History

James Rhodes had been a test pilot, S.H.I.E.L.D. officer, and confidante to Tony Stark since piloting Stark out of the Southeast Asian jungle years ago. After briefly substituting for Tony in the role of Iron Man, Rhodes became his own armored superhero, War Machine. He tried to act as liaison between the difficult Stark and the equally prickly top brass of the US military.

He was one of the many heroes who joined S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Alliance against villains after a mysterious Pulse hit the Earth and left a material called Isotope-8, desired by both heroes and villains.[1]

Extremis[]

Rhodes debuted a new armor during A.I.M.'s newest terrorist attack. He helped to defeat A.I.M.'s Exoskeletal Battletank and later accompanied Iron Man in a seach-and-destroy mission to track down A.I.M.'s first Extremis test subject Eric Savin.

His armor was was hijacked by Savin after A.I.M. launched a cyber attack on the Stark Tower. The suit was remotelly controlled to fight Pepper Potts, who was debuting her superheroic career as Rescue, and was finally shut down when Iron Man re-keyed the command codes.

During his search-and-destroy mission along Iron Man, War Machine recovered material on Extremis for Mr. Fantastic, Beast and Giant-Man to investigate.[1]
