnel, Maur-Kon suspected that it was Magar attempting to escape but it was actually Genji who used a blast from the vehicle's weapon to separate Combatra's head from its body. After the head module was blasted across the sky several more times, Maur-Kon had had enough and bailed out, swearing that he would return and make Magar and the Followers of the Light pay![9]

Maur-Kon then used an ancient communications link to transmit a Charter summons that members of the Charter Federation would be required to answer. Knowing that his "group" had been banished by the Charter long before, Maur-Kon concealed his identity by using technology to create a remote-controlled avatar in the form of a member of the non-humanoid alien race known as the Primal Ones. When a starship crewed by members of a mechanoid Charter race responded to his false Primal One's call for aid, Maur-Kon was able to cast an energy-spell that enslaved them to his will.[6] Forced to act as Maur-Kon's Drones, the mechanoids created robots (possibly out of themselves) that looked like adult male humans wearing black clothing and used them to begin observing Richard Carson,[10] the Agent of the Light who had piloted Raydeen during its encounter with Cerberus, one of the creations of Doctor Demonicus.

Ultimately, these "Men in Black" were able to capture all three Agents of the Light and steal the keyhole pendant communicators given to them by the Followers of the Light. While the Men in Black held the Agents captive, Maur-Kon used the pendants to locate Shogun Sanctuary and then sent a giant alien monster that attacked only seconds after Richard Carson managed to send a warning to the Followers of the Light. Taken by surprise, the Followers were unable to defend themselves and the monster demolished the Sanctuary, killing three of them and mortally injuring the fourth who died soon after the Agents arrived in their Shogun Warriors. Communicating as a disembodied telepathic voice that hid his identity, Maur-Kon presented himself as an alien entity who had been sent to Earth to limit human technology so that the human race would not be able to travel to the stars and potentially threaten other worlds. The Agents refused to abandon the Shogun Warriors and fought back, destroying the alien monster in battle.[11]

Three weeks later, the false Primal One used the starship of the mechanoids to attack Dangard Ace off the coast of Madagascar. During the battle, he sent the giant robot Megatron against Dangard Ace who was soon joined by Raydeen. However, as Megatron seemed to be on the verge of defeating the two Shogun Warriors, Maur-Kon changed his plan and retracted his command to destroy. Megatron was distracted by the change in orders and fell victim to a simple strategy employed by the two Shogun Warriors that destroyed it.[12]

Immediately afterwards, Maur-Kon used his Primal One to call for direct aid from the Charter Federation in the form of its most powerful vessel, the starcruiser Nightwind. When the starship arrived, the Primal One met with its commander, Captain Cymell, and demanded the use of its internal symbiote, the planet-destroyed known as Gigantauron. Cymell reluctantly complied and the Primal One took control of Gigantauron. After determining that the three Agents of the Light had travelled to one of its other targets, the Baxter Building where Reed Richards kept his advanced technology, Gigantauron landed in the bay south of New York City and issued an ultimatum. However, the Fantastic Four and Combatra fought back and managed to disable Gigantauron, forcing the Primal One to flee.[13]

After returning to the Nightwind, the Primal One demanded more weapons from Captain Cymell but she was disinclined to comply and instead ordered the retrieval of Gigantauron. Cymell then told the Primal One that she had determined that the threat posed by Earth was marginal at best and that she and her crew would not help him any longer. However, while Cymell was on the Primal One's starship, Combatra was detected approaching in an apparent attack. Disillusioned, Cymell allowed the Primal One to take command of her ship's defenses but he and the forces he commanded were unable to prevent Combatra and the Fantastic Four from reaching the Primal One who ordered his Drones to attack and kill them all. As the battle began, the Invisible Girl discovered the room from which Maur-Kon was controlling his Primal One, called out to her comrades to reveal the truth and cut the power, causing the false Primal One to fade away to nothingness. Once the false Primal One was gone, the mechanoids were freed from Maur-Kon's energy-spell, ceased all hostilities and revealed how Maur-Kon had tricked, trapped and enslaved them. When confronted by Carson, Maur-Kon admitted that he had been behind Doctor Demonicus and was then taken into custody by Cymell's crew to be dealt with by the Charter.[6]

Notes

  • Maur-Kon and the other Followers of Darkness were identified as being aliens in their first appearance in Shogun Warriors #1 but the name of their race was not revealed to be the Myndai until the entry for the Followers of the Light that appeared in the Appendix in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #4.
  • Although the enemies of the Followers of the Light were most often referred to as "Maur-Kon and his Dark Agents," the Outline-Glossary presented in Shogun Warriors #3 established that the actual name of their group was the Followers of Darkness.
  • It was revealed in Shogun Warriors #20 that "Maur-Kon's group" had been banished by the Charter long ago. It was not made clear if the entire Myndai race was banished or if it was just his group.
  • The story in Shogun Warriors #20 revealed on its last two pages that Maur-Kon had been secretly allied with Doctor Demonicus and was controlling the "Alien Force" who had succeeded in killing the Followers of the Light. Although this was probably the most plausible way to tie up the loose ends from the series, the pieces don't fit together perfecly.
    • For one thing, since Carson's encounter with Cerberus in issue #7 took place no more than a few days after Maur-Kon's defeat in issue #6, that means that Maur-Kon must have somehow contacted Doctor Demonicus before the Mech-Monster storyline in issues #4-6. Given that the Followers of the Light were presumably on the lookout for any activity on his part, it seems unlikely that Maur-Kon could have supplied any resources (including the giant space station) to Demonicus without them detecting it.
    • For another thing, the flashback showing how Maur-Kon enslaved the mechanoid aliens after his defeat in issue #6 depicts him summoning them to what appears to be his volcanic island base. This is problematic because that volcanic island base was totally destroyed in that same issue by the magical magma unleashed by Magar. Maybe he actually had bases on two similar-looking volcanic islands?
    • For some reason, both Maur-Kon and the leader of the mechanoids state that Maur-Kon was believed to have died after his defeat in issue #6. This is odd because that issue clearly shows that both the Agents of the Light and the Followers of the Light are well aware of the fact that Maur-Kon had escaped.
