Synopsis for "The Brain!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Adventures into Terror #4

Following the end of World War II, brilliant Nazi scientist Dr. Otto von Schmittsder, now facing a war crimes trial, meets with his assistant Fritz. He tells Fritz that he has come up with more devastating weapons and wishes to have his mind preserved so that he can continue his work. He tells Fritz that he has discovered that the human brain continues to live 24 hours after death and that he has developed a device, an Electro Brain Magnet, to restore a human brain to life. He then orders Fritz to sever his head after he is executed and restore it with the Electro Brain Magnet within 24 hours.

Sure enough, when Von Schmittsder is brought to trial, he is found guilty and sentenced to hang. After the execution, Fritz digs up Von Schmittsder's body and severs the head, bringing it back to the lab within Von Schmittsder's lab. There the Electro Brain Magnet brings Otto back to life. Now calling himself the brain and endowed with telepathic powers and limited motion, the Brain orders Fritz to leave him in the castle until he can find a suitable host to take control of and use for his world domination plans.

Setting himself up on a pedestal, the Brain waits until his castle is visited by two American soldiers who are a day away from being sent back home to the United States. The Brain overhears that one of the soldiers, named Frank, is returning home to continue his career in science and deems Fred the ideal candidate to turn into his slave. The Brain uses his mental powers to put Fred under his control and orders him to go AWOL and return to his castle later. When Fred complies, the Brain then shows him where a secret cache of jewels are hidden in his castle so that he can purchase new equipment that was confiscated or destroyed by the Allies.

Soon Fred, now completely under the Brain's control, is seeking world domination and creating a bacterial bomb to use in order to amass followers. When the weapon is complete, Fred is then sent out to rent a plane and test it on unsuspecting victims. When Fred returns successful, the Brain then begins to plot getting a legion of followers when suddenly they are interrupted by the arrival of Fred's military buddy who had not given up the search for his friend. The Brain orders Fred to shoot his friend, however Fred cannot bring himself to kill someone he cares about and fights the Brain's influence. Unable to stop himself, Fred instead turns the gun on himself. Fatally shot, Fred tries to tell his friend what happened but dies before he can fully explain himself. Meanwhile, the Brain manages to slip away vowing to continue his plans for world domination.
