Synopsis for "The Drum Beats Midnight!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Jann of the Jungle #17
(originally printed as Voodoo Vengeance!)

Jann comes across a scavenger named Carson who is just about to plunder an elephant graveyard. She subdues him and sends him away, but Carson vows to get revenge against Jann. Jann's attention is immediately drawn to the concerns of the jungle, forgetting about her encounter with Carson. However, Carson has not forgotten about her and has gotten an appointment with Akra, a reclusive native that is a master of voodoo. He offers to give the old man medicine in exchange of a voodoo doll of Jann to get revenge against her. Akra completes the doll and Carson then takes it and leaves without giving medicine. Akra tells his guard to let Carson go, explaining that the doll will not work against someone who is good.

Carson begins using the voodoo doll to immobilize Jann leaving her immobile in the middle of the jungle. However the magic wears off just moments before a lion pounces, allowing Jann to move out of the way. Feeling a mystical pull, Jann follows it to Carson's hut where she finds the voodoo doll choking Carson. After she saves Carson's life he gives up on scavenging, revenge and voodoo and vows to leave Africa for good.
