Synopsis for "What is...the Power?"

The X-men, along with Alex Summers and their prisoner The Living Pharaoh fly up to an archaeological excavation while looking for a place to hand their captive over to the authorities. They get ambushed by the Pharaoh's henchmen who are inside the tomb. The henchmen effect a rescue of the Pharaoh, and make off with Alex as well. Jean Grey uses a portable Cerebro to track Alex, and Angel gives chase. Angel tracks them to yet another ancient tomb, where he listens to the Pharaoh reveal that he and Alex Summers' powers are linked. The Pharaoh locks Alex in a solar radiation proof box, whereby his power increases to the point that he becomes The Living Monolith just as the rest of the X-Men arrive. The X-Men fight the Living Monolith inconclusively, but he is suddenly struck down by Alex going nova and annihilating the box, stripping the Pharaoh / Monolith of all his power.

Prof X directs Angel to take it high into the air because "only freezing cold can now deactivate" it. Angel succeeds, and joins the X-men.

Notes

  • Iceman actually does look vaguely snowy in the Angel origin story - someone was actually paying attention to the first few X-Men issues. (Iceman didn't get his icy look until issue 8)
  • This issue is reprinted in many other comics and books, see references for more info.[1]
