History

Millennia ago, the Deviants carved deep caverns beneath the Andes Mountains of South America (under modern-day Bolivia)[1] and created a powerful cobalt flame energy source that powered the civilization. [2]

By the 16th century, the Deviants had abandoned their subterranean civilization under the Andes Mountains, but it was found by a tribe of Inca people fleeing Spanish conquistadors such as Francisco Pizarro who were conquering and colonizing their civilization. [2] Carrying vast amounts of gold with them, the Incas settled in the hidden, subterranean region and constructed a new civilization of their own where they continued to worship their gods and construct buildings using gold.[2][3] At the mouth of a cavern that opened up into a large sweeping valley, they discovered the cobalt flame energy source left behind by the Deviants and used it to provide power and energy for their civilization, calling it the "Sacred Flame of Life."[2]

In modern times, scientist Dr. Franz Anton located el Dorado while researching the artificial growth of body cells in South America. He was kidnapped by forces loyal to the "Keeper of the Flame," the el Doradian charged with tending to the Sacred Flame of Life. Anton's former student and colleague Dr. Hank Pym soon ventured to el Dorado in search of his missing friend and was befriended by forces loyal to Prince Rey, the latest in the lineage of el Dorado's monarchs, who was embroiled in a political power struggle with the Keeper of the Flame.[4] Although both the Keeper of the Flame and Prince Rey sought control of the Sacred Flame of Life, Pym realized that they would threaten the entire planet if they ever tapped into the Flame's true potential, so he summoned his fellow Avengers to el Dorado to destroy the Flame.[5]

Later, Tyrannus, a former Roman emperor who dwelled in the underground civilization of Subterranea, ventured to el Dorado under the alias of "Des" and brokered peace between the Keeper of the Flame and Prince Rey.[6] Helping them to rekindle their Sacred Flame of Life,[2] Tyrannus formed a triumvirate alongside the Keeper of the Flame and Prince Rey known as "They Who Wield Power" and began to aid villains such as Absorbing Man,[7] the City Stealers,[8] Earth-Shaker,[9] the Lava Men,[10] Moses Magnum,[11] the Orb,[12] and Stegron[13] in an attempt to disrupt the Earth's tectonic plates, which they believed would increase the Sacred Flame of Life's power. Goldbug, one of the criminals hired by They Who Wield Power, led the Hulk to el Dorado, hoping to claim the city's golden riches for himself.[14] They Who Wield Power attempted to drain the Hulk's power into the Sacred Flame of Life, but Tyrannus revealed his true identity and turned against the Keeper of the Flame and Prince Rey, feeding them to the fire.[6] Temporarily gaining cosmic power by unleashing the true potential of the Sacred Flame of Life and allowing himself to be absorbed into it, Tyrannus soon lost control of his power and dissipated into space when the Hulk destroyed the Flame's generators. With el Dorado decimated by Tyrannus' assault, the surviving El Doradians ventured into Subterranea in search of a new home.[15]

Notes

Although Wolverine seemed to equate the legendary city of El Dorado with the Lost City of Z,[16] the Lost City of Z appears to be a separate hidden civilization located deep within the forests of Brazil's State of Mato Grosso.[16]
