HistoryEdit

Frank Portl was a famous sculptor during the 1940s who operated out of New York City. By 1942 he was also working for the government drawing up defense designs. For reasons of his own he began selling these designs to foreign powers, often hiding them within sculptures that he would sell to said clients.

He would take on a secretary named Betty Rooge, who would stumble upon this truth, and when one of Portl's regular clients Prince Von Scholsstein came to purchase one of the sculptures -- unaware that it had plans hidden inside it -- she would refuse to sell it to him. They would get into an altercation leading to Von Scholsstein's check being ripped in half and Von Scholsstein leaveing in anger. When Betty confronted Portl with her findings he drowned her in his bathtub, leaving the portion of the check hoping to implicate Von Scholsstein and his butler in her death.

With a party happening that evening, Portl placed a was sculpture of himself and leave it in his study while he hid himself on the property. The first party guests to arrive would be the Human Torch and Toro who learned of the fake statue when Toro accidentally melted it with his flame powers. Searching the loft for Portl, they then discovered Rooge's dead body. This led to the police being called in to question the rest of the party guests. Toro was sent to fetch the butler while the police grilled Von Scholsstein who seemed to the the most likely suspect. After Toro sent the butler ahead to the police officer he would come across some of the incomplete sculptures containing secret plans.

Portl caught the boy and clubbed him over the head and sculpted a statue over him, however the Torch found Toro and freed him. Portl hid himself within a wax statue of his own making but was found by the Torch and Toro who then brought him to the police for questioning. Portl put up a false front when told that Rooge was dead, however the Torch soon deduced that Portl was really the one responsible for the murder and the selling of defense plans and had him arrested. His fate following his arrest is unrecorded.

Portl was a skilled sculptor who specialized in the use of wax to make life-like statues.
