Krakoa; "The Island That Walks Like a Man"[1] is a sentient living island located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It was once believed that it was spawned from nuclear testing in the area (that somehow the repeated bombardments of radiation caused the island to mutate into a living ecosystem).[1] It eventually was revealed to have been part of an older sentient landmass known as Okkara which in ancient times was split apart using the Twilight Sword. Splitting it in two formed Krakoa and Arakko.[5] Although hostile at first, the land eventually became a safe haven and later home nation for mutants on Earth.[6]

History

Origin[]

Krakoa was believed to have been a very small island in the Pacific Ocean that was located close to where some nuclear bombing tests were done. It was thought that the radiation somehow turned the island's ecosystem into a single hive-mind entity.[1]

Okkara (Earth-616) Arakko (Earth-616) and Krakoa (Earth-616) from Powers of X Vol 1 4

Krakoa was part of a greater land called Okkara, but it was attacked by an enemy wielding the Twilight Sword, causing a horde of Daemons to spill forth unto Okkara, and splitting it into two beings; Krakoa and Arakko. Apocalypse and his First Horsemen fought a bloody war against the daemons. When it became clear that they could not win, Apocalypse sealed the breach, with Genesis, the First Horsemen and the other mutants of Okkara remaining on Arakko, which became trapped in the dimension of Amenth.[5]

Krakoa, having been part of the whole that was once Okkara, and with Okkara being an essential part of the Celestial-designed mechanism called the Machine, Krakoa is protected by the Eternal Principles.[7]

The mutant Cypher discovered that in the year 1865, a ship underway to Australia, was wrecked. One of its inhabitants, a mutant named Silas Ellerby, was the only survivor. He mourned the loss of his wife Lucy and their unborn child. Silas used his geokinetic powers to build himself a huge mansion, which caused Krakoa immense pain. Krakoa tried to make a peace offering in an attempt to stop Silas by granting him food, but Silas would not. Instead, Krakoa ressurected Lucy's corpse and pusuhed Silas out of a window of his mansion, effectively killing Silas and ending Krakoa's pain. [8]

World War II[]

In 1945, during World War II; Nick Fury along with Howling Commandos accidentally witnessed an explosion on Krakoa. Soon after that they crashed on the island where they came across the island's collective intelligence. In order to leave the place Fury managed to arrange a peaceful parting in exchange for keeping its existence a secret.[9]

X-Men Tragedies[]

Original X-Men[]

The X-Men (then consisting of Cyclops, Angel, Havok, Iceman, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), and Polaris) came to the island after Cerebro detected an unknown mutant there, and were captured by Krakoa, who used them as food sources.[1]

Moira's X-Men[]

Another team of young mutants, composed of Petra, Darwin, Sway, and the third Summers brother Kid Vulcan, from a parallel X-Mansion led by Moira MacTaggart, were sent to help the original X-Men. They managed to save Cyclops and returned him to Professor X. However, Krakoa killed Petra and Sway and left Darwin and Kid Vulcan almost dead. Xavier erased all records of the real events and his brother from Cyclops' mind, and altered the other mutants' minds to cast the illusion of a speaking, sentient Krakoa.[10]

Third Team[]

With the failure of the first team Professor X then decided to recruit international mutants to save his X-Men, namely Colossus, Nightcrawler, Storm, Sunfire, Thunderbird, Banshee, and Wolverine, and sent them to Krakoa. Cyclops' group of mutants paired off and after each pair encounter and defeated various aspects of the island, the new X-Men team found the original X-Men, who were weakened from being fed upon by Krakoa for so long. At this point, it was revealed that the island was itself the mutant they had originally detected and Krakoa battled the new and old X-Men by forming a giant humanoid body out of its terrain. With a combination of psi interference by Professor X and energy blasts from Cyclops and Havok, Storm was able to supercharge Polaris' magnetic powers with bolts of lightning. Polaris interacted with the Earth's core and created a magnetic pulse so strong that she was able to launch Krakoa into outer space. The X-Men—then counting thirteen members—were saved.[1] As Krakoa left Earth’s atmosphere, the portion of the island containing Darwin and Vulcan broke free and remained in Earth’s orbit.[2]

Krakoa was captured by the enigmatic alien, the Stranger, and was imprisoned in the Stranger's Laboratory World for the alien to study him. He remained there until freed by Overmind.[11]

Legacy[]

As it left Earth’s orbit, Krakoa also released spores, some of which grew to sentience becoming Krakoa’s “children.”[2]

A portion of Krakoa's biomass was used for construction of the Bio-Sphere at the Massachusetts Academy, nicknamed the "Danger Grotto" by Generation X.[12][13]

A "son of Krakoa", the result of a spore that was released from Krakoa as it was shot into space, later appeared. Nightcrawler eventually defeated this "Vega-Superior" by tricking him into drowning himself.[14]

The Young X-Men encountered another "Krakoa" when 56 construction workers disappeared from a construction site on a tropical island.[15]

Rebirth[]

Krakoa (Earth-616) from Powers of X Vol 1 4

Through unknown means, Krakoa eventually returned to the Pacific Ocean after being freed from the Stranger.[2]

After apparently abandoning his dream for peaceful coexistence, Professor X ultimately repurposed Krakoa into a sovereign nation state for mutants. Now donning a portable Cerebro, Xavier seemingly recruited and experimented on Krakoa with the help of Cypher and Warlock. Together they expanded Krakoa's consciousness and cultivated its biome to include exotic flowers used for various purposes, as such becoming the primary economic resource of the mutant nation.

