History
As the "Age of Apocalypse" reality was being eliminated from existence, Blink fell through a portal and escaped. She awoke in a strange place outside of time, greeted by what seemed to be a female Nightcrawler, and with no home to return to. The two were soon joined by alternate reality versions of Thunderbird, Mimic, and Morph along with the son of Rogue and Magneto. A being calling himself the Timebroker explained they were to become The Exiles; sent from one timeline to the next on missions to repair mistakes that would otherwise derail or destroy those realms (a la Quantum Leap). During each mission the team receives instructions via a Tallus worn by the Exile's leader. Many missions have proved deadly, with the team roster frequently changing.
Thanks to the manipulations of former Weapon X (another reality-hopping team meant to deal with "the dirty work") leader, Hyperion, the Exiles learned the true nature of their quest. It turns out that within the M'Kraan Crystal (the nexus of all reality) is a crystal "palace" with monitoring equipment and machinery to travel to various universes. This palace was discovered by a group of reality hopping insectoids, who in their attempt to understand the machinery caused the accident for which the Exiles are attempting to fix. Creating the Timebroker and collecting heroes for other realities to fix the mess that they made.
However, they underestimated the furiousity of the power mad Hyperion, who broke free from his imprisonment and took over the "crystal palace" and made an attempt to get revenge on the Exiles. The group traveled through the M'Kraan Crystal with the help of the Tallus and battled Hyperion there, and eventually defeated the super-man. Since then the Exiles have taken up shop in the palace and have been attempting to send everyone back home.
While returning Beak to his home reality (Earth-616, the prime Marvel Universe) they found that the reality had be changed to a world where super-humans ruled and were treated as celebrities. During a battle against Proteus, the homicidal mutant used his reality warping powers to travel to other universes in the body of Exile member Mimic. After jumping to many different realities, Proteus possessed the body of Exiles teammate Morph. The Exiles eventually defeated him, using a B-Mod machine from the reality of the Squadron Supreme to make all portions of his personality dormant except those of their former teammate Morph.
The Exiles are currently continuing their mission to correct various realities, while keeping a close eye on their teammate Morph in order to prevent Proteus from ever menacing the multiverse again.
Most of the Exiles were X-Men or at least members of mutant teams, in their home reality. When a member of the team dies in battle, or is severely injured they are replaced with a new team member. The deceased or incapacitated would be put in stasis inside the "crystal palace" located inside the M'Kraan Crystal. When the Exiles took control of the palace they began a quest to heal their injured comrades and send them home, or find a final resting place for the slain. However, recent incidents have diverted the group away from accomplishing this task.
Members have included (all from differing realities unless noted):
- Magnus (son of Rogue & Magneto) - Deceased, died on the Exiles first mission disarming a nuclear bomb that was set to blow up a prison full of mutants, replaced by Sunfire. He came from Earth-27.
- Blink (teleporter from Age of Apocalypse) - Team leader, at one point was sent "home", however she was sent to a reality where her old teammate & mentor Sabretooth was living in and helped him train young mutants to defeat the Sentinels that ruled that reality. During her absence she was replaced by Magik. She later was returned to the team following the death of Sunfire. Blink's home Earth is Earth-295
- Mimic (can copy the powers of five mutants, each at half-strength) - Deceased, after a long run with the Exiles, including a brief time as the teams leader, Mimic's body was possessed by the mass-murdering Proteus who used Mimic's body as a host to travel to different realities. Mimic's body finally burned out while battling the hero Justice in the "New Universe", Proteus took the body of Justice, leaving Mimic's dried husk behind. It was put to rest on his home world on Earth-12
- Morph (shape-shifter) - Long running member, still active. Currently Morph's body is possessed by Proteus, however due to the use of a redesigned B-Mod machine from the Squadron Supreme's reality, Proteus' mind has been shut down except for the assimilated portions of Morph's mind.
- Nocturne (TJ Wagner) (daughter of Nightcrawler and Scarlet Witch) - Member of the original team, following a battle against the Fantastic Four & Namor on Earth-616, Nocturne was left behind in that reality and her place was taken by the X-Man named Beak. Nocturne is presently a member of the new Excalibur of Earth-616.
