Built from a fortune made in copper ore, the Howlett Estate was said to be built on a foundation of tears and was believed to be bad luck by the servants who lived there.

At the end of his life, Logan returned to the estate to find it mostly standing, but in rubbles. At his older brother's grave on the property, he found a book recently placed there, "Ghosts of Japan--the Lost Rituals of Kanaguri", leading him to travel to Kanaguri.