These Flowers of Krakoa could grow Habitats, self-sufficient offshoots of Krakoa that served as embassies around the solar system, while remaining connected to its hive mind via Gateways, which provided ways to instantly travel from one part of Krakoa to another. Cypher and Warlock gave Xavier a special flower to create Moira's No-Space, a place secret from the rest of Krakoa where Moira MacTaggert could live and she, Xavier and Magneto could scheme in private without anyone being able to track them. What Cypher didn't tell them was that Warlock had merged with Krakoa's biome and could now hear everything on the island, even things Krakoa itself couldn't hear.

Additionally, Xavier bought world leading pharmaceutical companies with his vast wealth to produce three new super drugs from Krakoan flowers, developed from secret experiments by Beast using dead bodies, and offering them to every country that formally recognized Krakoa as a nation. These drugs — dubbed I, L, and M — operate as a adaptive antibiotic, extend the human lifespan by five years, and prevent human "diseases of the mind" respectively, allegedly hereby solving many devastating health problems in humans.[6][16]

Krakoa (Earth-616) from Wolverine Vol 7 6 001

An island known as Arak Coral later appeared off the southern coast of Krakoa. With Cypher offworld, Cable and Prestige accompanied their father in exploring the new landmass and learned about it from the High Summoner of Arakko before the two islands merged.[17]

After the Krakoan mutants defeated the Swordbearers of Arakko, Krakoa was finally able to reunite with Arakko. As it turned out, both Krakoa and Arakko had evolved beyond what they originally were together, with personalities radically different from what they once knew. Both now completely different, even needing Doug to translate for the both of them, they had no interest in reunification.[18]

Fall of X[]

Nimrod, who allied himself with the Astral Technarchy, used Warlock's connection to Krakoa to infiltrate into the system of the island, taking over Krakoa and manufacturing organic Sentinels and absorbing the minds of mutants connected to the Astral Plane.[19] The Legionaries were forced to kill Warlock to sever Nimrod's corruption of the island, saving mutantkind from destruction for now.[20]

Tensions arose when Colossus forced the Council to reveal the Sins of Sinister to the entire world, causing internal turmoil within the Council and the nation while the mutant population became more hated than ever. Cypher confronted Xavier and demanded for the Council to be disbanded to which the latter agreed. Feeling threatened and having lost its trust in the Council, Krakoa got hold of Cypher and hid him within itself in order to protect him from the danger that would soon come.[21]

During the celebration of the Hellfire Gala, Orchis suddenly attacked, targeting the Omega-level mutants while the Stark Sentinels killed the rest of the mutants. The X-Men attempted to fight back, but Orchis revealed that it had poisoned Krakoa's drugs and could easily kill every human who ingested them, threatening to kill as many humans for any mutant living on Earth. Left with no choice, Xavier took control of all mutants and forced them to leave the island through the gateways, though a small group resisted him and fled to New York. Sadly, Orchis had also sabotaged the gateways, causing the mutants who had passed through to completely disappear and end up in the White Hot Room. With the massacre over, Orchis planned to hunt down the remaining mutants around the world, leaving a devastated Xavier the last living inhabitant of Krakoa.[22]

The ownership of the island fell on Sebastian Shaw's hands, having betrayed mutantkind and joined Orchis. As all of his finances were taken away by the rest of the Hellfire Club,[23] Shaw sought to claim the entire island to profit off. He sent some Orchis agents to conquer Krakoa, but Xavier was determined to protect the island at all costs.[24] Soon Shaw himself arrived, and with the help of Selene they fought Xavier, but during the battle he convinced Shaw to leave the island alone for now by secretly granting him the passwords to access the Hellfire Club's money. With the deal settled, Krakoa was temporarily safe, though Selene was allowed to claim the External Gate.[25]

Powers

Krakoa possesses an instinct-based hivemind composed of the lifeforms that formed it.[citation needed] It can create moving, semi-humanoid and animal forms of various sizes out of its component earth.[citation needed] Its largest humanoid form possessed superhuman strength (lifting approximately 100 tons).[citation needed] It feeds on mutant energy, and drains that energy quickly, often rendering mutants powerless, and though it often traps beings using tentacle-like vegetation growth, it can feed off this energy as long as the being remains on the island.[citation needed] Krakoa can block the powers of telepaths trying to communicate with those on the island,[citation needed] and it can survive unaided in space.[citation needed] There is also a great amount of magic around Krakoa, according to Doctor Strange.[199]

Weaknesses

Magnetic pulses supercharged with bolts of lightning;[citation needed] winter[citation needed]

Notes

Krakoa prefers to be identified as "they" as confirmed by Cypher. [200]

Trivia

  • The 2006 X-Men: Deadly Genesis storyline features a major retcon in which it is revealed that many of the elements in Giant-Size X-Men #1 were in fact deceptions and delusions created by Professor X to hide the major part of the story. Relevant to Krakoa:
    • The creature was apparently non-verbal and instances where it appeared to speak were telepathically faked by Xavier. This was later contradicted in Journey into Mystery: The Birth of Krakoa #1, in which the island communicates with Nick Fury.
    • Krakoa also did not deliberately free Cyclops to seek out further mutants for it -- Cyclops escaped due to the intervention of Xavier's second team, which was edited out of Scott's memory.[201]
    • Although not Xavier's doing, Deadly Genesis showed that a part of Krakoa was left orbiting around Earth for years until the energy wave from M-Day and the Collective awakened Vulcan. However, the rest of Krakoa was previously captured for study by the cosmic entity known as The Stranger, as seen when Quasar visited one of his 'laboratory worlds' in Quasar #15.
  • Certain non-mutant allies; such as Broo, Deadpool (before getting citizenship) and Scarlet Witch[202] are allowed to visit Krakoa whenever they please. Broo was later confirmed to be an actual citizen, since he is a mutant but of the Brood race.[2]
