History

New Excalibur battles an evil counterpart of Jean Grey, who is a member of the Shadow-X, the X-Men of an reality in which Professor X was possessed by the Shadow King and became a mass murderer. They are brought to Earth-616 as a result of M-Day. In New Excalibur 24# she was stabbed with a broadsword by a Captain Britain from a alternate demension - after beating him, she used her power to gain knowledge necessary to deactivate the device Albion had used to nullify London's supply of electricity. The energy required to perform this as well as blood loss caused by her stab wound killed her. This version of Jean Grey appeared to have a connection to the Phoenix Force as well, due to her astral form being composed of fire and her speech being occasionally shown in fire-red speech balloons (the same happens to Rachel Summers when tapping into the Phoenix Force's powers); however, this was never explained or otherwise explicitly mentioned and is only speculation.
