History

Origin[]

Like each of the Fear Lords, D'Spayre was a mystery, and his origin (or even his very existence) was known to few.[6][7] He was a Demon created 20,000 years ago by the Dweller-in-Darkness, using the fear originated from the Great Cataclysm that sunk Atlantis and Lemuria.[8] D'Spayre was one of the Lords of the Splinter Realms.[9]

Modern Age[]

D'Spayre was encountered at the Nexus of All Realities. He captured young sorceress Jennifer Kale and the spirit of her deceased teacher, Dakimh. He tied them both to an arcane tower on the Nexus, trying to use the evil mystic energies of the tower to corrupt his prisoners so that they would use their magic powers to serve D'Spayre. D'Spayre had killed Dakimh's mentor Zhered-Na centuries ago.[10]

However, Spider-Man and the Man-Thing fought D'Spayre. Although D'Spayre used his powers to overcome Spider-Man with fear, Spider-Man managed to knock out D'Spayre. Kale and Damikh were freed soon afterwards.[10]

Since then, D'Spayre has pursued more subtle plans. He decided he did not know enough about Earthlings, specially superhumans. He appeared to lonely victims using his powers to make them despair; one of these victims was Jock Forrester, father of Aleytys "Lee" Forrester, who would later be a partner of Cyclops and later of Magneto.[11]

D'Spayre urged his fellow Fear Lords to attack Earth in an attempt to gain power, but they were unsuccessful.[12]

Spite, his sister, sought to depose him by using the Juggernaut.[13]

D'Spayre was one of the Lords of the splinter Realms called by Magik to discuss the threat of the Archenemy.[14]

D'Spayre later met with the other Fear Lords to discuss the Serpent's attempted conquest of Earth[15] and the group was gathered again by Kid Loki to stop Nightmare from becoming the King of Fear by forging the Serpent's fear into a crown and usurping all the other Lords. To this end they were tricked into a stalemate where none could possess the crown without it being taken by another.[16] This seemingly lasted until Mephisto claimed the crown for himself and the Fear Lords bent to his will, feeding off the fear Mephisto gave them from the crown. It is presumed that when Kid Loki sacrificed himself the crown faded and the Fear Lords left Mephisto's service.[17]

When Bruce Banner wanted to take control his other persona, the Hulk, D'Spayre disguised himself as Doctor Strange and offered to help Banner using ancient magic that would allow him to control his subconscious. D'Spayre did this for some unrevealed party so they could take control of the Hulk. The real Doctor Strange eventually learned what D'Spayre did and forced the demon to undo his work.[18]

Strange let D'Spayre talk while he and Doc Sasquatch traveled to Bruce Banner's location, a planet filled with a population of gamma mutates. While the Titan Hulk rampaged on the planet, Strange fought D'Spayre. D'Spayre thought he had the advantage, but Strange easily defeated him by trapping in the same sphere he imprisoned the demon in earlier. Banner eventually took back control of his body from Titan. Strange kept D'Spayre trapped in the sphere so he could no longer cause trouble.[19]
