Esme was the first to split from her sisters, falling in love with Shi'ar-soldier-in-disguise. After leaving her sisters and joining Xorn's Brotherhood of Mutants, she began a relationship with Xorn. After this relationship failed, she returned to her sisters until she attempted to murder Emma Frost. She failed due to being discovered by Sage and Bishop, so she fled the X-Mansion. It was revealed at the same time that Esme had killed Sophie, in order to be the strongest of the Cuckoos and seize control. She used the mutant drug Kick and manipulated Sophie into overextending her telepathy to the point of death.

Esme returned[1], revealing that she had been working for Xorn (who had revealed himself as Magneto, though this would apparently turn out to be another lie) the entire time, and that she had developed a crush on him. However, after he rejected her affections, Esme turned on Xorn and attempted to destroy his mind.[2] Xorn killed her for this, and she died in Emma Frost's arms, being told by Emma (her unknown mother), "You are the one I am the most proud of."