- Thunderbird (horseman of Apocalypse) - Severely crippled battling Galactus on a world where the Skrulls invaded Earth. Thunderbird was replaced by Sasquatch (Heather Hudson), his body was last seen in stasis inside the Crystal Palace, his fate yet to be decided.
- Sasquatch (Dr. Heather Hudson) - Replaced Thunderbird as the groups powerhouse. On a world ruled by the evil magician Kulan Gath, Heather's mystical side, the beast known as Tanaraq, began taking control over her body. In the next world they traveled to, the Exiles (with the help of the Shaman) defeated Tanaraq and separated Heather from it's being. As a result Heather became powerless. Hyperion (who was secretly in control the the Crystal Palace at the time) removed Heather from the team and replaced her with Sabretooth. After Hyperion's defeat, Heather has been freed from stasis and acts as "mission control" to the Exiles, feeding them information during their missions. Sasquatch originated from Earth-3470.
- Sunfire (flight and fire powers) - Replaced Magnus after his death. During her missions, she fell in love with the Spider-Woman in a reality where creatures known as Vi-Lock's have taken over much of the world. Sunfire returned to that reality twice. She was killed in battle, smothered by falling debris from a falling building in a battle against the Thing. She was replaced by Blink who returned to the team. Following the battle against Hyperion inside the "Crystal Palace" Sunfire's body was laid to rest on the Vi-Lock world.
- Magik (teleporting sword-wielder and sorceress) - Replaced Blink following the success on the Vi-Lock world. She never got along well with the rest of the team, and approached each mission ruthlessly. When the Timebroker decided to liquidate both the Exiles and Weapon X, making only one team, Magik attempted to bargain with Hyperion. Hyperion broke her neck for her troubles. She was finally laid to rest in her home reality on Earth-4210.
- Namora (queen of Atlantis) - Following the liquidation of Weapon X, Namora was added to the group of Exiles. She is an alternate reality version of Namor of Earth-616, although she is female and has blue skin. Another, like Magik, who had a ruthless approach to each mission. During the battle against Hyperion inside the "Crystal Palace", Namora was killed by Hyperion, taking a blast of his atomic vision. She was laid to rest in Atlantis of her home reality on Earth-2189.
- Beak (chicken-type mutant with weak flying ability, from the 616 Earth) - Was selected to be a member of the Exiles to replace Nocturne. Although the team never understood why Beak was chosen as his powers were more a hindrance than a help on their missions. However, Beak managed to survive mission after mission. When Hyperion took over the "crystal palace", he removed Beak from the team and replaced him with Blink & Sabretooth's old nemesis: Holocaust. However, during the battle against Hyperion, Beak was freed, and he used the palace's devices to bring two other Hyperions from alternate worlds to help combat the evil one. After Hyperion's defeat, the Exiles agreed to bring Beak home, when they did so they found that the reality had been changed. After a battle against the evil mutant Proteus, the reality was restored to normal, Beak returned home to his wife Angel just as M-Day finished. Beak was de-powered upon his return to Earth-616.
- Sabretooth (Blink's mentor from Age of Apocalypse) - Former team leader of the Weapon X group, Sabretooth decided to stay on a world ruled by the Sentinels to teach the mutants there to fight off their oppressors. The Exiles eventually returned to this world, and Sabretooth was recruited into the group (by Hyperion, who was secretly running the "crystal palace"), although Sabretooth was given the Tallus, Sabretooth has given the role of leadership to Blink. Sabretooth comes from Earth-295.
- Holocaust (son of Apocalypse) - Another group added to the team by Hyperion. Holocaust is a long time foe of both Blink and Sabretooth. Holocaust wanted nothing to do with the Exiles, however assisted them in using the M'Kraan crystal to travel to the "crystal palace", there Holocaust was killed by Hyperion who (ironically) consumed Holocausts body. Holocaust originally came from Earth-295.
- Longshot - While trying to find a way to stop Proteus in the "New Universe", Heather Hudson made a deal with the other-dimensional media mogul Mojo to use Longshot. Part of the payment for his inclusion in the team was to give Mojo access to television feeds of every reality imaginable. Longshot is currently a member of the Exiles. Longshot doesn't originate from a particular Earth, but Mojoverse, which according to it's ruler Mojo is one of a kind.
