Currently, six individuals have held the name Hobgoblin at one time or another in the main Marvel universe. Roderick Kingsley, the original Hobgoblin and a former fashion designer, is the longest running and possibly best-known Hobgoblin, retiring from and re-claiming the mantle numerous times. Arnold Donovan was a small-time thug working for Kingsley who was exposed to the Goblin Formula, and had a very short, and fatal, tenure as the second Hobgoblin. Daily Bugle reporter Edward Leeds was then brainwashed by Kingsley to act as the third Hobgoblin. Upon Leeds death, Jason Macendale, Jr., who started his criminal career as the original Jack O'Lantern, took on the Hobgoblin name. Macendale would eventually be killed by Kingsley so that the latter could once again become the Hobgoblin.

During The Secret War, an unnamed man in a new Hobgoblin costume attacked Steven Rogers, but failed to defeat him, and was captured. Kingsley eventually resurfaced with his original costume; however, he was soon slaughtered by Phillip Urich, who currently operates as The Hobgoblin.
