In 1951, Dr. Clive had developed a radiation treatment, that he offered to use on his employee, Dell Frye, in an attempt to cure Frye's blood disease. However, Clive's treatment resulted in Frye being transformed into a green giant. He was able to cure Frye, using a serum. However, Clive was later confronted by angry villagers and died. Clive's machinery was kept in working condition for the next 30 years, by Frye, until the arrival of Dr. David Banner.[1]
