Synopsis for "The Sentinels Live!"

We begin watching Lorna Dane get ambushed by Sentinels, but then quickly cut back to Egypt where the X-Men recently defeated the Living Monolith.[1] There Alex Summers is having problems coming to grips with his mutant power. While he argues with the X-Men to leave him alone or he could destroy them, locals ride up on camels. Professor Abdol accuses Alex of destroying an ancient temple while the X-Men try to convince them Professor Abdol is the menace. The professor, being known to the locals, is believed, and the situation starts to escalate. Suddenly Alex loses control again, blasting the dirt, and a fight starts between the locals and the X-men. The X-Men defeat the locals, but Alex runs off in the confusion. Alex takes refuge in a cave where he is ambushed by a sentinel. The X-Men try calling home, but Lorna doesn't answer. The X-Men split up; Iceman and Beast to check on Lorna, the rest to look for Alex. Hank and Bobby get ambushed by police at the apartment, and take off. They catch a TV broadcast featuring Larry Trask, and become aware that the Sentinels live!

Synopsis for "The Female of the Species!"

Marvel Girl demonstrates the many and varied uses of her powers, including a demonstration of her least known but perhaps most important power of "being able to turn heads without really trying."

Notes

  • Professor Abdol was the Living Pharaoh (issues 54 and 55) and then the Living Monolith (56).
  • This issue is reprinted in many other comics and books, see references for more info.[2]

Trivia

  • Jean Grey doesn't get an origin like the other characters did, but she does get this issue to show off her powers in the supplemental story. (In Silver-Age continuity, Jean first meets the X-Men and Professor X in X-Men #1, and thus no origin is necessary - she already has one from the first issue!)
