After the launch of his son's expedition to Mars ended in disaster, a distraught J. Jonah Jameson decided to adopt Peter Parker, who had lost his Aunt May in the same accident. Lavishing attention on the young man, Jameson paid for Peter to attend Phillips Academy, the best school in the state, and made him assistant editor of his new weekly newspaper, the Reveille. However, the presence of Spider-Man's webbing at the site of the rocket crash caused Jameson to blame the superhero, leading him to fund the development of the Spider-Slayer robot and the Scorpion suit as well as putting a $1,000,000 bounty on Spider-Man's head. Following Spider-Man's sabotage of the Slayer, Jameson pushed for the Scorpion, only to have Flash Thompson take the formula in a misguided attempt to protect Spidey, which resulted in his going berserk and sacking the lab. Peter angrily revealed his identity to Jameson, leaving him horrified at the thought that his blind pursuit of revenge had turned Thompson into a monster and driven a wedge between him and his adopted son. When a group of supervillains attacked Peter to get the bounty, Jameson pressed Spencer Smythe into reactivating the Spider-Slayer, which he piloted remotely to save Peter from the villains. After this incident, Jameson and Peter became a superhero team, operating out of the Daily Bugle's top floors. J. J. had his eye on opening "Jameson and Son, Heroes for Hire", a coast-to-coast superhero franchise, though Peter attempted to talk him out of it.
