Synopsis for "Holocaust!"

Kukulcán battles his way past Cyclops and his treacherous henchmen to the roof of the museum, and then conjures a sphere of 'solar force' and flies back to San Rico. Professor X mentally rouses the X-Men, and has Jean research Mayan legends. Professor X discovers the legend of Kukulcan and sends the X-Men to South America to stop his new incarnation. In San Rico, Kukulcán clears the jungle away from forgotten temples, and compels locals to come and work for him and live in his reborn Mayan civilization. The X-Men battle past large cats, alligators, and wary natives to reach San Rico. There they futilely battle Kukulcán, whom they cannot overcome. Struck by a brilliant idea, Bobby has the rest of the X-Men distract Kukulcán while he covers a large crystal atop a temple with ice, cutting off the solar source of Kukulcán's powers. Eventually, the X-Men run Kukulcán dry, but not before he starts an earthquake which swallows the amulet and the temple.

Notes

  • This issue is reprinted in many other comics and books, see references for more info.[1]

Trivia

  • The San Ricans speak Mayathan, which Stan Lee graciously states is an ancient Mayan language.
  • Cyclops refers to the humans as Homo sapientes. This seems to be a misspelling.
  • This is the first issue where someone actually states out-loud how Scott Summers has feelings for Jean Grey.

Flashback / Origin

  • Kukulcán's pendant of power is revealed to be cursed. Centuries ago misuses of the pendant caused upheaval and purportedly caused a volcanic eruption that rained lava down on the Mayans.
