HistoryEdit

Origin

David was always the smart one, but when he was a teenager, the answers just started appearing in his head- so long as he was in the same room as the teacher. He started to figure out that he was a mutant, and that he now had the ability to know anything that the people nearby knew. Feeling this made him a cheater, and knowing the knowledge would fade, David was driven to study even harder. He took college-level courses while finishing high school. But he kept his mutation a secret, until the hate group Purity outed him to his parents and attempted to attack him. David was rescued by the librarian at his school, the former New Mutant Karma, and her former teammate Danielle Moonstar.[1]

New Mutants Training Squad

David was taken to the Xavier Instituete and placed on Dani's squad called The New Mutants Training Squad . His fellow teammates were Surge, Elixir, Wind Dancer, Wallflower and Wither (though later Wither switch spots with Icarus). Dani appointed David as team leader but declined so Wind Dancer took over. She turned out to have some limits, and in the end David and Wind Dancer became joint team leaders.[2]

Too Much Information Vision

To increase his abilities, David asked Emma Frost to remove the mental block, ignoring his faculty adviser Danielle Moonstar's warnings. Instead of removing the block, Emma and Dani subjected David to a startling vision of a possible future should David go through with the procedure (they did this without him knowing). The following was a brief synopsis of that dream:

Quickly surpassing all the teachers at the school (after all, he knew everything they did simply by passing by them). He left the school, telling Josh (aka Elixir) that he would use Josh's healing power to heal every disease known to mankind for free. A few years later, David gained the knowledge of Stephen Hawking, Tony Stark, Henry Kissinger, and many other prominent geniuses simply by passing near enough to them to gain their knowledge. He announced at a press conference that he had cures for AIDS, cancer and every other known disease. He planned to distribute this cure across the entire country in a matter of weeks. These cures came at a high price, however, as Josh died during the medical procedure that harvested the tissue needed for the cures from his body. David silently, and secretly, mourned his friend, but believed firmly that his unwilling sacrifice was just.

Eighteen years later, David had married former teammate Noriko Ashida (Surge), been elected President of the United States, eliminated poverty, unemployment, and discrimination against mutants, and had nearly created a worldwide government. The only major holdout was China, which he planned to bomb via teleportation. He had declared the Hellions (a rival group of the New Mutants) terrorist threats and blamed them for killing the X-Men (David had killed them by dispatching them to investigate a satellite, which he subsequently caused to explode). The Hellions and New Mutants (including Ashida) joined up when many of the dark secrets of David's rise to power came to light. The combined groups staged an assault on the White House, but David's security forces killed most of the heroes. In the end, Ashida confronted David in the Oval Office, then used her powers to destroy the White House and everyone remaining in it.

At this point, David awoke from the illusion and at the urging of Dani and Emma decided to keep the mental block in place, at least until he was mature enough to deal with his increased powers. Prodigy, however, seemed destined never to have his mental block removed. The dream had profound effects on how he viewed his friends and classmates and his relationships with them. For a long time, he pushed Nori away, afraid that the possible future he was shown could still cause her death, but he finally overcame these fears and the two were now dating.

Decimation

In the wake of the M-Day, David lost his powers. When he and Josh woke up, Josh asked him what was going on, and David replied that he didn't know anything. David soon revealed that he had built a "Danger Cave" that allowed his teammates to relive former missions of the X-Men so they could train after he left, but Cyclops decided that it would be safer for him to remain at the mansion since Rev. William Stryker was targeting depowered mutants as well. When Stryker attacked the mansion he was wounded by one of the Purifiers, who were stopped by the students, but seemed to be fine when he joined the New X-Men when they left to fight Nimrod. He proved useful to the team when he attacked the robot with the weapons brought by X-23. After returning to the mansion, he was invited to stay by Cyclops, which he gladly accepted.

Quest For Magik

After being told a story by Blindfold about Magik, the students (including David) were kidnapped by Belasco, and were taken to Limbo. David was questioned by Belasco of Magik's whereabouts, and he told her she was dead. This sent Belasco into a rage, and he tore out David's heart, seemingly killing him. His friends screamed, and David's corpse was thrown on the ground. Elixir however, revived David by creating a new heart for him. David then tended to the drained Elixir and realized that Belasco put special helmets over the heads of the Stepford Cuckoos and Ernst seeing as they were a threat to him. David then formed a plan and as Mercury and Dust continued to battle Belasco he had Elixir boost a heavily injured X-23's healing factor as David tended to the Three-In-One. X-23 used her claws to release them at David's instructions and the Cuckoos unleashed their telepathic wrath upon Belasco and discovered that Belasco had captured two other girls before Illyana Rasputin but when he lost Illyana like the others girls it cut deeply and David pierced it together and revealed that Belasco loved Illyana and wanted her innocent soul not for power or revenge but for love. The Cuckoos were forced out of Belasco's mind but luckily Belasco was killed by Pixie and Darkchild before he could pull Earth into Limbo.

After their return from Limbo, the New X-Men were debriefed and consulted by the senior Institute staff. Shortly thereafter, Surge passionately kissed Hellion in front of the other students as a means of driving David away from her and out of harm's way, in hopes of sparing them the pain of losing each other. He then ran to his room were he started to sulk. The Stepford Cuckoos came into his room and explained that he still had the gifts he once had. The mind apparently remembers everything, but the connection sometimes fails. The Cuckoos said that they could restore all the gifts he once "borrowed" from other people using his powers, but he would not learn anything new. David then told them to do it. In light of his new knowledge, he was made a junior teacher to the New X-Men, responsible for their training when the other X-Men were away.

When the Hulk attacked the school, Beast told David to protect the other students, instead of taking part in the fight against the Hulk.

Manifest Destiny

Prodigy moved to San Francisco when invited by the X-Men to join them in their new mutant haven. However, the fight wasn't over as the Skrulls arrived to invade the Earth.

Second Coming

When the Mutant Messiah returned to the present, Prodigy was seen assisting Dr. Nemesis and the X-Club on Utopia.[3]

Psychomimetic (formerly): Subconscious form of telepathy, which allowed him in proximity with another person, to scan and internalize the knowledge and skills of others, giving him the ability to duplicate any non-superhuman talent. He acquired mental and physical abilities, be it knowledge over a subject, a foreign language, or mastery of a fighting style. However, he was unable to retain that knowledge. When the person left the room, Prodigy no longer retained information. This power was always on. He was also able to predict attacks in order to avoid them.