- Spider-Man 2099 - After the death of Mimic, the Exiles visited a world that was chronologically in the year 2099. There they met and were joined by the Spider-Man of that era. After his identity was exposed during the battle, Spider-Man asked to join the Exiles and is still currently an active member. Spider-Man 2099 comes from Earth-6375, a reality that diverged from Earth-928 after the events caused by Proteus.
- Power Princess (Earth-712) - On a detour to the Earth of the Squadron Supreme, the condition of the Exiles' departure and continued mission to stop Proteus was on to allow Power Princess to join their ranks. After the defeat of Proteus, she decided to return to her home reality. She originates from Earth-712.
- Psylocke (longstanding member of the canon X-Men team from Earth-616) - Recruited by Heather Hudson for her ability to be unaffected by Proteus' reality altering powers.
For a short period of time, the Exiles were opposed by a rival group of reality-hopping agents called "Weapon X", which Sabretooth (Earth-295) was originally a member of.
The Exiles were briefly replaced by an army of alternate-reality Wolverines. However, the originals returned to help defeat Brother Mutant. These alternate Wolverines included (among many):
- Days of Future Past James Howlett - A Wolverine from a reality where the mutant hunting Sentinels rule America. Wolverine was a member of a resistance movement. He was killed in battle against Brother Mutant. He is similar to the Wolverine of Earth-811, although it is never specified if his is from this reality.
- Zombie Wolverine - From a reality where all super beings have been transformed into flesh eating zombies. He resembles the zombie Wolverine of Earth-2149, although it is not specified which Earth he comes from.
- Patch - A Wolverine who for a time operated under the alias "Patch" while in the city of Madripor and took on wearing an eye patch. He originates from Earth-181.
- Weapon X - A Wolverine who has just been implanted with adamantiun by the Weapon X Project and remains in feral state.
- Albert & Elsie Dee - Albert is a cyborg facsimile created by the cyborg Reavers and was once used in a plot to destroy Wolverine. He is partnered with Elsie Dee, an android in the shape of a young girl. They hail from Earth-5211
- James Howlett - Who is Wolverine from a point in his history where he just recently developed his mutant abilities. James was taken from Earth-1880.
Current Exiles roster
Whenever one of the Exiles dies, is sent home, or something happens to them, they are replaced by someone else, and thus the roster changes. The first occurrence was when Magnus died in Exiles 2, and Sunfire came on board to replace him. The current Exiles roster is:
- Clarice Ferguson (Earth-295)
- Kevin Sydney (Earth-1081)
- Victor Creed (Earth-295)
- Longshot (Mojoverse)
- Miguel O'Hara (Earth-6375)
- Elizabeth Braddock (Earth-616)
Founding Members
- Blink (Age of Apocalypse/Earth-295), Clarice Ferguson, Exiles 1, Team leader and Tallus holder; she is from the Age of Apocalypse and was "sent" home once in Exiles 22 but was actually sent to the Earth that Sabretooth was marooned on; returned to the team after the death of Sunfire.
- Nocturne (Professor W's X-Men), Talia Josephine "TJ" Wagner, Exiles 1, Became pregnant by Thunderbird but had a miscarriage; ended being swapped for Beak and is currently on Earth-616 as a member of New Excalibur; from a reality where she is the daughter of the Scarlet Witch and Nightcrawler.
- Morph (Earth-1081), Kevin Sydney, Exiles 1, Only long-standing member; was offered to be sent home once but declined, saying he needs the team and cannot abandon them or the Earths in peril. Currently the host body of Proteus, however Proteus's mind has been rendered dormant thanks the use of a B-Mod machine from the Squadron Supreme's Earth.
- Thunderbird, John Proudstar, Exiles 1, From a reality where he was made into War of the Horsemen of Apocalypse; ended up brain-dead in Exiles 10; was replaced by Sasquatch. He still remains in the Stasis Gallery due to the fact that he is neither dead or healthy and alive.
- Mimic (Earth-12), Calvin Montgomery Rankin, Exiles 1, Former Tallus holder; led the team when Blink was sent home; accidentally killed Sunfire when he was implanted with a Queen Brood egg after a mission detour; possessed by Proteus of House of M; died after Proteus sucked the life out of him. Sent home for burial in Exiles 83.
- Magnus (Earth-27), Magnus Lehnsherr, Exiles 1, From a reality where he is the son of Rogue (Earth-27) and Magneto; died in Exiles 2 sacrificing himself to contain a nuclear explosion in a reality where Magneto was good and Xavier was evil; replaced by Sunfire. He was sent home in Exiles 83 with a note explaining his story, until then he was believed by his parents to have run away.
- Note: During their fist mission the Exiles were observed by one of the many alternate reality versions of the cosmic entity known as the Grandmaster. Their mission ruined a wager for a game that he was playing and so he plotted revenge against the team. Eventually this reality's Grandmaster gathered alternate reality versions of all the original Exiles and in a wager with the Grandmaster of Earth-33629 pitted both the alternate reality version of the original team with the teams current roster of the time. The Grandmaster's revenge plot was exposed and the two Exile teams foiled this plan. The alternate version of the original Exiles team currently act as defenders of Earth-33629
Replacements
- Sunfire, Mariko Yashida, Exiles 2, Replaced Magnus after he sacrificed himself; revealed to be gay; died from a collapsing building when Mimic went on a rampage while being possessed by a Queen Brood egg in Exiles 37; ashes taken back to Legacy World where she had a relationship with Mary-Jane Watson during a mission detour in Exiles 34. She was sent to the Legacy Reality for burial in Exiles 66.
- Sasquatch, Heather McDaniel Hudson, Exiles 10, Replaced Thunderbird after he became brain-dead. was possessed by Tanaraq when she was gravely injured in Exiles 57. Tanaraq is purged from her body in Exiles 58 leaving her powerless. Is replaced by Sabretooth. Currently serves as the teams communications base in the Panoptichron.
- Magik (Earth-4210), Illyana Nikolievna Rasputin, Exiles 22, Replaced Blink; was killed by Hyperion in Exiles 44; isn't replaced by anyone since the Timebroker is trying to downsize both the Exiles and Weapon X teams. Sent home for burial in Exiles 83.
- Namora (Earth-2189), Namora McKenzie, Exiles 46, Alternate female version of Namor; killed by Hyperion in Exiles 64. Sent home for burial in Exiles 83.
- Beak (Earth-616), Barnell Bohusk, Exiles 48, Traded places with Nocturne; replaced by Holocaust; returned home in Exiles 71; currently depowered as a result of Decimation.
- Tanaraq, Tanaraq, Exiles 57, Gains dominance over the body of Sasquatch; is purged from Heather's system in Exiles 58.
- Holocaust (Earth-295 aka AoA), Exiles 61, Also from the same reality as Sabretooth and Blink; replaced Beak; killed by Hyperion in Exiles 62. Not sent home for burial because Hyperion absorbed his energy-based body.
- Longshot (Mojoverse), Longshot, Exiles 74, A part of a bargain Heather Hudson made with Mojo which allowed the semi-brain dead Longshot to join the team in exchange for Mojo to have the ability to view more dimensions in the Multiverse then he had access to and receive video feed of the Exiles to turn into a "reality show".
- Spider-Man 2099 (Earth-6375), Miguel O'Hara, Exiles 76, From the 2099 approximation. Joined when Proteus, in the body of Hulk 2099, publicly unmasked him.
- Power Princess (Earth-712), Zarda, Exiles 78, From Squadron Supreme. Joined in Hyperion's place to help the Exiles catch Proteus and a Squadron appointed liaison to watch the Exiles and make sure they're fighting for good, as they say. She leaves the team in Exiles 91 stating that she has duties to fulfill back home, however she makes it clear that she will be there if the need arises.
- Proteus (Earth-58163), Kevin MacTaggert, Exiles 69, From the visit to House of M, Proteus has been the first enemy the Exiles had to hunt through realities and their second antagonist. He possessed Morph and was brainwashed by Blink (with help from a device from the Squadron Supreme) into thinking he was Morph, the real one.
- Psylocke (Earth-616), Elisabeth "Betsy" Braddock, Exiles 81, After Power Princess left the Exiles with an open spot on their roster, Heather Hudson believed it would be best to find someone who would be able to help them stand up to Proteus should the need arise. Thanks to her brother Jamie Braddock's recent "reweaving" of her quantum strings, Psylocke was the perfect match as Proteus would not be able to use his reality altering powers on her in any way.
